Deadly gunfire at mall
1 man dead, 1 injured; federal officer shoots gunman
Updated 05:44 p.m., November 6, 2008
Update: Two men in custody
Two charged in mall shooting; federal agent did not fire fatal shots
One man was killed and another was wounded in a double shooting Wednesday afternoon at the Citadel Mall.
A law enforcement officer who happened to be at the mall at the time shot one of the men, said Charles Francis, Charleston police public information officer.
The Post and Courier
Police officers inspect the scene of a double shooting Wednesday outside J.C. Penney at the Citadel Mall in West Ashley.
The gunfire began about 1:30 p.m. outside the J.C. Penney store at the West Ashley mall.
Three men walked out together, there was an altercation, and one of them shot one of the others, Francis said. He said the officer then shot the gunman.
The wounded were taken to Medical University Hospital. Begondae Moore, 27, of Goose Creek was pronounced dead there at 2:06 p.m. of multiple gunshot wounds, Charleston County Chief Deputy
Coroner Judy Koelpin said. The other man was shot in the leg, Francis said. His condition was unknown.
Francis said the officer was not injured. He was a federal agent, said Kathryn Richardson, a public information officer for the State Law Enforcement Division.
Police had two people in custody, Francis said.
Mall gunfire
SEPTEMBER 2007: An officer shoots and kills a man during a drug bust at Citadel Mall.
DECEMBER 2006: A man is shot in the foot inside the men's bathroom near the Citadel Mall food court.
AUGUST 2006: Shots are fired at a man in the Northwoods Mall parking lot but miss him and damage his car.
NOVEMBER 2004: During a drug sting at Northwoods Mall, an officer shoots a man in the chest after he fired at police.
Charleston police are investigating the first shooting, while SLED investigates the officer-involved shooting. Neither agency released any other details, and it was not clear whether Moore was shot by the agent.
Ervin Smalls, of Adams Run, is concerned because he has a 16-year-old son who works in the mall. He said he warned his son to be cautious.
Kathleen Franklin found a remote spot in the mall parking lot late Wednesday afternoon to meet her son and then go to dinner. She said she avoids the areas where people congregate outside.
"This is why," Franklin said, referring to the shooting. "Generally, I come in the mall, get what I need and get out."
She said the mall needs additional security.
Mall officials were not available for comment, a receptionist said. Marketing Director Leigh Burnett did not return a call placed to his home.
It was the third shooting incident at the Sam Rittenberg Boulevard mall in recent years.
In September 2007, a Charleston police officer shot and killed a man during an afternoon drug bust in the parking lot.
An undercover officer was making a drug buy about 2 p.m., and when police tried to arrest the suspect, he took off and tried to run them over. At that point, a police officer shot and killed the driver, 26-year-old Jeroid Ferguson.
Holiday shoppers scattered at the sound of gunfire near the Food Court in December 2006. The shooting started about 7 p.m. in the men's bathroom, where a man was shot in the foot and ran outside.

Does anyone care about the safety of the law abiding citizens anymore? It seems as though the stores would have a great interest in the safety of the folks shopping, but all they see is the bottom line of how much profit they are making. Well I am sure their profit will go further down.

SCnative, who said they were black? Some Black people hate white people for the same reason white people hate blacks. Just because they are black or just because they are white. Maybe some parents are teaching hate at home the same way white people teach hate at home(like the KKK)except the KKK kill blacks. Why don;t the KKK just kill whites who like blacks instead?

tcm3412...Do you have any personal knowledge of anyone from the KKK killing Blacks? If so, I urge you to report it to law enforcement authorities immediately! If not, perhaps you shouldn't be making such inflamatory accusations because they make you look just as bad as the others who assumed these were Blacks or on welfare. If you are a proud, intelligent Black man or woman you will not succumb to such race-baiting tactics.

