Group wants workplace raids halted
By Noah Haglund
A statewide Christian group has called for a moratorium on federal immigration raids in South Carolina, at least until the U.S. government overhauls its immigration laws.
A workplace raid that netted more than 300 suspected illegal immigrants at the Columbia Farms plant in Greenville last month was one of the main factors that prompted Monday's statement from the South Carolina Christian Action Council.
"That raised the level of awareness because it was an egregious situation," said the Rev. Joe Darby, president of the Council's board of directors and pastor at Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston. "It was disturbing to see that kind of raid in America, which claims to be a welcoming country."
A spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, said the agency has no intention of suspending raids. "We are enforcing the law as mandated by Congress," Barbara Gonzalez said.
The Christian Action Council, a partnership of 16 denominations, some 4,300 congregations and nearly 1.1 million total members, contends that the raids target people based on profiling by appearance, accent or limited English skills. ICE disagreed.
"That is absolutely false," Gonzalez said. "If they have any examples, I'd be more than happy to look into it."
The council also said the raids unfairly separate detainees from their families, particularly children; leave families without an easy way to find a detained relative; make people less likely to report crimes to local police; and do not solve the illegal-immigration problem.
Victoria Middleton, executive director of the South Carolina American Civil Liberties Union, said the agency was aware of such problems in other states, and is keeping watch for them here. The U.S. Constitution guarantees due process to all persons in the country, Middleton said, not just to U.S. citizens.
"We're certainly aware of the raids that have been taking place and the ACLU certainly has concerns," she said. "There is concern about an indiscriminate process of targeting predominately Latino communities and work sites."
A comprehensive bill that would have granted immigrants a path to citizenship failed in the U.S. Senate last year.
Robert Condy, an immigration attorney in Charleston, said the detention process leaves families guessing. Once families reach the appropriate person within ICE, he said, they often receive answers, Condy said. But that can be extremely difficult without an attorney. "It's definitely a very confusing situation," he said. "It's very common for me to get calls from people who are very confused and upset."

Why do you people keep defending illegal immigrants?I mean if there here legally that's no problem.Anyone with children understands someone trying to make a better life for there family, but if there here illegally that's just wrong.I'm not just talking about hispanics i mean all illegals.Just look there taking our jobs, our neighborhoods, our social security, and our way of life. When does it end?Ihope Obama can fix this soon.Otherwise our economy situation is just gonna get worse.

if they dont want to be seperated from their families, maybe they should of not come here illegally,is hard enough to find a job when they all come here and take them, maybe if they are sent back the americans can take back their country and those that cant find jobs will have a chance to get one, they want to stay do it the legal way and then come back.

Unfortunately, gramma35, your friend obama wants to kiss their butts and give them amnesty.
I agree, however that these people are extremely selfish for entering the US illegally because they could care less about their families situation once they are caught. And they do not give a damn about Americans loosing their jobs to their onslaught.
I also believe that local police and sheriffs departments have a responsibility and obligation to the citizens to enforce ALL laws including illegal entrants laws. That is why they are called, "LAW ENFORCEMENT" officers. If they do not want to do their job dump the turds and get officers who will.

Your young men are killing each other at such an alarming rate and now its spilling over to the community (see CSU story)(oh yeah they will be black even though P&C didn't say so) that you should have enough to do tackling this and un-wed teenage mothers (70%) to keep you busy the remainer of you life sir. Solution to avoid confusion and being upset: Don't enter a country illegally and then work in said country illegally. Then you won't be subject to the confusing and upsetting result of being lawfully arrested and deported.

I think that the employers of illegal aliens need to be taken to task. If employers were heavily fined or jailed for hiring illegals, the illegals would not be able to find work and would move on. Likewise, this outcry against racial profiling is a bunch of junk. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it isn't a pig. Rev. Darby is generally a pretty sharp speaker, but I think you've missed the boat on this one.

Don't call the police, they do not want to earn their pay by enforcing ALL laws that they have sworn to enforce. Call ICE and then confront the business with pickets, with public notices in the paper of these treasonist companies and by outing these scum on the internet.

Yes, the raids are based on profiling. You don't see a bunch of old ladies from Canada illegally coming across our borders by the millions. The key word in all of this is ILLEGAL. American citizens break laws and they get fines, criminal records, lose their jobs, etc. People from other countries ILLEGALLY enter ours, and the bleeding hearts whine about us trying to catch them and send them back. Let this group just go with them. I think more raids are in order. A lot more.

