Matchup with Gators 'a little scary'

USC a three-touchdown underdog against Florida

COLUMBIA — Hearing Ray Rychleski talk Monday night, it made you think South Carolina's special teams coordinator would be lining up Saturday afternoon for autographs from No. 3 Florida.

"It's a little scary," Rychleski said of the 24th-ranked Gamecocks matching up with the streaking Gators.

Florida running back Percy Harvin (1) and the No. 3 Gators are threetouchdown favorites Saturday against No. 24 South Carolina.

Florida running back Percy Harvin (1) and the No. 3 Gators are threetouchdown favorites Saturday against No. 24 South Carolina.

He then went through the Florida lineup like he was outlining an all-star team, his eyes getting bigger with each name considered.

"I'm telling you, this team ..." he said, trailing off before starting with the roster. "(Return man) Brandon James is the Devin Hester of college football. (In quarterback Tim) Tebow, you've got the Heisman. You've got (receiver-running back) Percy Harvin. This kid (Jeff) Demps, he might be as good as all of them. The kid (Chris) Rainey.

"Where are they getting these guys? I was watching and said, 'Who are these guys?' And they're using them well. They're getting their money out of their scholarship guys."

Many outside the team have been somewhat surprised to see South Carolina (7-3, 4-3 SEC) installed as a 21-point underdog in the game. The previous high in Steve Spurrier's USC tenure was 17, in 2005 at Georgia and last year at LSU.

But everyone associated with the Gamecocks seems content playing the Rocky role. More than content, really.

"We're, what, 21-point, 22-point underdogs?" Rychleski said. "I thought it'd be more, to be honest with you."

It's not just Rychleski. Spurrier has been more complimentary of this Florida team than any in recent memory. And it's not just because he was a Gator himself.

The Gamecocks seem to have their arms wide open, bear-hugging the idea of being a three-touchdown underdog in this game.

Spurrier laid it on pretty thick Tuesday.

When is Tebow most effective, Coach?

NEXT GAME

WHO: South Carolina (7-3, 4-3) at Florida (8-1, 6-1)

WHEN: Saturday, 3:30 p.m.

WHERE: Gainesville, Fla.

TV: WCSC (CBS)

LINE: Florida by 21

"He's most dangerous probably running and throwing," Spurrier said, flashing a grin after that one.

How fast are the Gators, Coach?

"They may be the fastest in college ball this year," he said. "Easily could be."

What makes Tebow and the offense so successful, Coach?

"They've got a lot of good plays on for him at the right time. I've noticed that," Spurrier said. "Dan Mullen, their quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, I think he's one of the best in the country, also. He's got good players, like all of us do. But they use them very well."

Complimenting an offensive coach? That's hardly the norm for Spurrier.

Linebacker Jasper Brinkley said he doesn't think any team in the country is playing better than Florida.

"Honestly," he said. "I don't."

In the five-game winning streak since that seemingly implausible home loss to Ole Miss, the Gators have put up a mind-boggling 48.6 points a game. No one's been close to them.

Now it's a chance to see how USC's improved, top-ranked defense matches up. The Gamecocks are giving up eight fewer yards a game (256.5) than any other team in the SEC.

"Our defense is pretty healthy. They'll be ready to play," Spurrier said. "Our guys will be ready to play. The whole team should be ready to play. There's absolutely no pressure on the Gamecocks going down there to play this game."

The flow of praise has been so intense early this week that it's overtaken the idea of Spurrier's return to his alma mater.

"Yeah, I think that's pretty old," Spurrier said. "I think there's a lot more on the line for those guys. We've got a lot to play for. They've got a lot to play for."

More, in fact, than the Gamecocks. Florida (8-1, 6-1) has already sewn up the division title. Coach Urban Meyer this week acknowledged that he's talked with his team, albeit briefly, about its national title hopes.

With three wins, including the SEC title game against Alabama, Florida would figure to have played its way into the championship.

But, alas, there was a point when the lauding of Florida stopped. Rychleski halted himself, changing tune to an underlying theme of determination for the Gamecocks, who have yet to beat a ranked team this season.

"We've got to play. We're good. We're a good team," he said. "We're going to fire every bullet we have. We'll do everything in the playbook to try and win this game. We're not going to play it close. Nobody cares about close."

The game two years ago in the Swamp is perhaps evidence of that. A couple of blocked kicks — a field goal and an extra point — and a false start penalty are all that separated USC from upsetting a team that went on to win the national championship.

"That was a tough moment for us, and me especially," senior kicker Ryan Succop said. "It would be a heck of a way to go out, being a senior and it being my last year. It would be awesome to win and go down and beat Florida in the Swamp."