The right to bear arms applies for all law abiding citizens. These people at the mall broke tons of laws. I also have the right to drive my car but if I drove it through the mall entrance at a high rate of speed and ran over a bunch of people - I'd be breaking the law

I never go to the Citadel Mall and the only time I go to Northwoods Mall is to walk in to the tool department at Sears, buy what I need, and then leave through the same door. Both malls are dangerous. If people stop going they will either increase security or go our of business. WE hold the key to fixing this particular problem.

Mall security is a joke!! Well scnative, what were they to do? I was in the mall parking lot when this went down. Last time I checked they are not psychic and did not know there was going to be a shooting in the parking lot during broad daylight. If they had known, I wish they would have told have told me because I could have done without all the drama.
I commend the police for being on the spot soo fast. There were two officers that were right behind the two running away. There were also many in cars, etc within minutes.
scnative - there is so much that I would like to say about your comment. I would like to invite you to lunch or coffee, my treat, to discuss your questions.

I haven't been inside either of the malls around here in years. For one, both of them are extremely dated and need complete overhauls. I do not feel safe going to either one and it's incidents like these that just reinforce why. Too bad for them because I love to shop, but if they can't provide me with a safe comfortable environment then I take my business elsewhere.

The problem with Citadel Mall is that it has a huge image problem. For some reason, this mall's owners have done little if anything to try to attract merchants that reflect the entire demographic of the West Ashley area. Stores that were once cutting edge, moderately upscale and new to Charleston have all vacated the property leaving behind in their wake a peculiar mix of tenants that really aren't appealing to anyone and are certainly not a major draw.
When almost every resident of West Ashley that you talk to says that they avoid the place like the plague and instead shop at Mt. Pleasant Towne Centre or downtown on King Street, that should be a fairly good indicator that the mall's owners have most definitely missed their mark.
If Citadel Mall looked like a mall of the 2000's and had stores like Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, Brooks Brothers and the like - perhaps they'd get the support of the West Ashley community. With its present day tenant mix of junk stores and its run down and blighted exterior, who wants to shop here?
Let's hope that CBL & Associates (the mall's owners) will FINALLY turn this sad situation around and add some excitement to this otherwise dreadful property. It has great potential - if they would only do something to it to improve it!

Reflect the West Ashley community? Don't you think that it does right now. I don't know what West Ashley you live in but it is a collection of junk stores and blighted exterior, just like their mall. West Ashley can't even sustain a movie theater. This mall will close in a few years.

Citadel Mall has indeed turned into a sad little place. I don't quite understand it. I've been to other cities and visited malls owned by the same company who owns Citadel Mall. All of their malls are so modern and nice. Citadel Mall looks horrible. There is trash strewn all down Orleans Road next to the bus stop. One of the Bradford pear trees next to the bus stop snapped in two and was left on the lawn for days - and never replaced. All of the grass along Orleans Road has gone to dirt where people waiting for CARTA have trampled it dead.
The brick on the outside of the mall is mildewed and peeling. The parking lot lines have faded so badly that you can barely see them. There is gum all over the sidewalks and nary a tree in the parking lot. Just acres and acres of old, deteriorating asphalt.
The inside, while it did get a facelift a few years back is dirty and smells. Most of the individual stores are gone. No wonder this mall is a magnet for crime. Certainly there is nothing here that would draw anyone to come stay and shop for a while. It's obvious that both Belk and Dillard's have downgraded their stores since they originally opened, and poor JCPenney's ill fated decision to return to a mall where they already failed one time probably wasn't the smartest idea as their empty parking is likely indicative of their popularity.
Had the mall tried to attract Macy's, and then totally gutted the exterior to make it more modern and attractive (new entrances, signage, stucco over the decaying bricks) and also possibly tried to attract some much needed chain restaurants that are currently missing in West Ashley - Citadel could have been a popular and thriving place.
It's so sad to see what it's become. If the mall's owner isn't going to do anything to improve the situation, they just need to go on and tear it down because West Ashley residents have long withdrawn their support from the mall, with the possible exception of Target. Now with this happening, I'm really even afraid to go there!

