Thigpen getting better each week

The spread offense appears to agree with Kansas City quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

The former Coastal Carolina All-American has been among the top quarterbacks in the AFC the last two or three weeks. After a dismal performance in his first NFL start against Atlanta during the third week of the season, Thigpen has been as hot as any quarterback in the league in his last three starts.

To take advantage of Thigpen's athletic ability, the Chiefs have gone almost exclusively to a shotgun formation and a spread offense mentality.

Over the last three weeks, Thigpen has completed 66 of 102 passes for 710 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions His all-important quarterback rating over that span has been 102.9. Put that into perspective, Arizona's Kurt Warner leads the NFL with a quarterback rating of 106.4.

Thigpen is coming off his best game of the season against San Diego when he threw for 266 yards and three TDs. Unfortunately for Kansas City, the Chiefs have lost all three games.

For the season, the former Fairfield Central running back has completed 104 of 192 passes for 1,102 yards with eight TDs and four interceptions. He has also rushed for 121 yards on 19 attempts and another score.

"You saw some flashes against Atlanta, but we turned the ball over three or four times and the game got away from us early," said Kansas City coach Herm Edwards. "We put him back down and he didn't play again. Due to the injury to Damon (Huard), he had to come back and play and it was his first time out against Brett Favre in New York and he played well, played well enough for us to win and didn't turn the ball over.

"He repeated that the following week against Tampa at home. We went on the road and he did it again this week against San Diego. He's a guy that's progressed every week. He's gaining confidence in himself and it's a tribute to him and the coaching staff that we feel he can do well. You talk about the guy who's only started four games. He still has a long way to go. He's done fairly well so far."

--Cornerback Justin Miller was cut by the New York Jets on Tuesday to make room on the roster for former New England Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law.

Miller didn't have to wait long to find another job as the Oakland Raiders picked him up off of waivers Wednesday. The former Clemson star, who was a Pro Bowl kick returner in 2006, is expected to return kicks this weekend against Miami.

Miller missed most of the 2007 season with a knee injury and has missed most of the current season with a dislocated big toe.

Miller, a second-round pick in 2005, was picked to the Pro Bowl in 2006 when he averaged 28.3 yards per kick return. He has returned three kickoffs for scores during his career.

In 34 games with the Jets, Miller had 97 tackles and eight interceptions.

--Former James Island star Langston Moore was cut by the Detroit Lions last week.

Moore, a four-year veteran, had played for Cincinnati, Arizona and Detroit during his career. His best season came in 2004 with the Bengals, when he started eight games and recorded a career-high 31 tackles.

This season he had nine tackles in seven games with the Lions.
