Charleston's front porch
Obama is fond of our 'beautiful, restful' city
By Dottie Ashley , Robert Behre
Charleston has a special place in the heart of president-elect Barack Obama, as anyone who heard his victory speech Tuesday night could tell.
Provided
Michelle and Barack Obama embrace following Michelle's speech on a porch at 21 King St. in April 2007. In Obama's acceptance speech Tuesday night, he talked of the places where he had spoken. One venue was 'from the front porches of Charleston.' The home at that time belonged to Ted Dintersmith and Elizabeth Hazard, who have moved to Seattle.
"Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and on the front porches of Charleston," he told the crowd of 1 million gathered at Chicago's Grant Park and millions more watching at home.
Obama spent a warm spring day on one of Charleston's most handsome porches during a campaign stop in April 2007.
He spoke to a crowd of 1,500 at Burke High School but spent much of the day at a fundraising event at 21 King St., home of venture capitalist Ted Dintersmith and his wife Elizabeth Hazard, who had moved here from Boston.
At least 150 people paid $1,000 each to dine on shrimp, rice and green beans with Barack and Michelle Obama in the courtyard and on the piazzas of their spacious home a few blocks from The Battery.
"It was truly astonishing," said Dintersmith, reached by phone in Seattle, where he and his wife and two children now live.
"Both Michelle and Barack were so gracious, and even though Michelle had to leave right afterward to fly back to Chicago, Barack stayed around for quite a while, signing his book for people and just talking," he said. "It wasn't like when everybody left, he turned into a different persona. He was just the same as when he was in public, very low-key, very nice."
Standing on their porch, Michelle Obama gave a speech in which she marveled at the home, saying, "Talk about the White House, I think this house is pretty terrific. I'd like to come back and spend the night!"

When Obama later returned to Charleston, he spoke with Franklin Ashley, a College of Charleston professor and an early Obama supporter. He reminisced with Ashley about his first visit here, telling him, "Coming to that luncheon was a very important time for me because it was then that I thought if that many people from a place like Charleston would pay $1,000 to come have lunch with me, that I just might have a real chance to win."
He recently made known his fondness for the city again when he spoke with Mayor Joe Riley during a U.S. Conference of Mayors event in Miami.
"He was getting ready to talk to the mayors to discuss urban policies, and he said, 'You know Joe, I really love Charleston. It's such a beautiful and restful place. I look forward to coming back,' " Riley recalled.
Phil Noble, a member of the Obama statewide steering committee and president of the South Carolina New Democrats, said when Obama made his first stop in South Carolina — for a January 2007 rally in Columbia — he briefed Obama about South Carolina's political and cultural history. He gave Obama a Palmetto State tie.
"I also told him our state motto was: 'While I breathe, I hope,' " Noble said. "Barack's eyes lit up and he said, "Hey, I think I can use that some time.' "
Noble said he had been puzzled that Obama didn't make more use of it during his primary campaign here, but he heard it Tuesday night.
"This is our moment," Obama said. "This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes we can."
David Agnew, a Charleston businessman who joined Obama's campaign early on, said that fundraising event on the Dintersmiths' porch proved to be a metaphor for Obama's campaign.
"There were blacks, whites, Republicans, Democrats and undecideds," Agnew said, "but most of all, after hearing Barack's and Michelle's speeches, all of them were fired up and totally ready to go."

A place like Charleston? Who are you calling "you people"!? Haha, joking. If I was a professional offence taker, I would be bothered by this line.
I also caught the 'Dum Spiro, Spero' line in his speech and, in addition to the Charleston reference, wondered whay SC got so much attention since we notably DIDN'T vote for him.

I am pretty split on the Obama presidency, as my grand daddy would say "We'll see come Sunday".
Which means after he did some serious praying but not unitl he did a lot of thinking, watcthing and soul searching.

I realize we are in an era of hope and change but I'm not going to change my views for the sake of national unity. When I see something wrong, I will use my first amendment rights. I realize the liberal/socialist like to control information and free speech but Karl Marx was not one of those ideologues that influenced our founding fathers.