you people are scum just like these losers

are you people frigging stupid no innocent by standers were harmed just the morons involved. my husband works in this mall and still feels safe as does his manager
this wasnt the malls fault this was three idiots who got into a fight most likely over a woman or drugs.
you cant blame the mall for the stupid crap that the people who come into it.
violence can happen any where on any day. get over it. seriously your letting an isolated incident control your life thats stupid go out to the malls go shopping this has nothing to do with the mall it just happened in the parking lot.
also theres a police substation in the mall at the entrance in between sears and jcpenneys. i frequent this mall weekly and know security well. they arent responsible for the parking lot. thats the city polices job. they are responsible for what goes on inside the mall. would you rather mall security inside walking back and forth preventing shop lifting and your stuff from getting stolen or outside running crowds away
this is unfortunate but totally random.
you live in charleston get over it seriously. the whole place is going down. live in fear and the criminals win get up go out and continue living. the day we roll over and stop going out of our homes and fight for our city is the day it dies. also a random shooting can kill you while you sit on your so called safe sofa with your precious laptop
if its your time your gonna die never let fear run your life
the mall is safe
now to the guy who had a car for sale on mall property
they were within their rights to tell you to move it you cant sell anything on property you dont own without prior consent
also dicks sporting goods isnt part of the mall hence the reason the mall office did nothing
dicks is its own store on its own property

the bus stop is on city property for starters
trash is emptied once daily at 10pm at night
the tree was removed as soon as the rains ended it didnt sit there for days it was there for a day
as i said my husband works there
the tree was struck by lightening the grass cant grow because of the high volume of people on that stop. that stop can at some points in the day have 60 people waiting in the buses
the trash on orleans road isnt the malls its the residents by the mall
you cant blame the mall for the crap the people in the neighborhood does
citadel mall did try to get macys but lost out on it
west ashley residents havent given up on it dont generalize us all.
the mall is constantly being repaired inside and out. but its very expensive. instead of complaining go out to the mall show it some support and shop there without revenue coming in it cant upgrade and make repairs
i still support the mall and i always will

I have not been to that mall is several years. At one time, it was a very sophisticated place to shop. Northwood's was still a small mall did not have that big addition added.
The last time I went to citadel mall I was so disappointed by it. It almost looks well like a hangout for thugs. In addition, that was a few years ago.
I f I do shop. I go to the mall in Hilton head or Columbia.
You are right it is not the Malls fault. However, as others say clean up the place and bring better clients in, you may see a big change.JMO

In response to the post from charlestonscman above, might I suggest that you peruse the article from a 2004 edition of the Post & Courier which can be found online at http://archives.postandcourier.com/ar... quite interesting.
As noted in this article, the section of Ashley River Road in West Ashley from Bee's Ferry Road north to the Dorchester County line is the most affluent in Charleston and the 3rd most affluent in the state. There is tremendous buying power in West Ashley - these persons just shop elsewhere.
I wholeheartedly agree that the area surrounding the mall is most definitely blighted, but I don't think that this is true for all of West Ashley. The majority of the commercial areas throughout the entire tri-county are all quite unattractive if you ask me. Most often Rivers Avenue and Savannah Highway are mentioned as being the most unattractive and over commercialized; however portions of Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant and portions of Coleman Boulevard are also VERY unsightly, as are area of Folly Road on James Island and portions of the main thoroughfares in Summerville. No area of town seems to escape it or be immune, unfortunately.

