Sanford to run for president?
By Yvonne Wenger
COLUMBIA - Gov. Mark Sanford has been charged by the nation's Republican governors to lead their association through the toughest times the GOP party has faced since 1994.
The two-term South Carolina governor was elected by his peers Friday to serve as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, the same day the Washington Post mentioned him as a potential candidate for president in 2012.
In an exclusive interview with The Post and Courier by phone Friday, Sanford did not rule out a run but said that's not where he is focused.
Sanford said the party has a lot of work to do to get ready to take Congress back in 2010 before it can begin to think about its next presidential candidate.
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour was voted the association's vice chairman. Texas Gov. Rick Perry was named finance chairman and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue will serve as recruitment chairman.
"I am honored and excited to become chairman of the Republican Governors Association as we work together to win a majority of Governors by 2010," Sanford said in a statement released by the association. "Republican governors are natural leaders who will find solutions to our nation's challenges and bring back the party."

Is SC ready for a national examination of the performance of our Government over the past eight years? Do we really want the entire nation picking through the facts about our high crime rate, poor child health, low education levels, low income levels and everything else?
Our numbers just don't commend a SC politician for National Leadership. The opposition will be happy to point out the state's problems and even when they're charitable, the national media and blogosphere won't be.
Before Sara Palin, I thought Alaska was a state of tough people with a living frontier tradition. Now I understand it has one of the nation's highest rates of rape and teen pregnancy and a really serious problem with political corruption.
SC hasn't elected a President ever (unless Andrew Jackson counts which is disputed) and no Vice President since John C. Calhoun, who resigned. Why sign up for a beating?

Sanford in 2012! If they examine his record they'll see that he stood against the Republicans in the legislature constantly. I hope he runs- without Palin.
