All-black Civil War unit to be honored
Saturday, November 22, 2008
BOSTON — The famed 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry is making a comeback. The all-black unit that won praise during the Civil War for its doomed charge on Battery Wagner in 1863, is being reorganized and redesignated as the Massachusetts National Guard's ceremonial unit. Gov. Deval Patrick and Maj. Gen. Joseph Carter, the adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard, are scheduled to hold a Statehouse ceremony on Friday to reactivate the unit. As a ceremonial unit, the 54th will conduct proper military honors at state functions and at funeral services for veterans. The unit's charge on Battery Wagner outside Charleston was commemorated in the 1989 movie "Glory."

This would make a great field trip for kids in third and fourth grade to see this ceremony!

Why wouldn't it be great for anyone else to see? I think it would be good for all ages and races.

That's cool. Next.

Next,"historians" will discover that the 54th won the war singlehandedly the same way they determined that the Tuskegee airman were unparalleled in their bravery and commitment to duty during WWII.
My uncle who was an aviator in the WWII Army Air Corp had a slightly different take on that bit of new age folk lore.
Giving credit where credit is due is expected, anything else could be construed as bovine scat.
Lat time I checked the governor of the socialist commonwealth of Massachusetts was a black man.
Might there be a hint of political correctness here?
No, I'm not a member of the Aryan nation, KKK or even the Boy Scouts. Just an observer!

Jim
First I would like to say that from what little I know about the 54th, they were the best the free blacks had to offer, were well trained and well lead, unfortunately they where given an impossible task and they failed, this happened a lot during that terrible war.
We see a lot of comments like your, presumably made by lefties, I don’t think your boy would approve.
How do you feel about Obama (the man of change) filling the important posts of his organization with Washington insiders and centrists?

Spanky,
Why being so rough on Yird? The "man of change" has elected to send his kids to Sidewell Friends School ($500 per wk.) instead of a public school. How's it feel to know the 1st black pres. doesn't trust his own 2 kids to go to school w/ other black little kids? He chose to send them, like other Washington power brokers, to a private school damning the efforts of people like myself who want the best education for all children, regardless of color. Gotta ask you, why don't you ever mention he is at least 1/2 WHITE?

I am fairly new to blogging and so have tried to educate my self about it. One of the topics of interest is the term “troll”. Which in fairy tales is the dreadful creature under the bridge, but means something else here. The more experienced bloggers recommend ignoring what trolls have to say and some of the more advanced forums include an “ignore” button which can be used to make their comments not visible. Unfortunately, the P&C forums are not advanced - no ignore button and no spell checker, so we must just ignore the troll’s comments and do our composition off site on a word processing program.

Jim,
I am shocked you cannot realize "Jamal the recipient" outdid "Joe the plumber" or maybe McCain would have won. The difference is we are willing to give Mr. O'Bama a chance to do a good job. Even though he will not produce a valid and thats the key, a valid birth certificate.

Yes, I am now sure we have a troll in our midst.

Where is that "ignore" button when I need it. Please P&C upgrade and while your doing it get your comment counter glitch fixed and in sync.

Neponset, if we could get everyone to ignore comments by people like johnq, aka, spankerbuns, aka, JimIslander, then just maybe the quality of the forums would improve.
He accuses everyone of hiding behind anonymous usernames, yet he does the same thing and keeps changing his.
Ignore the racists, the purely hateful, and the name callers period.

I agree. My I suggest that we also click the only option we have - “(suggest removal)”

Neponset;Don't ignore Jim rodent brain islander, feed the fire till it burns itself out.
He's unable to separate fact from fiction and as such has these uncontrollable rages that drive him to spew out his childish invectives.
A little more egging on could result in the mother of all fits as he smashes his keyboard and monitor. Maybe his thumping gizzard will take a dump on him if he get's sufficiently agitated.
He tries to come across as a proud black man.
He's probably white (liberal) and if had been with the 54th he would have been one of those "superior" Yankee officers sending those poor "inferior" devils to certain death as they stormed the heavily defended Wagner position.
Black or white is irrelevant as is he!

As an ardent student of the "War for Southern Independence", I think it is tremendous that an all "African-American" (back then all of them probably couldn't say that) fighting unit is being honored as a ceremonial unit. I have read some on R.G. Shaw and then watched "Glory" several times. "Neponset" was right about the training and leadership. Unfortunately the Union forces suffered, early on, from a really shallow pool of leadership talent.
IMHO, it IS a shame that the 54th was from Massachusetts. Most of the politicians - then and now - can't appreciate the sacrifice.

Don’t be so hard on Mass (actually I am from there - long ago), after all that is where the rev. started, somewhere along the way they lost their way - I am thankful that I am out of there.

This is a good thing.
"Glory" is an awesome movie to watch. Those men of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry fought and they fought bravely with honor and respect as both sides did. They all fought for what they believed in.
The Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War is fast approaching. Being that Charleston is where the first shots were fired, I hope there are many major events in the planning (not just the small events that happen each year) .. It would also be an excellent time for another movie to be made about the war.
I may watch Glory again this weekend. It's sad ... but it's a good reminder of many things from our past. We've let our crooked politicians get a hold of us and they continue to tax us to death and take away more and more of our freedoms. There seems to be no end.

yird is just expressing his opinion and thoughts. Yet those who are bitter and full of hate are always so quick to attack another for such. I guess it makes them feel good or powerful or both.
I hope you have a nice day JimIslander.

Lets call this what it really is,
an attempt by the Mass. politicians to make themselves look better, any one going only with it is an apologist whitey to feel better about itself.
This has nothing to do with obama as president or mccain going to the home, this is all for show, to make anything more of it is dam near retarded.
//ugh, why do I even bother?

Why doesn't Folly Beach have a plaque or some memorial in its river park? Thats where the seige of Ft Wagner started.

I'm confused about Yird's comments.
Are you saying the 54th or the Tuskegee Airmen did not deserve the accolades that were afforded to them?
Apparently you have a relative that somehow has proof to dispute what was said about these two groups, is that correct?
If I’m correct, these two groups have been historically looked upon favorably in history, long before being ‘Politically Correct’ was the norm in the media, classroom and elsewhere.
I find it interesting that you felt compelled to dismiss the good done by these groups, albeit covertly through ‘stories’ of a relative.
Pardon me if I find your motives suspect.
Oh by the way, I’m no fan of either the flaming liberals or the ‘cut & paste’ so-called conservative crowd.
I actually think for myself.
Also, I don’t remember ANYONE trying to get any member of the 54th or Tuskegee Airmen canonized for sainthood. They, like many other groups who have positively contributed to our American history, are simply being not only remembered but honored.
And apparently you have a problem with that. Please accept my compassion for you not being able to understand or appreciate the accolades afforded to these very brave men.
