Young activists fired up in fight against coal
JOHNSONVILLE — Outside the high school here Tuesday night, as people gathered for a public hearing, three young women wrestled with a big black inflatable coal plant that looked similar to a jump castle — except for the words "CLEAN UP DIRTY COAL PLANTS NOW" on the side.
One woman trying in vain to get the prop's smoke stacks raised was Katheryn Hilton, 20, of Aiken, who two months ago spent 11 hours in jail after being arrested at a demonstration at a coal plant in Virginia. Hilton said coal is a dirty technology that will spew mercury into the air and waterways and contribute to global warming.
Special reports
Read the special report series on mercury from The Post and Courier.
Also see the special report series on toxic ash from The Post and Courier.
Next to her, Sara Tansey, 20, looked for leaks. She took a year off from the University of South Carolina to fight the coal industry. "There are lots of young people who got engaged on the climate and energy issue during the election," she said. "I think young people are really awakening to injustice of the whole life cycle of coal."
Across the country, anti-coal activists, many of them students in their 20s, are attending hearings and engaging in demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience reminiscent of the protests their parents might have seen in the 1970s against nuclear plants.
It's a big change from the 1990s when utilities went on a coal-plant construction binge with little or no controversy. But today, projects such as Santee Cooper's plan to build its Pee Dee coal plant face a new generation activists, along with the usual cadre of established environmental groups.
"It's a little intimidating to be here with people in their 40s and 50s," said Sara Sprehn, 19, a sophomore at the College of Charleston. She and seven others from the college drove two hours to attend a state Department of Health and Environmental Control hearing about the plant's effect on state waterways. "We're educated about the issues, and we want our opinions to be heard."
Santee Cooper is seeking state and federal permits to build two 600-megawatt generators.
As part of the permitting process, DHEC and the Army Corps of Engineers must hold a series of public hearings. Tuesday's focus was on water quality, and about 200 people gathered in the Johnsonville High School gymnasium to support or oppose the project.
As in past hearings, some argued that the new plant would create new jobs. Santee Cooper officials insisted that the plant would be the cleanest of its kind. Their supporters said without the plant, the region could face brownouts and blackouts.
Meanwhile, other residents said they worry that the coal plant will pollute the air and waterways and contribute to global warming. Some cited information from the recent Post and Courier series "Toxic Ash," which revealed that coal ash is contaminating groundwater at some landfills and ponds with arsenic and other heavy metals many times the federal drinking water limit.
DHEC officials said they plan to take these comments into account as they decide whether to grant Santee Cooper a permit, but government regulators and environmental groups all have said they expect the matter to end up in a court battle.
A wild card in the coal debate is whether anti-coal activists take the matter to different arenas.
In the past several months, protesters picketed a coal plant in Kansas. They formed human barriers outside a plant in Virginia, where Hilton and 10 others were arrested.
In April, activists locked themselves to bulldozers outside a Duke Power plant under construction in western North Carolina and spread a banner that said "Global Warming Crime Scene." Police used stun guns to control some of the demonstrators and arrested eight people. This fall, Al Gore said, "We've reached the stage where it's time for civil disobedience to prevent construction of new coal-fired power plants that do not have sequestration."
During the hearing, Hilton became emotional as she talked about her concerns. She said she drove four hours to be here and had a four-hour drive back that night. "I'm here representing thousands of South Carolina youths who say coal is not the answer to the state's energy problems."

These kids should launch an ad campaign to curb population growth in the greater Charleston area. I doubt many of these protesters took a logic course that discussed the concept of supply and demand.
Protesters: Challenge the supporters' claim that without this new plant, there will be brownouts and blackouts. Also, present research studies about existing plants' pollution records to your county legislators--what has Santee Cooper done to decrease the environmental impact that these existing plants contribute through water pollution and increased green house gases? Furthermore, find out about the people involved in granting state and federal permits--how can you steer their decisions in a legal and persuasive manner to win your case?
Find out what kind of help they need--what facts are they looking at to aid their decisions and how can you supplement those facts and widen their perspectives?
Imagine you were the one to grade the reports printed in response to Santee Cooper's permit requests. What kinds of environmental regulations would you want enforced at this new plant if it were built? What about the older plants? What evidence can you present to prove Santee Cooper isn't maintaining its facilities properly?
Protesters: Prove the Power of Your Pens are Mightier than the Power of a Utility Company's Fat Wallet.

