AFF martial artists place at event
Ulises Velasquez of Arts For Fitness, a Charleston-based martial arts studio, captured a gold medal in tae kwon do at the Disneyland Martial Arts Festival on Oct. 24-26.
The event consisted of martial arts demonstrations, seminars, and competition for martial arts practitioners from around the world.
Velasquez was one of three AFF members to earn medals at the meet. Velasquez took first in the adult male colored belt division of tae kwon do. Chris Millspaugh earned a silver medal for his second place finish in the adult male black belt division of sport jujitsu and bronze in adult male black belt tae kwon do. Adrian Sproull took silver in the adult male colored belt division of taekwondo.
W. Ashley to hold soccer playoffs
All-star soccer teams in three co-ed age groups will compete in the South Carolina Athletic Programs Southern District Playoffs at West Ashley Park on Saturday.
In the Under 10 division, teams from Charleston, North Charleston and Jasper are competing in two groups, A and B. The U13 division bracket includes Charleston, Bluffton, Mount Pleasant and Jasper, while the U17 playoff features Mount Pleasant, Charleston and North Charleston.
Twelve games are scheduled beginning at 9 a.m. The last match of the day is at 4 p.m. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children and students. Lloyd's Soccer and Nike Soccer will showcase new products and equipment at the event, with Nike bringing its 50-foot motor home as part of its nationwide promotional tour for its new line of soccer apparel and gear.
Winners in all divisions advance to the South Carolina Athletic Programs State Championship in Rock Hill Dec. 6. In the U10 division, the Group A winner and the top two teams from Group B advance to the State Championship. The runner-up in the U13 division will play in a State Championship play-in game Dec. 3.
The event is hosted by the West Ashley Youth Sports, a youth sports partnership between the City of Charleston Recreation Department and St. Andrew's Parks and Playground. For more information, call 769-8246.
