The double stabbing that sent a West Ashley father and son to a hospital Sunday was launched by a rival family who included their 12-year-old in the violence, authorities said.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office announced seven arrests in the case Tuesday, contending multiple members of the family took part in the attack that wounded Dennis Preston Redick, 45, and John Redick, 18.
What triggered the afternoon melee has yet to be confirmed, but officials believe the entire family became involved in some way.
"They were active participants, yes," sheriff's Maj. John Clark said after he was asked if the family's 12-, 14- and 15-year-olds played roles.
The elder Redick remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon. His family said he was in serious condition.
Arrested early Tuesday were Patrick Scott Martin Sr., 38, father of the family; his wife, Irene Martin, 35; a son, Ricky Jay Martin, 17; and two juveniles.
Each is charged with two counts of second-degree lynching, a crime that for adults carries a prison term of up to 20 years. Bail was set at $200,000 for the adults, who were ordered to have no contact with the victims.
Another son, Patrick Scott Martin Jr., 19, was arrested separately Tuesday. In addition to a lynching charge, he is charged with two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill. Another adult, Shawn David Tyler, 18, was arrested with Martin and also charged with lynching.
The 12-year-old was not charged with a crime but was put in the custody of the Department of Social Services, Clark said. His exact role in the attack is unclear.
Authorities were still trying to piece together the chain of events but said the families knew each other and that the bad blood was obvious.
"It appears this was an ongoing dispute between the sons that just went too far," Clark said.
Initial police reports said the elder Redick was stabbed several times after he tried to step between his son and a group of people who came to their home on Old Parsonage Road.
Martin Jr. is thought to have used a knife or blade of some type, Clark said. No weapon has been recovered.
John Redick, a senior at West Ashley High School, gave his version of events Tuesday, saying the Martins drove to his house looking to settle a score. He said that when the pack "swarmed" his father, he had to jump a fence gate to help him.
"They stabbed us several times," he also said. An incident report says that the elder Redick had an 18-inch cut on his lower back.
One of the more shocking aspects of the crime, Clark said, was that adults were present and should have known better than to resort to violence.
Tuesday's bond hearing showed the bad blood hadn't settled. Ricky Martin, the 17-year-old, received an automatic 30-day contempt of court sentence from Magistrate Priscilla Baldwin when he swore and threatened John Redick during his video bond hearing from the county jail.

OMG! This sounds like the Hatfields and the McCoys. Some of the mug shots look like they're meth addicts. I can't imagine what could have happened that made this family go ballistic to the point of jumping and stabbing and trying to KILL the other family.
It will be interesting to so how the truth in this unfolds. Lock your doors and windows, people, if these people make bail.
I hope the father and son who were attacked are doing better.

Its about time some retarded white people get caught doing something stupid. And in West Ashley; you couldn't tell me that this wasn't going to be another embarrassing moment in black history. Yall said blacks kids need more parental involvement right? Who would have guessed this is what yall meant. Ha Ha. Unbelievable.On a serious note I hope that the dad is ok and gets better. Not really, Hatfields and McCoys were not the dumb hillbillies that American folk lore has made them out to be and certainly not a bunch of crack heads.
Both families were hard working pioneers and considered wealthy by the standards at the time. While the "feud" ran more than a decade and cost the lives of a dozen family members, vendetta murders were just as common in the lawless American West in the 1900's.
These ding dongs live in West Ashley where the police are only a phone call away. They have no excuse for self serving justice, except being stupid.

Well I can tell you years ago John's mom was getting section 8 assistance and the whole sha bang.They worked under the table banking way more money than I had at the time(I was young and po).They always had smoked weed and let their kid do whatever he wanted.They had him playing unattended with a BB gun at like the age of 6 or 7.He shot through my glass door.He also told me when he was very small(I was an outdoor cigarette smoker at the time)he ran over to me and said"You better watch out.I just saw a cop done drive by here.You gonna get in trouble!"I was baffled at first and quickly figured out that the only smoking he knew was "SMOKING"(weed)I was furious so I explained to him that cigarettes were terrible for your health and really gross-but NOT illegal!

TO ALL: please dont take my words out of context. Im not glad this incident happened, im just saying Im glad to know that there is retarded white people too. We too often hear about the blacks in our community doing something totally ignorant (ususally against one of our own) that it did amuse me that it was finally not one of us. Im just being honest and in no way is that racial or hateful. If the suspects were black the posts would have been a lot more racially insensitive toward blacks (welfare scumbags, ghetto trash, food stamp babies, etc..).Does everyone seem to forget about the comments that we make on a daily basis behind the cloak and dagger of their computer screen. I am being honest as I have in my own workplace. I talked to my white co-workers about this and they seem to find nothing racial in my post so whats the problem? Sometimes the truth hurts huh? Lets pray for these families and hope they dont repeat this cycle of violence that has too often plagued the black community (my community). WOW!!

My family used to live in TN when I was younger. My biggest disappointment there was when my sister and I woke up one morning and the ground was covered in snow and my parents said that we still had school. We were jumping around all happy because we thought it was like here and we would get a snow day, but alas, that was not so. The buses ran with their snow chains and the schools were open. That sucked!

I didn't see it personally but my mother just told me that John was on tv and threatened them.He said something to the effect of they're gonna pay.WTH?!I have had pity for this boy(John)since I first met him.He's the child I posted about previously who had consumed his parents stash,wore snow boots in July,was locked out of their apt on occasion,playing for hours alone outside,his parents smoked pot literally sitting beside him laughing how if he was handed the joint he'd know what to do....I can't help but wonder where his mom is now.Trust you me,she is a loud mouthed piece of white trash.Oh,and her kid can read.