Extra points

-- Spurrier said senior Jamon Meredith (ankle) should be 100 percent to start at left guard. Hutch Eckerson split time with him last week at the position.

-- Those worried about Captain Munnerlyn cramping shouldn't be. Spurrier said everyone's keeping the corner away from those fried foods he loves so much.

"Yeah, we try to get him away from Bojangles," Spurrier said. "Don't get mad at me, Bojangles. They've got some good chicken. Yeah, Captain loves fried chicken. He does. It's OK occasionally. You can't make a steady diet of it."

Like the three loses, the running game is the key. If we are able to run the ball, unlike the three loses, and control the clock, keep the defense and their offense off the field we have a chance. We cannot get into a shootout with this team. Hopefully the defense can keep up the pass rush we've had going the last two games, six sacks and a couple of turnovers against Florida, like we did against Tenn and Ark, and this game will be very interesting.

Don't be surprised if this game is closer than the oddsmakers are predicting. I would fully expect FL to win this one. They have all the tools to get it done as they have illustrated this year with the exception of the Ole Miss Game.

If Florida has an achilles heel, it would be their D Line. That is where USC can capitalize if they choose and could be the difference in this game. This should be a pretty good game with a scoring range in the 25-40 point range. We will see who comes out on top.

SC has nothing to loose in this game and will be pulling out all of the stops. Steve Spurrier has yet to pull out some of the fun stuff from his play book. Now is as good a time as any. I saw some of those trick plays last Saturday at the Razorback game.

FL is heading to the SEC championship game (aka. BCS Champion preview) for sure but if they loose prior to that then they can more than likely kiss a BCS championship goodby. In other words, the pressure is on Florida to produce a win, and a big one to keep their BCS hopes alive.

Say, where has ole river boy been? I kind of miss the BLA BLA BLA MYBFF LOL HA HA kind of venacular. I guess he might say something like FL 97 USC 2 LOL LAMECOCKS GO BACK TO LOOSERVILLE LOL MYBFF or some other pubescent rant.

Hey, enjoy the game. It should be a good one, whoever wins. Go Gamecocks!!!

Leave the 2 rivers alone, there are losers. There are on the do not respond list. Since one of the rivers likes to correct posters, maybe someone should tell him XXII is not 12 in roman numerals.LOL. Hey, you cant make up this stuff. He or she posted XXII when ref to the big 12. What a joke

This game will be interesting and scary. The USCe D is no joke and after the Ol' Miss(Grrrrr) debacle, I don't think we'll overlook USC but stranger things have happened. Any team in SEC can beat any team on a given saturday. A Spurrier coached team is always competitive and dangerous and if taken lightly will bite you hard. If USC plays loose and relaxed then the game will get disturbingly interesting.

In the end I don't think it'll be a blow out, a close win for the Gators is my prediction. 21 points is way too generous.

Or D-Line is pretty good this year but ya never know until you play the game.

Here's to a good hard fought game on Saturday. Go Gators.

Loosey Goosey for Scar going in on this one. Spurrier covers it up, but he wants this one the most. He had no chance in '05 or '06 either.

That's right Whooper, and we beat them in '05,and almost beat them in'06,last year was a nightmare though. Here's hoping for a great game!

just don't see how USC is going to score on UF's defense.
I'm more impressed with their defense than their offense, which is really scary! If you could keep UF's offense on the side lines, but that means long sustained drives by USC's offense, don't think thats gonna happen. . .
A smart bet would put money on USC and the points!

Boycott CBS ! Boycott CBS !

CBS will pick up coverage of the USC-FLA game after the end of the GA-AU game which starts at 1pm! Great huh!

Doesn't the UGA/AU game start at 12:30 not 1?

Posted by UrGatorbait on November 12, 2008 at 4:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Screw CBS. Why do we have to watch UGAly and The toothless Tigers? Sheesh. Well it beats Raycom all to heck.

let's just don't get any limbs broken so we can be healthy for yabba dabba do and the tiggers. don't go ballistic on me here, just being real.

Has nothing to do with CBS. I'll be watching the game in its entirety several states away. Most of us will get to see the entire game. You won't because WCSC (not CBS) carries the 12:30 SEC game. Or you could go to a sports bar and watch the entire game.

As long as we don't have to listen to Verne and Daniels slobber on each other. CBS stinks oh yeah and so does WCSC.. Nah :-)

someone told me you could go to cbs sportsline dot com and watch the start of the game in streaming video.

WCSC and CBS Suck !
