Greenwood textile plant lays off 300

GREENWOOD — A nylon manufacturing plant in South Carolina is laying off 300 workers.

Solutia Inc. spokeswoman Missy Hammond said the decision to idle the plant in Greenwood came because of the poor economy. She said the company has seen an unprecedented drop in demand for nylon in the past six weeks.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports the company said the layoffs began in August, but many of them occurred last weekend. Some of the workers laid off worked directly for Solutia, while others worked at the plant through a contract company.