Just a quick question.....Do you really believe that a exterior as well as interior makeover of the building and the tenants that chose to have a store there will fix the problem? WOW, that's sort of like putting a band aid over a severed limb. Not that I have the solution as to what should be done to quell the violence that seems to be engulfing us at every turn, but I'm pretty sure its not renovation of a mall. Possibly harsher sentences for criminals, judges with the gonads to sentence the max and then stand by it, a parol board that doesn't have bleeding hearts, moral values taught in the home, religion in schools? These might be a start. GOD, COUNTRY, HONOR?? Where did these values go?

here's another question why are there more than one 'Foot lockers' in the mall? You can literally throw a stone from one and hit the other!! Seriously, how different can one set of overpriced sneakers be from another set sold by the same company.....and here's a law that should be passed...if you are on welfare you should be banned from buying expensive clothes and shoes..after all it's coming directly from my inmcome tax, and I don't buy that stuff for myself.

you want the mall upgraded and fixed start shopping there. places need money coming in in order t do repairs
each store company owner is responsible for the store. rents are very cheap as well also the stores there are based on the people who shop there
like all the black people style clothing. you cant put a high end store like you would see on upper king street in any mall and expect to sell prada louis voton and gucci
it wont sell. the goods for sale have to be priced in away to draw attention and be sold. cant sell high end merchandise in a low income section of town gotta meet the needs of your main shopper demographic

toddb, while the link didn't work I do not doubt the 'purchasing power' West Ashley in the one corner that you are talking about. 3rd most affluent in the state I find laughable. That section also has crappy roads (61 traffic is the worst in Charleston) and is extremely dated.
If they do have money they must not spend it on anything nice. Other than Red Orchid, name a decent restuarant West Ashley. There are none. The area is a blight of chains. Stores and restuarants evaluate the demographics and you end up with what you are.
As to your other comment, I do agree about other areas in the tri-county region. The major shopping areas are very very dated.
The only nice grocery store was Publix at the Northbridge. At least now you are getting a Harris Teeter on Savannah Highway.

Thanks to jca for clarification on the garbage strewn along Orleans Road and the downed tree. When the Richard A. Jacobs Group owned this mall, they replaced the trees with new ones when they were damaged and also picked up the trash along Orleans Road. If CARTA is responsible for picking up the trash, then my apologies for suggesting that CBL & Associates should take care of this. The city ordinance does plainly state however that the property owner IS responsible for the upkeep of the public right of way, so technically CBL is responsible. Check with the City of Charleston - they'll be happy to confirm this.
Coastal Grand in Myrtle Beach is a new mall owned by CBL. It's quite modern and very attractive. All I was attempting to communicate is that CBL has the same opportunity here to do something great with Citadel Mall along these lines. I certainly meant no disrespect to jca's husband. I'm sure that he works hard to keep up the mall. It just really needs new stores and a new image.
Citadel Mall can't help that crime ends up on its doorstep. It's everywhere. They aren't doing anything to draw it in. Just wish that they'd have some nicer stores that would be more appealing to a broader cross-section of the community.
Thank you.

wont happen now until after the holidays. its very hard to keep the mall looking good when the people(not one race or people either) have no respect. i have seen people of all races spit on the floor throw cups on the floor and even watched a woman pee into a plant down near jcpenneys.
the mall recently did upgrades and took out the play area. this stuff even happens in nice pretty new malls i saw this same stuff up in washington dc at HUGE 3 STORY MALL. cbl is working on plans for upgrades for the walk ways and exterior. but it costs money. money they cant make if people avoid a mall because of one shooting

Oh my gosh, don't even get me started on Citadel Mall. I stopped going there by myself because I can't even make it to the entrance door without some wannabe thug approaching me saying, "Ay shorty, can I holla at chu? What cho name is?" hahaha! I mean seriously, there is a group of these guys that just hang out at the entrance to the food court waiting for some pretty young thing (PYT) to walk up and their goal is to collect as many phone numbers as they can. I mean sheese! I feel like I'm at the friggin' fair when the people at the midway shout at you when you're walking by.
The last time I went to the Citadel mall with my BF, we left the mall when it was dark and he said, "Baby, let's hurry up! Get in the car and lock the doors!"
Northwoods is starting to go downhill, too. Sad.
They had a 'confrontation'? So that's reason enough to pull out a gun and shoot somebody? "Ay man you checkin' out my girl??"
"Who you staring at, son? You got an eye problem? I'll fix that"
POW!!
Come on. Then the rapper 50 Cent has to make getting shot look all cool and hard. He always brags about, "I got shot 9 times! I got shot 9 times!"
So I guess you've "made it" in the hip-hop scene if you've got shot. Whatever!