I don't understand how people can expect law enforcement to fight certain types of crimes if they don't profile citizens based on whom, how and where crimes are committed. If you have a particular group of people committing a particular crime that you need to target, that group of people needs to be profiled. It doesn't matter to me if the profiling is based on age, sex, race, religious affiliation, hair color or pants size... I just don't care. Profile away and get crime under control! If a policeman stops me and asks me some questions simply because I fall in to a group of people that are frequently committing a certain type of crime... I don't care. I'd consider it to be doing my part in helping to stop the crime. The profiling should not go so far as to invade the privacy of an individual, but asking a few questions of an individual doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me.

My complaint is not so much about the action against illegals, but the "secret police" like actions by ICE when doing these raids.
If law enforcement makes arrests, those arrests are a matter of public record. The media and public at large can go to the arresting agency and review the arrest records seeing exactly who has been arrested and learning where they are being held along with the charges.
ICE arrests people, accusing them of being "illegal" then plays a game of "hide and seek" with any interested parties seeking information about those arrested.
It is "scary" to see the government acting in such ways. I'm much more afraid of our government and its actions destroying our freedoms, than I am of people coming to this country seeking to work!
Just like "the war on drugs" the new "war on illegal immigrants" is looking like another situation where the "cure" will be worse than the disease.

Also, Darby's group seems to be hijacking the term "Christian". Biblically, God establishes all governments. Christ said to pay your taxes. The Bible is full of admonitions to follow the laws of the government at the time, including capital punishment. The only exceptions to this is when the government law conflicted with God's law. For the most part, we have enough immigration laws, and none of them are harmful to anyone.

Immigration Groups Mobilize to Push for 'Pathway to Legalization' Under Obama
Wednesday, November 12, 2008
By Tiffany Gabbay
(CNSNews.com) Immigrant groups are calling on the incoming Obama administration to push for "just and humane immigration reform" and "a pathway to legalization"-amnesty and citizenship for illegal immigrants.
The National Capital Immigrant Coalition (NCIC) and the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM) held a press conference Tuesday at the National Press Club to announce a "mass mobilization" by illegal immigrants that is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 21-one day after the president-elect is sworn into office.
-----------------------------------------------------
How Barack Obama Will Ensure His Victory in 2012
The coup de grace Obama will use against rightist opposition is mostly embodied in one word: Amnesty. This, along with some other measures, will both grow the Hispanic voting block and ingratiate Obama to it. This will enable him to create a powerful coalition of blacks, young voters and Hispanics that, along with the older whites he will be able to retain, will constitute an insurmountable electoral force. And this is why amnesty has long been a dream of the Democrats.
The last time the left proposed amnesty for the 20-30 million (a realistic estimate) illegals in our nation, they were blocked by the Republicans.
Hispanics voted for Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden over Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin by a margin of more than two-to-one in the 2008 presidential election, 66% versus 32% . . . . Latino youth, just as all youth nationwide, supported Obama over McCain by a lopsided margin - 76% versus 19%."
A new infusion of foreign-born Hispanic voters will tilt this block even further left, and it isn't hard to understand why. Most such people have a socialist political orientation, which is why governments in Mexico and much of central and South America also tend have one.

The problem here is that the US Government does NOT have an easy way to verify if a person is here illegally. I live in Texas (I used to live in Charleston) and there are companies here that have tried to find out if future employees are legal or not and they cannot get any information from the government on people. There has got to be a better way for companies to verify that these people are legally or illegally here in the US??? They file the infomation and get NO RESPONSE? Sometimes for years at a time? So how can companies follow the rules if the government won't help them?

JimIslander, OK... your opinion differs from mine on that issue. A friend and I drove back to our old high school to see how it had changed in the years that we had been gone. It was dark when we drove through the lot. A policeman saw us, pulled us over as we were getting ready to leave and asked what we were up to. We told him. He let us go. No foul, no harm. It wasn't an invasion of my privacy. I didn't lose or give up any constitutional rights. I see no problem with the police asking a few questions of people when they have concerns that a crime might be involved. Our differences in opinion don't make either one of us stupid. In fact, those differencing opinions are what keeps everything in balance.
Still you said I "continue to post propaganda that has been disproven and repudiated by the republican party themselves". I asked you to copy and paste an example of where I've done that because I'm pretty sure I haven't done anything like that.

First - illegal immigrants, have NO constitutional rights, they are not US citizens.
second - by being in the US illegaly, the are defacto breaking the law, therefore subject to what requirements that the LAW have in place; apprehension, questioning, departation.
third - you yourself are spitting on the very constitution that you act as if your so concerned about by the very fact that you dont want to enforce our border security and immigration laws.
fourth - breaking our immigration laws is not a "trivial" issue. Secure borders are the very foundation of a free society and its continued survival.
Employers that hire illegals, should be fined for breaking the law and forced to pay all enforcement fees, to include sending illegals home.

