History: Long before Towne Center and the Isle of Palms connector were constructed, Richard's has held down the fort on that side of Mount Pleasant.
'Cold Beer, Hot Lunches" reads the marquee on the sign for Richard's Bar & Grill in Mount Pleasant. But Richard's is much more.
What looks like a little hole-in-the-wall bar along U.S. Highway 17, past the Isle of Palms connector heading toward Georgetown, offers plenty once inside. A Mount Pleasant staple for years, Richard's is a place where everyone from young couples to blue- and white-collar workers and burly bikers can mix and mingle, drink and eat, relax and get rowdy.
On the night of my visit, young folks were dancing to some old-school country music, and both Alabama's "Dixieland Delight" and Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" set the mood well. "Eclectic" is the best way to describe Richard's layout, where old pictures of '50s and '60s icons and television shows adorn the walls. There's also darts, billiards, video games and a cozy little outdoor porch that remains close to the inside action.
It offers affordable daily lunch specials, typical burger and sandwich bar fare along with unusual items such as asparagus fries.
Richard's best qualities lie in its character, and not only is everyone welcome, but few are disappointed.
