Clyburn re-elected Majority Whip

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, November 19, 2008

As was widely expected, Sixth District Rep. James Clyburn won re-election to his post as U.S. House Majority Whip, the third highest ranking position in Congress.

Two years ago, Clyburn became the highest ranking black member in Congress and the second black member to be elected to Majority Whip. With the Democratic party increasing its majority in the House during the past elections, his re-election — along with the party's other congressional leaders —appeared to be a given.

"I am humbled and honored to be reelected by my colleagues," Clyburn said in a statement. "This is a critical time in our nation's history and we will have to make critical decisions to keep our country united and moving in a new direction."

I hope the people of the Lowcountry understand how valuable this is for our region. With Henry Brown having declining influence within the minority party under a Democratic President, we're lucky to have a powerful member of the US congress representing our area. The stimulus spending everyone agrees is necessary won't miss the Lowcountry thanks to James Clyburn.

How about you asking Mr. Clyburn if he would consider reducing the number of inefficient government programs and reduce our taxes that are funding them.

That way, we get to keep our money and produce our own stimulus for our region.
