Friday, November 28, 2008

A two-car wreck on U.S. Highway 17A in the Francis Marion National Forest killed a worker who was on his way home, authorities said.

Another man was charged with driving under the influence.

Berkeley County Coroner Glenn Rhoad pronounced Julian Tanner dead at the scene of the Wednesday afternoon crash. Tanner, 54, had been on his way to Andrews, in Georgetown County, from his workplace at Santee Cooper in Moncks Corner. He was wearing a seat belt, but the car went off the road and sustained heavy damage during the crash.

The Highway Patrol said Tanner was about 8 miles from Moncks Corner, headed north, when the wreck occurred about 5:30 p.m. A driver coming from the opposite direction in a 1992 Ford Crown Victoria crossed the center line.

Troopers ticketed the other driver, 37-year-old Jeremy W. Schaffer of Bonneau, with felony driving under the influence involving a death, Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said. Schaffer was listed in fair condition at Medical University Hospital on Thursday.