I never said being of latino descent, anywhere in my posts.
"They have to be proven guilty in a court of law. Not rounded up en mass and then sorted through until the "good" ones are found and released."
If they are legal citizens, it should take no time to prove it at the time of being "rounded up". If they are illegal, they have no rights to our court system, are breaking the law, and should be sent back to their country of origin.
Again, what part of illegal alien verus US citizen do you not understand?
illegal alien - NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.
US citizen - FULL constitutional rights.
You seem to keep bluring the lines between an illegal - one that has broken the law to get here and continues to break the law to earn money that is than sent to their respective country of origin un-taxed, (while US taxpayers pick up an ever increasing amount of bills for medical care, incarceration cost, and so on) and that of a LEGAL US citizen.
You should cross the Mexican border, get an illegal job there, and then get arrested...you will find out very quickly how welcome you would be their. Mexican prison sound familiar?

Call them now and tell them that we want all immigration laws enforced and we want all counties to train for and be able to enforce the 287g program. We must do this now in order to have the strength to push much stronger immigration laws for SC in the coming year. Remember that the majority of voters across the country do now want another amnesty. We were promised in 1986 that there would not be another amnesty and we must remind them of that daily if necessary. So start now, call, email, fax, whatever it takes to get their attention. Jane - you are very creative. You found a way to bring up Obama's nationality in an article about immigration raids.
As was posted earlier, the only way I think you will be able to stop illegal immigration is to fine (heavily) the companies hiring them.
Let's assume that in every situation you can find and American who is willing to work for the same pay as an illegal immigrant. Since the illegal applicant will not collect unemployment, complain about working conditions, file sexual harassment charges (I'm just saying), etc. Most companies will still hire them. I realize all companies won't but many will. So when you detain and deport them they will return. You cannot arrest and deport the problem away. Money is what brought them here. Take away the opportunity to make money illegally and they will vanish all by themselves, we won't have to lift a finger.
These raids are just an exercise in futility (with our money). I mean seriously. What makes more sense? Spending the money to execute these raids and in the process making more commotion than you need (since they will return as long as there is money to be made) OR fine the companies hiring them (generate revenue, create more job openings, etc.) making the problem go away nice and quietly.

Rev. Darby, that is as absurd, stupid, idiotic and illogical and as unbelievable as any of the worst racist statements I have seen on this forum. That is a hard level of insanity, or outright evil, to achieve.

Ok, they have social security cards, they speak english and they have slight accents. That is why they are trying to get verification about their citizenship. But they get no response from the US Government. So they hire them and then when they get raided, that is when they find out that they are using someone else's social security number. Seems like the government would be a little more helpful.

This is a lady trying to change the laws...her daughter is in the military and was raped by an illegal. She is called S.O.A.R. (Speaking Out Against Rape)
Her daughter was having a gathering at her home. The illegal decided just to walk in as if he belonged. The girl went to bed and this guy attacked and raped her. He had only been here illegal for 3 weeks. This is a few words from her blog...and I agree...if this was your daughter, niece, grand...would you want this illegal to get away with it...and also wonder what disease this scum bucket may have given her...or caused an unwanted pregnancy.
The day after the rape, while talking with the police, my parents were told that my rapist could not be tested for any STDs, HIV, or Hepatitis' because he has rights. This is a big issue that has had my mind frenzied because I don't understand how an illegal alien has rights. How he comes into the country I defend, who rapes me in my own home, in my own bed, and still manages to receive the rights he has not deserved.
Sorry people but I can not agree for illegals to have rights. In Greenville and Greer...just ride up there...walk the streets and the towns...ha...I lived there 1 1/2 years...so yes I saw, and the towns are taken over by illegals in certain areas....GO ICE!!!!!
Preacher you are way in left field on this! We have enough crime on our streets without inviting more.

What part of "ILLEGAL" don't these people understand? If it's a law enforce it. If you break the law face the consequences.
Plain and simple.

To all,
NO ONE TAKES A JOB FROM YOU THAT YOU DIDN'T WANT. IF WE ARE GOING TO TALK LAZINESS: ALL THOSE ON WELFARE, FOOD STAMPS, ETC... WHO MAKES THE MAJORITY OF THEM? AND ALSO, IF YOU THINK OBAMA IS KISSING THE "ILLEGALS'" BUTTS, WHY DID YOU VOTE HIM INTO OFFICE? I love to read everyone's comments! They are quite amuzing! First of all, you want everyone to speak English, when the majority have more errors in their grammar than I can type!
I guess I am safe by assuming all of you are "TRUE" Americans? Talk about blood lines etc.. Even if the illegals are kicked out of this country, our economy is not going to get better. They are not making the economy go sour. Didn't P. Bush did that by sending our troops and $$$ to the "Fight on Terrorism?" Just a thought.
That war has cuased us more money and debt into our GDP than all the illegals combined in this country.