Hmmm... I'm failing to see the logic in these statements. I guess we are "clueless" and "scum".
I will continue to stay away from the mall and its dangerous environment. I'm not interested in shopping where the security guards constantly have to unlock their holsters while dealing with upset people. It may not be the mall's fault that it is dangerous, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous.
Quite honestly, it's been about 6 or 7 years before I ventured in to Citadel Mall. My wife and I drove out there, walked around the entire mall and didn't find a store that we were interested in entering. It was, at the time, a bunch of odd ball stuff.

Very true charlestonscman about the lack of restaurants in West Ashley. I guess the "decision makers" think we don't eat over here! Everything out Hwy. 61 isn't all old and crappy though. Yes, Hwy. 61 needs help, but it's not all bad.
Glad to hear from jca that CBL does have plans in place for upgrades. It's not the mall merchants' fault that these thugs have to come in and ruin it for everyone. It's a shame for the merchants and shoppers.
I think the key is everyone working together to make it better. The mall, the merchants, the shoppers and the city. I know of a mall in another area that was in a similar predicament - getting older, etc. The owners came in and added parking decks and built a wing of new restaurants and specialty shops. That place came back like you wouldn't believe and is now vibrant and re-energized.
The one factor that Citadel has going for it is convenience. The location is easily accessible and very centralized. With a creative mix of renovations and an infusion of some new life with the right stores and restaurants, it can once again become vibrant.
It's just a no brainer that if a place is attractive, clean and aesthetically pleasing with something unique to offer - people will come. I hope for nothing but the best for Citadel Mall in the future and would like nothing more than to see it prosper.

Just as an FYI to the comment about the trash around the bus stop. There is a person from the City, someone from the mall, and myself the contractor for CARTA that works hard to keep the area clean and the trash picked up. I was there cleaning when the shooting took place and had to run when the two guys came running in our direction. Please believe that those of us that are tasked with cleaning the area take it pride in trying to keep the are clean. There is not much that we can do about litterbugs that are even so bold to throw trash on the ground as I'm working.

JCA, I have to agree with geekboy. If you want to start out by insulting people about being morons and being clueless, you aren't going to get far convincing anybody. You may be right in some of your comments, as you obviously have more contact with the mall than most of us do. The mall is probably getting a bad rap because of some young punks that hang out there.
Also, my 8-year-old knows more about punctuation and spelling than you do. Take a few moments to edit your comments.

OK, memory lane time. Citadel Mall must have opened right around 1980 or so? Being from quiet little Mt P, it was THE place to get your parents to take you in the early 80's. Spencer's, a video arcade (Aladdin's Castle, yes I remember the name), a movie theater, a toy store, the record shop (to buy cassettes), the food court, etc.
I remember thinking the fountain in the middle was so high end and fancy.
I haven't been there in a long time, maybe 7 or 8 years, though. Too far to drive when Mt Plastic has so much crap to buy if you want it.

the mall cant afford expensive upgrades if it has no shoppers. remember people progress and change cost money. money this mall loses when people let one random isolated shooting scare them
fear cant control our lives
if it did i wouldnt leave my home.
yesterday they found a man stabbed in the chest at the gate to west ashley park. i live beside that gate. well in those apartments. does that scare me hell no. i grew up off of remount road. back in the 80s it wasnt so bad. now its terrible

One of the reasons I don't go to the mall anymore. If I need clothing I either go to King Street on a Sunday afternoon or I order on-line and have it shipped to my house.
I remember when I was a kid and living in Turkey we were at a mall with some friends of ours. Their kids wanted to go to the arcade so they told their parents and then left. My mom freaked out at me going with them since we were by ourselves, but they had to explain to her that it was perfectly safe. Over there, you didn't have to worry about where your kids were. You didn't worry about someone trying to rob you in the parking lot. There was no crime.
Why do we allow things like this to happen?

