State police investigate SC fire district
SPARTANBURG — State police are investigating allegations of embezzlement in a South Carolina fire district.
State Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons told the Herald Journal of Spartanburg on Monday that its investigation of the Westview-Fairforest Fire District began this summer. Timmons says the investigation was requested by the South Carolina Retirement Systems.
Westview-Fairforest fire Chief David Culbreth told the newspaper he welcomes the investigation. He blamed a previous administration for the financial trouble.
Information circulated before the fire district's board of commissioners meeting this week includes a letter from an accounting firm, saying it has not been paid for its services and it thinks the district has failed to properly file payroll tax information.
