Guard overseeing boat's removal

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

KIAWAH ISLAND — The U.S. Coast Guard is continuing to oversee the removal of a fishing vessel grounded on the island.

The 77-foot Nanami broke free of its anchor chain Thursday evening and ran aground on the island Friday.

Charleston Marine Services has been contracted to remove the vessel and any potential pollutants onboard. The company has removed about 250 of 900 gallons of fuel onboard, the Coast Guard said Tuesday. It said a containment boom has been placed around the vessel to prevent damage to the environment. No effects on wildlife has been reported.

The contractor will try to remove the Nanami when all preparations have been made.

This could go bad really quick. If Charleston Marine Services can't get the job done by today, I'd expect some serious equiptment and costs.

Two days later and it's still there?