Thank you to the gentleman who keeps the area around the bus stop clean. We should put the blame here where it lies - on the litterbugs who are inconsiderate and persist on throwing the garbage all over the place here. I'm sure that was a very frightening experience yesterday having to take cover while the shooting was going on! Yikes.
I think the problem with the bus stop is that it's proven TOO popular. Maybe need a few more benches and trash cans and enlarge the concrete pad so that the people waiting for the bus won't continue to kill the grass. Of course this isn't really the mall's responsibility. Perhaps a joint effort between CARTA and the city?
Thanks again for trying to keep this area clean. It is much appreciated!

the problem with the bus stop is too many buses at one time. many of the drivers are nasty. last Saturday i watched one walk off a bus go over to that tall tree whip it out and started urinating on the tree. i called carta gave them the bus name and number. im sure nothing was done about it.
you cant blame the mall itself for what the people who come in it do. its not fair to the stores and its employees. remember those employees have spouses and kids of their own to feed. most arent high school kids

_________________________________________________________
I'm sorry Granny, I just read the article again. Can you point out where it says that these people were on Medicaid. And being that they're young, I would doubt that Viagra is an issue for them.
Now, back on subject. I go to Citadel mall, but mostly for Target. Though, I must admit, some of the people that frequent the mall are sketchy, to say the least. The biggest thing that worries me about this whole situation is the fact the this happened when they were leaving the mall. Which means the gun was inside the mall for who knows how long and this altercation could have easily taken place inside. Innocent bystanders could have been injured or worse.

I will respectfully have to disagree with you on that one. As the mother of a four year old, I do have to dwell on the could have happened as well. I get your push for people to not live in fear, but honestly, we can't live with our heads in the cloud either. People do carry concealed weapons all the time, it's the ones illegally carrying concealed weapons that bothers me. I'm not going to stop going to the mall because of the "what could have happened," however; it does force me to look at the situation a little differently and to be mindful to be aware of my surroundings at all times. I don't only mean the mall though. The same could be said for anywhere else in the world nowadays.
But the way the article reads it sounds like when they were walking out of the mall, they got into an altercation. I could be wrong, just trying to take the article for what it seems to be saying.

Why isn't everyone thrilled? The bad guys got shot, the survivors will probably get years of time in prison and a loyal public servant armed with a weapon saved the day before anyone who wasn't involved got hurt. It's a right wing fairy tale with a happy ending. The NRA will undoubtedly use this as an example of how great it is that someone was armed with a pistol in their magazine next month.
Low wages, guns, a culture of violence and authoritarian approaches to community produced the result everyone predicts. Conservatives can blame the people who ended up being hurt and if you're lucky, get a carry permit so you too can take guns to the mall. It's Republican paradise.
I'm a tree hugging, left wing liberal lawyer. I don't think we can shoot, lock up and tax cut our way back to a higher quality of life for the Lowcountry. I couldn't get elected dog catcher.
I don't think I'll be going to the mall either. They're all depressing. Whatever we really need as a community can't be found there. My family devotes our holidays to music, theater, cooking and singing now. It's cheaper, less stressful and more fun. The shopping was so depressing.
Conservatives tell me local liberals should just pack up and leave. I'm beginning to think they're right.

jca, Not exactly. Charleston has a very good selection of high-end stores considering we're not a very big city. True, a lot is from tourists, but there are quite a few in the metro area who are well off.
With Banana Republic it's all about watching for the sales they have. The dress shirts I get from there normally run between $80-$125 at full price. I've gotten them at the end of season sales for as low as $20. If you watch the prices on-line you can get some great deals.