The laws on immigration do NOT need to be 'overhauled', they need to be ENFORCED.
See, it's like this: the rich business owners also own the politicians. Therefore, the 'gubment' is more likely to "skirt the issue" rather than fine those companies (who gave them campaign money) for hiring the illegals.

Tides, calm down. I just state my opinions. I could care less if you agree with them or not. I'm certainly not shoving them down your throat. I try and state them in a mature way, without name calling or belittling. That's not always possible, but I make an attempt. People with opinions different than your own should be banned? Have you believed in such censorship your whole life or is this a new thing?

The Rev. Joe Darby, president of the Council's board of directors and pastor at Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston. "It was disturbing to see that kind of raid in America, which claims to be a welcoming country." It seems to me that good Rev. Joe Draby doesnt know what the word ILLEGAL means.Well according to Websters Dictionary "Illegal means:Not lawful,Not sanctioned by official rules, criminal, illegitmate, illicit and wrongful.Yes we are a welcoming country but a country of laws and if you are here in this country ILLEGALLY you are violating the laws of the United States Of America there for subject to arrest and our deportaion back to your home country,Now if you play by the rules and laws of this country and come legally,I say welcome to my country and I can say this is my country because i have a real SS card, pay taxes both State and Federal. So Rev.Darby get off the PC train and do whats right by standing with your country not against it.

separation of Church and State, people... remember the creed that keeps you off of the tax books and gives you authority to snub the IRS. My suggestion to you is this; if you are so worried about the consequences of the raids, regarding family left behind, etc, then start buying cots and blankets and other essentials because you're going to be stuck with them... We, the taxpayers, are tired of supporting them.

When my ancestors arrived in America (legally), they worshiped the ground they walked on. They had great respect for the flag and what it stands for. They enlisted in the military and even fought against their homeland proving their pride and respect for America. The United States did not change to accommodate their lives. There was no dialing one to speak English. They learned English and were happy to do so. The government did not make the schools require students to learn the languages of the legal immigrants. Now our schools require students to learn Spanish beginning in elementary school! Why just Spanish anyway? There are many other legal immigrants that the country doesn't bend over backwards to please. I'm tired of going to my local store and having to turn a package around three times just to find ingredients or instruction written in English.
When illegals enter our country they do so knowing they are breaking the law. They come here and many have children to try and remain in America and we end up footing the bill. The parents know they are here illegally, so to keep from breaking up families, pack up the baby's and grab the ol' ladies and send them all back to their country! Then they can work to come here legally. I'd much rather pay taxes to deport them than to support them!
As far as raiding company's by racial profiling, please. Law enforcement has reason to believe there is illegal activity going on before they decide to raid anyone. Surveillance or an anonymous tip may lead to a raid and that is not just for illegals. Drug raids are another instance and do you think those people are treated as innocent until proven guilty? You may be surprised at how many drug raids prove no criminal activity.
Did any of you read in this paper a back in October about a man on a motorcycle that was killed when an illegal immigrant ran a red light? He was a friend of mine, and yes he was wearing a helmet. The illegal of course had no drivers license and had three prior charges for operating a vehicle without a drivers license! He should have been deported after he was caught the first time but instead was charged with disregarding a traffic control device and held on a $474.00 bond. If this illegal wasn't here, my friend may still be alive today. If it had been a US citizen that ran the red light, I don't think they would have gotten off with less than a manslaughter charge.
Illegal immigrants like many have already stated, are here illegally. They should be treated as criminals and forced to return from where they came from. If they have children born here, give them the option of taking them home with them or placing them for adoption. There's no free lunch here in America for the citizens that obey the laws, why should illegals have special advantages?
Keep up the raids and sting operations. It's about time our laws are enforced!

Joe Darby has a gift for cherry picking his issues. There is an obvious need for lots of ministering within two miles of his church but that seems to escape his view.

The dynamic duo of despair. According to them any opposition to their jaded point of view is idiocy.
The site will get some relief from their redundant attacks on logic while they attend the protest.
As for Darby, this guy is nothing more than an overpaid, over rated, agitator who has been a thorn in the side of the Charleston area for decades.
