Construction continues on Seabrook Island Club center

SEABROOK ISLAND - At the southern tip of Seabrook Island, the refreshing ocean breeze mixes with the earthy scent of dirt and the background noise of progress.

Construction workers are putting together a frame for the Seabrook Island Club's amenities center. The facility is part of a $20 million capital improvement plan designed to bring the upscale island's aging facilities up to speed by replacing an outdated conference center.

The improvements are long overdue, said club leaders, who a few years ago put together a plan that was to be funded with real estate profits, which were swelling at the time.

But given the changing economic tides, some property owners in this gated seaside community are starting to questioning how the club will pay for improvements that were budgeted when the housing market was climbing. They've voiced their concerns in an online forum, with some worrying that part of the financial burden will be shifted to owners who don't even belong to the club.

Priscilla Jones, a Mount Pleasant resident who rents out her Seabrook Island cottage, is among those who are worried. "We've been accused of not having the best interest of Seabrook at heart, but it's to the contrary," Jones said. "We all love it here, but we don't want the club to price us out of here when we didn't have anything to do with (the club)."
