Saving a species

Sunday, November 9, 2008

Passionate, tenacious, an indomitable force. This is Lone Droscher-Nielsen, a former flight attendant who dedicated her life to saving orangutans. She is the pioneer and founder of the largest primate rescue project in the world, the Nyaru Menteng Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, home to 700 orphaned orangutans and counting.

With only 56,000 orangutans left in the wild, Lone and her team are in a race against time to save and protect this delicate species from extinction.

Oscar-nominated actress Virginia Madsen lends her voice to this story with the premiere of "Orangutan Island: Cheating Extinction."

The one-hour special, premiering at 7 p.m. today on Animal Planet, follows Lone and her team as they embark on a rescue, rehabilitate and teach survival skills to orphaned orangutans, struggle to find protected lands and eventually release these spectacular animals into their natural habitat.