OH, PLEASE Spankerbuns - The State of South Carolina voted Republican by the same landslide margin that your bubba won in America. But then like a good little Socialist you feel the urge to continue the Liberal lie. A lot of Democrat Party welfare slaves living in Charleston County are in for a rude surprise.
I tell you what, go stand in the corner and hold your breath, and wait for all the money promised by your bubba.

Riptide-When you see something wrong you should speak up! Whatever difference you may have with the new administration, you have the right to speak up, just as you have the right to counsel in a criminal case, the right not to incriminate yourself, protection against unreasonable search and seizure and the right to Due Process of law, among others.
Unlike the present administration that wiretapped Americans without warrants, among other violations, the new administration, as you suggest, should be more vigilant in adherence to Constitutional protections.
I will also speak up when I disagree with the new administration and I am pleasantly surprised that you and I stand together on the need to constantly guard the many constitutional protections we Americans enjoy.

Cid95, you may recall not the general election but the primary way back in time. South Carolina chose Barack and John as the best candidates for their respective parties... thus setting a tone for the rest of the South and the nation in general. I doubt that either of them will forget that.
Notafan, while you lament the difficulty in making mortgage payments and filling up the tank, I can't help but notice the person running the country is from the GOP. When gas rallied up to $4/gallon... it was the same deal. By some shoddy logic, you look at the hard facts and assert that the Republican party that led the country face-first into this mess still deserves the same credit to try again.
I love Big Mac, but George Bush beat John McCain out of the white house for the second time. If he had been, I dunno, a little more fiscally conservative instead of building debt like a drunk coed with a MasterCard, perhaps folks would still trust the GOP to live up to its promises. We now have four years to figure out whether the Dems can do any better.

The nation has spoken and has elected Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America. It doesn't matter if you agree with the decision or not the reality is the decision has been made. He will be the reigning president for the next 4 years. For those who chose to hatefully not acknowledge this man as your president he will rule this country with or without your support. How can you consider yourselves Americans if you don't support your President. Now that's unpatriotic!!!!

South Carolina should take advantage of the high regard our next President has for the people here. Following the Republicans down the right wing rabbit hole won't bring jobs or investment to our area. I've returned from Pensacola, FL where I joined 6000 out of state attorney's for the election as well as an even larger group of Florida attorneys. If people don't believe Obama believes in work, you've never worked for an organization he leads. Results, discipline, communication, initiative, the Obama army of 200 thousand people in Florida never let up.
I also got a close up view of what happens to conservative coastal communities that place their whole bet on retirement, tourism and real estate development. We don't want to end up like the Florida coast. Tax base is declining, many of the good jobs are gone, a large aging population is running out of money while it's needs increase, talent flees, services get cut, libraries, parks and community centers are closed and the cops get violent. Kids leave and don't come back. Even the Republicans told me they were in a lot of trouble.
It's a clear warning. We're ten years behind them. We had better make some adjustments.

Well I don't have a problem wire tapping an enemy agent and since I haven't seen any lawsuits or violations of wire tapping on the any American citizens then I just see that as a liberal anti-Bush talking point.. Don't get me wrong, I don't any problems of people being anti-Bush. I'm against Bush on a lot of things but I'm more anti-liberal than anything else.
Barack's first priority is to put extreme limits on information. No doubt he and the liberal congress will initiate legislation to minimize the influence on talk radio. The Fairness Doctrine or possibly some other similar form of legislation. Fox news is troublesome and they may past legislation to regulate the cable channels to put Fox News on the most expensive premium channel possible. Then the internet will be next. There are a lot of creative ways to put limits on freedom without abolishing freedom completely.
The redistribution of wealth is the next priority. The 401k retirement plans is now on the radar screen. This is a huge amount of wealth that can be placed into the failing social security system. I'm not sure if they can do this but after watching at the illegal alien issue, I got a feeling they can do anything. Raising our taxes and increasing government spending will be next.
The list can go on and on and on. I'm sure most liberals will put a happy face on this index of misery and at times they will agree to disagree. My main point is that the government has no right to take my money or place limits on my freedom and liberties.
I will keep excersizing my rights until it comes to an end. You have a nice day.

