Clemson rolls past Hofstra in Charleston Classic
By Charles Bennett
Clemson may yet find a team in the Charleston Classic that can give the Tigers a challenge, but it wasn't to be found in Friday night's first round.
The Tigers dominated from start to finish in a 98-69 victory over Hofstra in front of a Carolina First Arena crowd of 4,582.
"It was a good first game," said Clemson coach Oliver Purnell. "We've been progressing for the last couple weeks. And I thought tonight we progressed from our exhibition game and we progressed during the game. We weren't doing a lot of things well early but I attribute that to just kind of trying to get a feel for playing in a game. We got better as the game went on."
The Tigers (1-0) will play Texas Christian (1-0) at 8 p.m. tonight with the winner advancing to the tournament championship game at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Hofstra (0-1) will play at 5:30 p.m. against Western Michigan (0-1).
TCU beat Western Michigan 67-63 in Friday's first game.
Clemson led 39-24 at the half, leaving only the question of whether Hofstra could come out for the second half, make a run, and put some pressure on the Tigers.
It didn't happen. Clemson led by 24, 59-35, with 13:30 to play and continued to pull away.
All the Tigers' starters were on the bench most of the final 10 minutes.
Trevor Booker led the Tigers with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Clemson also got 15 points from Terrence Oglesby, 13 from Raymond Sykes, and 10 from K.C. Rivers.
The Tigers forced 23 turnovers and blocked seven shots.