if the atmosphere and oceans continue to warm up at their current rate, sea level will rise at least 18 inches in this century. If we increase carbon levels in the atmosphere, that could rise by several feet more. It we stop emitting now, it's still going to rise.
18 Inches of increase in sea level will eliminate tens of millions of acres of agricultural land worldwide, putting upward pressure on the cost of food and causing political disruptions.
Locally Morris Island and most of Folly Island will disappear. How much of our other coastal island will remain will come down to how much we want to pay to keep rebuilding them. Raising the entire beach by two feet, thousands of feet out into and under the Atlantic and keeping it at that level will cost a fortune.
I just visited Pensacola Beach. FEMA and the State of Florida decided to abandon miles of beachfront because rebuilding the roads, infrastructure and dunes again didn't make economic sense. Too many powerful Hurricanes, too much erosion and not enough money. You can still build your beach house out there, you'll have to get there by boat or dune buggy, bring your own water, generate your own power and you can't get flood insurance.
We can't keep pushing the Planet's limits forever. There are six billion people on the Planet now. They will push back and they outnumber us. Sending our army out to attempt to control their oil fields isn't going to be cost effective.
To survive with a decent standard of living we need to be more efficient and less wasteful. The sooner we make that adjustment, the wealthier we'll be. We shouldn't commit to more coal or nuclear plants until we exhausted our conservation and renewable efforts.
We don't have to live in the dark and the cold, we just don't need to live in an oversized leaky house ten miles from the grocery store and five miles from our children's school. We aren't going to be able to afford it.
We will make the adjustment, by choice early with more options or by miserable necessity later when we're forced to by cost.
We're already making choices. Why do you think all those big houses in Mt. Pleasant beyond Highway 41 are sitting empty? Enough people just don't have the time and money to live that way any longer.

Espeically, if you want to replace all existing forms of producing energy immediately. Wonder how all these people who posted against the power industries use of coal, could have save some power by reading a printed newspaper and then hand writing a letter to the editor about their beliefs. I'm not out to prove anything to you, I simply said that I had personal prrof. You are free to choose your own beliefs and I will respect whatever choice you make. However, the science that I have studied has not proven anything about man-made global warming. This is coming from an environmental engineer who has studied this for 14 years. I give all scientific studies a chance, but am smart enough to see when statistics are being frabricated to promote an agenda. That is what is being done by the liberal environmentalist in regards to man-made global warming. It's that simple.

The people that are trying to disprove global warning have an agenda also, and they usually have the energy companies in their pockets. Global warming and climate change is not debatable, true it is difficult to draw a definite correlation, but it does not disprove it either, and most scientists will concur with this observation.
The only thing is the affects if there is a correlation, yet to me global warming makes complete logical sense, yet I can not say the same thing about religion.

So, in you logic, concerning global warming, what was the cause of the end of the last ice age. You know, when there were glaciers in the area we now call Kentucky? That was about 20,000 years ago. Must have been the same time that fire was discovered and the carbon emissions began. It is called, and I will say this very slowly, C-L-I-M-A-T-E C-H-A-N-G-E.... Or, as I like to call it, "The beginning of global warming." I'm sure all the people north of Tennessee are happy about that. The fact is, the earth is constantly going through changes. Man cannot change nature. Man cannot cause nature. It is as simple as that.

It would take a book to go into any detail about climate change, and while I do have more than an elementary knowledge about climate, I am not an expert.
Sure climate change happens naturally, yet humans have caused environmental change (including climate) throughout history, and this is consensus knowledge amongst scientist. From the dust bowl, to over farming in Africa, to swamp water intrusion in Australia, it does not take much human involvement to effect the environment. Sure, man can not cause nature, yet he can change it and lead to its detriment, and there are several observable instances throughout history where this has happened and this is fact not opinion.

I never stated that there was a consensus of scientist stating that global warming is man made. There are the ones that are still in the pockets of energy companies and big oil that will dispute that there is no correlation.
My quote, which was more a response to Bulldog stating that
"Man can not change nature"
I stated,
"yet humans have caused environmental change (including climate) throughout history, and this is consensus knowledge amongst scientist."
Again, I stated environmental change, not global warming, and the examples were indisputable and any scientist worth his salt will not dispute that humans have had an effect on the environment.
I gave a couple of examples such as the dust bowl, salt water intrusion in wet lands and I could have gone on for days. Another example, an Urban Heat Island
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_island
Simple concept of where land is hotter in urban areas because of the man made structures, such as pavement. This is fact, not opinion.
Yes, while there might not be a consensus that global warming is man made, many scientist believe that it is.

BulldogTLC (anonymous) says...
When stating that man cannot change nature, I meant at a global scale. Yes heat islands exist, there have been cases where freshwater flows from rivers have been restricted and saltwater has gradually moved upstream. Farming practices contributed to the dust bowl, combined with natural wind. This is not proof of man-made global warming. In fact the heat islands are not "caused" by the man-made structures, but are natural heat retained by the structures. You have still produced no proof that humans are responsible for climate change. I will tell you why - because there is no PROOF. There are theories, which can be disproven time and time again by historical data that shows natural variations in the global climate long before any industrialization. What caused the glaciers to melt in Kentucky 20,000 years ago?
