Sales associate Jessica Raymond and manager Josh Morgan (right) arrived at work early Friday morning at the Steve Madden store on King Street; they found the store's door lock had been vandalized with glue and they waited for locksmith Eric Anderson to open the store on what is traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the year. "It's my first black Friday working. It'll probably be my most memorable," said Ms. Raymond.
Vandals poured glue inside door locks on dozens of shops along King and Market streets, delaying the start of Black Friday bargain-hunting in the downtown corridor this morning. A Charleston police officer estimated more than 20 merchants were affected, including Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, Starbucks and Williams-Sonoma. A group of locksmiths were scrambling to open doors for patrons waiting outside. Though the merchants had to open stores later than planned, some said the delay likely wouldn't affect business because shoppers usually make their way to King Street later in the day on Black Friday.

Over 70 businesses on King St and the Market area and my residence were glued shut. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have lived on King St for 3 years and I have heard Mayor Riley refer to King St as the "gateway to the city". Some gateway. Graffiti on all the buildings, trash everywhere, the same homeless people in Marion Square asking for money or urinating on the streets, and now this. Can we please get some police presence daily on King St? Please. Maybe this will deter people from doing stupid things which effect all of us. There was a large police presence for the Turkey Day run.

well, robconcannon, this is liberalism at work. instead of making arrests, locking people up and sweeping up the human debris, this is what happens.
we've all gotten soft. it's time to crack some heads.

Yes, one has to wonder where the police were and why no one
saw anything? You mean to tell me that many businesses got
hit and no one saw something weird going on. Ok, so it was
probably done late in the evening, but still, someone had
to wonder. And in this day of digital internet cameras, one
would think there might be some footage somewhere. Not to
mention, the idiots who did it were probably jealous they
could not shop in these stores and thus decided to be oh so
bright and screw the already bad economy by not allowing
people to inject cash into it. Some real forward looking
people let me tell ya.

I heard the suspects are on numerous video cams. Just a matter of time until they are all hauled in for arrest and questioning. If I was part of this group of vandals I would get in front of this quick. I personally hope they prosecute all the parties to the fullest extent. Sad news is it looks like they are all kids and probally rich ones at that. Names will never hit the paper and they will all be hiding in mommy and daddies pockets and screaming "peer pressure made me do it!"

Jeeeezzzz let's see 200 or more dead in India vs. a bunch of locks gummed up in Charleston....... I think I'll have another cup of coffee and watch the shopping madness from a comfortable distance.

Bottom line is that it is vandalism.
It is another reason for the police to install video cameras in the city. It's time to use technology to our advantage to keep the city safe and pro-development.

I hope they catch the kids who did this and have enough evidence to make the charges stick! Meanwhile I'm going to be glued to my computer trying to unlock the mystery myself.
