MUSC announces four-day furlough

The Post and Courier
Monday, November 24, 2008

Medical University of South Carolina announced that it will absorb the nearly $17 million shortfall in state appropriations through a mandatory four-day furlough for 1,200 of its 5,000 employees.

Monthly paid employees will have a reduction equal to one day of pay for each month from January through April. Employees paid bi-weekly will have each of their 11 paychecks reduced equally to account for the four days of leave.

Those who work in clinical settings treating patients and in research are not required to take the unpaid leave, said MUSC President Ray Greenberg, who will be taking eight days of voluntary furlough.

Each department within the university will carry out reduced budget plans that include cutting supplies, training and equipment.

The university will leave nearly 80 vacant positions unfilled and scrutinize travel expenses. Only nine of the 31 approved capital projects will move forward, Greenberg said, and those are only the most critical, such as air conditioning.

Seven percent, or $100 million, of the university’s operating budget comes from state appropriations.

Happy Holidays to MUSC employees from your leader..or should we say Scrooge. Should have never built that hospital...he really sold you all down the river on that one!!!

Best thing I ever did was to leave MUSC. I loved the job I had, but administration did not care at all for the employee. They know the people taking the hit in the pay check won't say a word because they need the job, but it would speak volumes for some of MUSC's administration and double dipping docs to give up a few dollars they will never notice gone from their pay checks- won't happen though- they'll do just what they are doing, taking it away from the people that need it the most. Once again, tell us how much MUSC cares!

The part of the equation that Dr. Greenberg conveniently leaves out of recent discussions about MUSC problems is that the Taj Mahal ART hopital was built during declining healthcare funding, with unrealistic volume expectations, and duplicated innumerable expensive hospital services.
