Wolves daunting in AA

Bishop England football coach John Cantey didn't show his team horrors movies this week in preparation for today's game against Timberland. But what the Bishops watched was certainly scary.

"I almost had to turn off the video," Cantey said. "We were watching video of Timberland, and they couldn't believe how big they were, how fast they were. The biggest thing about this week is getting the guys to believe in themselves, to get them to think they can beat Timberland. Timberland's probably the best team in the Lowcountry even though they are Class AA school."

The Bishops hit the road for today's 7:30 p.m. playoff game, and they must be ready on offense and defense. The Bishops, who come in with a 9-2 record, face an undefeated Timberland team that has pretty much cruised through the regular season and the first round of the playoffs. The 11-0 Wolves lead the state, regardless of classification, in scoring, with an average of 49.0 points per game. They have the No. 3 scoring defense in the state, allowing only 6.3 points per game.

The Wolverines didn't even shift into second gear in last week's 52-0 win over Aynor. The Wolves held Aynor to 82 yards, while the starters on offense played sparingly. Rockarius King carried only eight times for 77 yards, ande Rennis Black had 10 attempts for 80 yards.

King is one of four Wolves headed to postseason all-star play. King and offensive lineman Quinton Washington will play in the Shrine Bowl, while defensive end Aldrick Fordham and offensive lineman Storm Moore will play in the North-South game.

That's pretty much the cast of characters the Wolves had last year when they edged the Bishops, 21-14. King had the momentum-changing play of the game, a 76-yard touchdown run right before halftime.

"We have to keep them from making big plays," Cantey said. "If they score, it has to be on long drives. We have to make them earn it. Even though we lost last year, it was a one-score game and we had our chances. Based on that, and what we did against Edisto last week, we have a chance."

The Bishops topped Edisto, 24-7. Mikell Fosberry threw two touchdown passes, and the Bishops came up big in special-teams play as Thomas Warren kicked a 25-yard field goal and Thomas Grimsley returned a kickoff 96 yards for the Bishops' other score.
