COLUMBIA — A man has been charged with murder after the victim in a fight earlier this week died in a Columbia hospital. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says 30-year-old Damon Lamont Scott had been arrested Sunday evening and charged with aggravated assault and battery following a fight in a bar southeast of Columbia. Lott says the charge was upgraded to murder on Tuesday after 38-year-old James Norman Simmons died at Palmetto Health Richland hospital on Monday. Lott says the men had fought early Saturday and Simmons suffered a blow to the head. Scott was arrested the next day in Eastover. It was unclear Wednesday if Simmons had an attorney.
