LUNCH COUNTER
Gilroy's Pizza
Gilroy's downtown has filled the tummies of the after-hours set for years with plenty of pizza and monster calzones.
On Camp Road in James Island, Gilroy's has done the same — for a different sort of crowd. This time it's with similar fare and a terrific meal deal. Get any calzone, sub, small pizza (one topping), 10 wings, or salad and drink for only $6, tax included.
The food is fine, nothing extraordinary, but it makes for an easy lunch with friends. If nothing else, you won't go hungry afterward.
All calzones are $7.99, including our fave: the Deluxe with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onion and green peppers.
The subs are tremendous works, all for $6.99 each. Your best bet is the George Street, a heaping combo of grilled and marinated chicken breast, sauteed onions, green peppers, mushrooms and mozzarella cheese. But points also for the cheesesteak, made Philly-style with shaved sirloin, sauteed onions, green peppers, mushrooms and American cheese. And then the specialty pies, $8.99 for a small, $13.99 for a medium and $16.99 for a large.
The Pepperoni Powerhouse makes do with a double shot pepperoni and cheese. The Hawaiian serves up ham, pineapple and extra cheese, and the Chicken Ranch starts with a base of Ranch dressing, then piles on chicken, mushrooms, onions and green peppers.
