Fire guts house on Rutledge Ave.

Friday, November 28, 2008

Fire gutted a 77-year-old Charleston man's home early Thursday morning.

Thomas Bennett said a smoke alarm awoke him. He fled from the house at 694 Rutledge Ave. and tried to re-enter to save some of his possessions, but the smoke intensified and blocked his path.

Firefighters arrived just after 1:30 a.m. and discovered fire in the attic, the basement and inside the walls. Heat, smoke and water ravaged the 73-year-old home.

A crew from First Response surveyed the damage before boarding up the home's windows, noting detailed carpentry like wainscoting, cornices, and tongue and groove walls once covered in plaster.

"This is turn of the century Charlestonian stuff and it's all ruined," said Tom Miller of First Response said. The fire's cause is under investigation.