I see your point jca about the mall needing funding to make improvements. I understand when someone said it was like using a bandaid. But in my experience if an establishment is updated, more upscale and well kept, unsavory characters tend to either behave or stay away. People will (in general) behave according to their surroundings. If you are say at a bar or with your buddies, you may behave differently than in church or visiting your Grandma. When I briefly lived in VA they had a great mall. It wasn't in an upscale area either. The high quality stores attracted higher end customers. They had Nordstroms,Abercrombie, Banana Republic,Coach,BeBe,Eddie Bauer,Johnston & Murphy,Godiva.... I could go on and on. The mall security there was AMAZING! I saw a guard ID a group of young girls to make sure at least one was 18 or over. They were under 18 and escorted out! I long for an upscale mall here. We are way behind the times on this one.
Oh BTW- my mall pet peeve is the unattended kids by the rides begging for money. No parents in sight.

jca, What's really sad is when the parents are with them. I don't understand how any parent could let their child dress like that. To me that's almost a form of abuse.

Someone mentioned earlier about West Ashley not even being able to attract a cinema. Wrong again! The Citadel Mall Cinema has been razed and is being replaced with a 16-screen cinema with IMAX capabilities. At least we're getting something decent.

I'm sorry if I wasnt clear Granny. The wouldnt allow UNATTENDED youths under the age of 18. In other words parents couldnt just dump their annoying kids/wanna be thugs off at the mall. They would allow a group of kids as long as one was at least 18 yrs old. So someone was held responsible. It was awesome! I wouldve hated it as a teen-LOL But times were different then. We knew to behave.

It would be nice to go to any store and do not have to be around kids that do not behave. Even in good old Wal-Mart, the parents come in and the kids scatter and I am talking kids 9, 10 and you see them in the toy dept the toys are all over the floor or you have them riding in the handicap carts. Or riding the bikes in the aisles
However, to get back to troublemakers is the malls you have them in other stores as well hanging out. some of our grocery stores have benches to sit on and late in the evening when you go there the kids are out there and they are yelling or (and I know this for fact) smoking dope with the people who working at the stores.
In addition, yes I do what know what it smells like. eww

That was the time jca when kids had respect for adults. You would fear(stranger or not) that someone would tell your Momma or Daddy if you acted up. I was raised being told to say yes ma'am and yes sir. If called and I dared yell what instead of ma'am...I'd be told "Don't "what" me, get in here" LOL I was told before leaving the house to "know where you came from". I tell my kids the same thing. Be respectful, mind your manners, know where you came from and I remind them their behavior is a reflection of my parenting. Boy....those were the days.

This is for you JCA and everyone else who has placed judgment on Begondae Moore. I feel so sorry for your children. This was a man who served in the United States Air Force and has friends all over the world. He was funny and smart and would do anything for his friends and family.
How dare you speak about someone you know nothing about? I'm sure it was very hard for his fiance to go to the morgue last night to identify his body. Have you people no remorse or empathy for his family and friends.
Something has to be said about these racist, judgmental, ignorant pigs that have the audacity to call him a loser. He was murdered in broad day light while leaving the mall. He was 27 years old and luckily no children. His mother passed away recently and his fiance who is stationed there has to pick up the pieces and explained to his remaining family he's been murdered.
JCA you're probably some fat, lonely, uneducated, bitter, miserable woman who sits at home waiting for your husband to come home from his long hours at the mall where he checks out beautiful, young, thin women all day dreading closing time. Get a life lady!
You must all still be upset about Obama being elected president. President can change this country but he'll never be able to change the minds and hearts of people like you. God Bless you all.
R.I.P. Begondae "Moe" Moore:you will be missed.