CB: anything is possible. Just as Mediterraneans, Jews, Asians, Blacks and Whites are genetically predisposed to certainly illnesses, there may be some validity to your query.
I dislike going down that road because people start to associate psychological and sociological attributes solely by race. Just as your story about your friend indicates.
Culturally speaking in this area and other URBAN areas, Blacks and Hispanics are disproportionally failing to achieve the so called 'American Dream'. There seems to be a social disconnect in the lower socio-economic neighborhoods whereby subsequent generations are not exposed to the VERY REAL possibility of personal responsibility and success.
How can this be solved? Not quite sure, I have some ideas and have worked to develop them but in the meantime there is a growing problem in minority neighborhoods.
What I have a problem with people like Moonpie, RW, MOTS, Jane and a few others, both Black and White, is that stereotypes are latched onto and exploited.
If an extraterrestrial was to land on Earth and read the comments section of the Post & Courier and all he or she saw were the comments of the aforementioned posters, they would believe that entire races of individuals were inherently inferior, physically, emotionally and intellectually. That there are entire races, with VERY FEW exceptions (according to that happy group) that have no redeeming value to the human race.
That is why I tend to respond to them as I do, for their ignorance, pettiness and open bigotry (and on the rare occasion racism) GALLS me.
Black, White or Hispanic please STOP spouting your xenophobic ignorance or stupidity.

Confuzzled, we always go to Eastern TN, and we have seen some of those types up in the mountains. A real estate agent took my husband and myself up in the mountains to look at property. We saw those typically stereotyped individuals living in added on trailers and sitting on their front porches with shotguns. When my husband started humming the theme song to Deliverance the agent realized that we weren't impressed with that particular area.
Needless to say, we haven't found the right place yet.

Now if I had said that (young black man) then it would have been percieved as racist. I agree, then it would have been a little racially charged. I was surprised the DC snipers turned out to be black. I always think of snipers as being young to middle aged white men. It's like seeing a white guy catch a football and run for a touchdown in an NFL game. Not true, everyone skin produces Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Think about this, blacks can stay in the sun much longer than whites with any assistance from sunscreen!!!

First off I think the gang is called "crips" so that knocks you down on your first hand knowledge of gangs. From what I hear they are actually more native to the west coast. Secondly, MS13 gang violence is overblown. While I am sure they exist, people blow them up so big that you would think we all were wearing bullet proof vests to get our mail. Not true. Maybe I don't know because I don't hang out with criminals but generally most gang members are after other gang members and generally they have something to do with the drug trade. I stay away from all of that so maybe thats why I don't see it. That is probably why I have no "first hand knowledge" but I do know I don't dodge bullets and have never seen that happen in this area.
You have lived there your whole life but have only been SC for a year so let me give you some pointers from someone who spent her whole life in SC. Crime is EVERYWHERE and SC had a city right on the same list with Baltimore and DC so you may not have moved to the right place just yet if that is your mentality. I do know that growing up in the area I have seen some random craziness. I do feel safer where I live now then when I lived in the mountains of SW Virginia aka meth central. Oh and I am not generalizing about that area either. Once you've had a meth head knock on your door at 11 p.m. and have had police search an entire apt complex with dogs you know you've seen everything. Believe me that is just the beginning.

kontact-I understand what you are saying in your subsequent posts & your honesty is refreshing.
One of the things about conversing via these posts is the absence of tone, facial expression etc. which help w/ understanding intent behind a comment.
As I have said on this article & others..human nature infects all of us equally.
Culture &/or race, upbringing, education & some other variables certainly have some influence, but our main identity is "human being".
For me personally my main identity is as a child of God. I know many do not see themselves that way, but I do.
Secondary to that is everything else:
Gender, relationships(wife, daughter, mother, sister, etc.), race, age education, etc.

Ok,, I got the scoop on how this happened,
John Redick was riding in his Mercury. Mercury is a good car. That's the car he was driving that day. He has had a lot of cars. Different kinds. Lot's of different kinds of cars. Irene Martin was standing - this girl - on the side of the street where there was this chicken stand, wasn't the Colonel but it was a chicken stand nonetheless. He pulled the Mercury up right along side Irene and rolled down the window, see, by electric power. Irene martin had on a leather skirt and had a lot of hair on her arms. I like that a lot. That means a big bush. John like a big bush. Irene says, "Are you dating?" You know, so John said, "Sure". Irene gets in and her and John pull off to a remote location that was comfortable for both Irene and John. Irene says, "How much do you wanna spend?", John Martin said, "Whatever it will take to see that bush of yours because I know it's a big one". Irene says, "Twenty five dollars". That's not chicken feed to a like John working man so he produce the $25, Irene puts it in her shoe, pulls up her skirt and there before John lay this thin, crooked, uncircumcised penis.
You can imagine how bad John wanted his $25 back, huh?
It all when down hill from there when the rest of family went after that $25

tmh32- Are you SERIOUSLY trying to portray Montgomery County as "gangland"? If you had said you lived in PG County, Anacostia or someplace that didn't have a median household income of over $100K, you might have had the beginning of a case. But you clearly know nothing about gangs, other than what you caught on the news or heard about from the other members at the country club.
