SC Senate's new members get acquainted

COLUMBIA - Eight of the Senate's nine new members are getting acquainted with how they'll do their legislative jobs in January.

Senate Clerk Jeff Gossett on Thursday briefed the freshmen on parking, ethics, choosing committees and the rules that control how legislation is handled.

Six of the new members are Statehouse veterans. Sen. Mike Rose won two terms in his seat beginning in 1988. Sens. Phil Shoopman, Creighton Coleman, John Scott and Mick Mulvaney moved up from state House seats. Sen. Tom Davis is former chief of staff and top lobbyist for Gov. Mark Sanford.

This is the first freshman class in three decades to take office in an all-male Senate. Primary and election day losses made it the nation's only Senate where all seats are held by men.
