Police say 17-year-old robbed Chick-Fil-A

Saturday, November 29, 2008

— Tom Hubbard, an assistant manager at a Chick-Fil-A in North Charleston, had just finished his shift Friday night and was counting money in the safe when he felt someone press a gun to his head.

“At first I thought it was another employee goofing around, but then I saw the gun and the ski mask.”

Hubbard, 18, handed over the money, and the thief fled.

“I was pretty shook up, but then I just focused on what to do.” He ran after the robber, watched him climb into a white Dodge Caravan, and then dialed 911.

North Charleston Police quickly spotted the van at nearby hotel parking lot and recovered a handgun. Officiers arrested Rodney D. Bailey, 17, on a charge of armed robbery. He was released Saturday on $70,000 bond from the Charleston County Detention Center.

“The police did an excellent job,” Hubbard said, adding that he had been an assistant manager at the restaurant at 4925 Center Point Drive for a few months. He said that he recognized the robber as an employee he had worked with a few months ago. “I remember him as a pretty good kid.”

Another youngster gone off on the wrong side of the tracks. Heck, he could have gotten $100 for the gun, no questions asked, on the 13th of next month.

My first thought is: how did he get in there? Where were the other employees? Was this staged-working together but then one decided to call it off?
