Court reprimands former prosecutor

Sorenson among 65 snared in police investigation

A former Dorchester County prosecutor who was charged after a poker house was raided in Hanahan this year has been given a public reprimand by the state Supreme Court.

Donald N. Sorenson, a one-time deputy solicitor in the 1st Judicial Circuit, was served with four arrest warrants charging him with unlawful gaming and betting on four separate occasions, according to the court. He resigned from his position helping to prosecute crimes in the circuit, which covers Dorchester, Orangeburg and Calhoun counties.

The charges were in connection with a police investigation that snared at least 65 people in what was described as an organized gambling operation in a private home.

After the charges were filed, Sorenson was accepted into a pre-trial intervention program, which he completed.

The court said Sorenson "has been thoroughly cooperative" with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel and recognizes and admits that gambling of any kind is illegal in South Carolina and that his conduct was improper.

Also, he acknowledged "that his pattern of repeated gambling violations, especially given his position as deputy solicitor, indicated an indifference to his legal obligations as a member of the Bar."

"He always consistently admitted that what he did was wrong," said his attorney, Johnny Gasser of Columbia.

Sorenson can continue to practice law.

Our Supremes are the best argument for transferring the licensing of attorneys from the Bar Association over to the Dept. of Labor and Licensing.

To me this is pretty shocking. Cooperative? Well, I guess so at that point. An attorney delibertately and knowingly breaks the law, but is given a smack on his fingers?! I'm just too old and certainly not with the times, nor will i ever choose to be!