jca, I miss the way retailing was done in Turkey. We had a mens clothing store over there that carried all kinds of nice things. When you went in you would sit down in a lounge area. In the winter you could sit next to a fireplace. They had a coffee table with the catalogs for all the major designers. The first thing they would do is bring out refreshments. Pepsi, hot tea, beer or wine was served. They'd also bring out pistachios. Next you would go through the catalogs and select what you wanted. They would make a few phone calls and quote you a price. You paid 1/2 up front, and 1/2 when your items came in.
The way they did it was to call the textile mills and place an order. What you were getting wasn't knock-offs either. It was the real thing since the clothing designers will foetn have items manufactured overseas. The textile mills would operate to capacity and compete on the export market. Anything that didn't get sold overseas was sold at home, and often sold at cost since the mill would pay taxes on the amount of inventory left at the end of the year.
The same Ralph Lauren oxford shirt or Lacoste polo shirt that would run $100 or more here could be bought there for $10. The stores were clean, the employees all well dressed, and the places usually had marble flooring. Relaxing music was often played and people made their children behave. People overseas are often horrified when they come here and see how parents let their kids misbehave.

To all: Please dont allow yourself to think that this was an isolated incident that happened only at Citadel Mall. And please dont think that it wouldnt happen at Northwooods. Hate to do this but West Ashley is a whole lot better to live than North Chas. I live in a 250-450 area in north chas now but Im from west ashley. Cant wait to get back. When I tell people I live in North Chas only thing they think of is the Ghetto. WOW!!
granny-All both malls are is a place for these young bad kids to hang out so your right there is no need to even bother shopping there. White, Black, Asian, mixed (like your your great granddaughter). Im a youg black male and the kids drive ME crazy too. My daughter is a teenager and she is not allowed to go in the mall alone. Im not overprorected I just see for my own eyes what goes on there. And the clothing is unbelieable. All of these kids sag their damn pants. It ridiculous. saggin knows no one race either. I was like WOW when I saw the young white kids doing it (They scare me more than the black kids cause I can at least relate to the young black kids but the white kids that sag scare ME).
And northwoods mall is defintely worse. The kids hang outside at all times . Evrrytime I take my daughter there is a security car and officers outside everytime. Parents need to be held accountable (all parents ).

No turdblossom, I think the answer may be in improving education...and we need to begin by getting rid of inept teachers like Teach7775 appears to be. I'm very glad that my children didn't have someone like that teaching them racial hatred when they were in school! At the very least Teach is living in the past...I've not seen the KKK stringing up Blacks lately, has anyone else??? Yet that is exactly what Teach is implying (and probably teaching our young, impressionable youth). Is it any wonder that our Black children grow up hating or fearing whites??

I must correct you on a point you made about Dick's Sporting Goods not being a part of the mall. The very same link you provided to Citadel Mall's web page lists Dick's among its stores. I doubt they would do that if Dick's isn't "part of the mall," as you say.

In answer to jca's question about the new cinema, it's scheduled to open in June 2009 on the site of the former cinema. It's owned by Southeast Cinemas of Charlotte. You can check out their website for confirmation.
Hopefully the new cinema will be the start of some positive improvements for Citadel Mall. It sounds as if it's going to be really nice (leather, stadium-style seating, a bistro cafe, IMAX capabilities, Dolby, etc.)
It would go nicely with a new anchor tenant (Macy's, Nordstrom, are you listening??)

The least anyone can do upon reading this article is wish Begondae Moore's loved ones strength to grow past their personal tragedy.
For the people leaving such disrespectful comments; I should certainly hope if your friend or relative is murdered, others refrain from gloating about what stores are good and what needs fixing-up at his/her murder spot.

If one positive thing is to come from this unfortunate incident at Citadel Mall, let's hope that 2009 will bring some much needed changes at this center and that its owners CBL Properties will consider making some improvements and additions to make the mall more "family friendly" and once again a great place to shop! It's so sad to see the many vacancies here. Hopefully some much needed physical improvements are on the way which will stimulate growth and a revival of this center.
