The Village Playhouse goes glam for gala

Staff Reports
Thursday, November 27, 2008

On Dec. 3, The Village Playhouse and Repertory Theatre celebrates its eighth year as the only professional theatre arts organization East of the Cooper when it presents "The Glamorous Life ... An Evening at the Tides" from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Tides condos at the foot of the Cooper River Bridge in Mount Pleasant. Tickets are $50 per person.

In keeping with the evening's theme of elegance, goods from Bob Ellis Shoes, Norma May, Beba Luxe, and Grady Ervin will be auctioned off along with spa packages, a hotel stay at Two Meeting Street Inn, weekend get-a-ways and more.

Featured items include a $3,000 diamond and sapphire necklace from Charleston's Croghan's Jewel Box and a $1,500 giclee print by famed American impressionist John Carroll Doyle.

Joe Clarke will provide entertainment. Wine and food will be provided by Water's Edge Restaurant, Bacco, Red Drum Gastropub, and Neil Jordan's Steakhouse among other local favorites.

According to Keely Enright, artistic director and founder of the Village Playhouse with husband Dave Reinwald, the Mount Pleasant based theatre produces more than 100 nights of theatre per year, but only a fraction of its operating costs are derived from box office sales. It is dependent on community support to continue to grow and thrive. This season's productions include two Pulitzer Prize winning dramas and three South Carolina premieres.

Upcoming shows include the Tony award-winning "Doubt," the Johnny Cash musical "Ring of Fire," and the David Ives adaptation of the French farce "A Flea in Her Ear."