Shoestring,
I agree that it's wrong for anyone to vote for a person by the color of their skin only and not by their qualifications BUT the 43 presidents prior have been white, so are you saying that because a different color person who was in postiton for the highest job would be an automatic vote for?
It would appear that the majority of folks who voted for President Obama saw his color, understood his educational background (#1 in his class at Havard Law School), his skills, and qualifications and his unwavering ability to control the negativity from the "Right". I demand that my President shall be smarter than me and my wife. President Obama is! Does he represent a far more diverse group of Americans, Yes! Will he do everything correct, No? Is he the best hope of moving this country in a more positive direction than Bush, YES, YES, YES1

I voted for the best choice, in my opinion, for each position. Exactly what I think that everyone should always do. I would love to see names removed from the ballot and give on the candidate's platform. Vote on the platform so that at least you can say that you voted your beliefs.
So from what I read in your post, you vote for someone new in every position... Did you take time to research them and find out if they were qualified or capable of doing the job? I am seriously asking.... I hope you did.

msplacedinsc - Most presidents are Political Science, History, or Law School students. It is my prayer that they are not smarter than me. However, if you are happy with them being smarter than you so that you don't actually have to make any decisions for yourself, then I would say that you will always find that to true, no matter who the president is.
And remember, the student who graduates first in Law School (although I've never seen any proof that Obama graduated first) is not necessarily the smartest, but rather the one that was best at regurgitating the opinions that were feed to them by the professors. Usually the people with their own ideas don't do very well in school.

Riptide: "Well I don't have a problem wire tapping an enemy agent"
This seems to contradict your otherwise Republican viewpoints. You and I actually agree on a lot of things (believe it or not) and one of them is that the government should be small and stay out of our private lives. While I agree that the U.S. should protect its citizens as best as possible, things get blurry when you ask the question, "How do we know if this person we are wire-tapping is a true threat?" It's a slippery slope and allows the gov't to justify wire tapping (or other invasion of privacy) for any citizen. This is not a criticism, so please don't get defensive, I'm just curious how you reconcile that with you're other tenets.
Jane: I have not heard that Obama was #1 at Harvard Law, but it is public record that he was Magna Cum Laude, which is quite exceptional given the competition. I have not heard about him getting Cs at Occidental, though I doubt it given that he was able to transfer to Columbia. (New York, that is... not SC.)

Other mportant time was also invested locally in South Carolina by Obama. Let us not forget that he and the former Democratic nominee of 2004 Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts quite purposefully selected Charleston as the place that Kerry endorsed Barack Obama's candidacy prior to the Democratic primary earlier this year. This event occurred at the Cistern on the College of Charleston campus. Given Charleston's role regards this nation's race challenge, what an expected turn of events magnified by its irony. To which was added as another irony of juxtaposition, the modern Internet website of YouTube utilized as a forum from which to gather submitted questions from bloggers to primary candidates at a Democratic debate held at the Citadel, again here in one of the oldest of American cities. Obama subsequently won that primary in the first of Southern contests. This is the silver lining of our part in this historic opportunity to reject rigged elections realized and move toward the meritocracy to which the Founding Fathers aspired.

I will support him now because he is my president, but I will hope and pray every day that he is not able to accomplish all of the things that he promised during his campaign. I am not a huge fan of Bush. I liked some of his decisions early on, but to tell you the truth, I think there are a LOT of people out there smarter than him. Grades are not always proof of someone's intelligence. And since you asked, I recieved my undergrad from the Citadel, where I graduated with a 3.9 GPA in Civil and Environmental Engineering. msplacedindc: If BulldogTLC is telling the truth about his education, we certainly can't lump him in with the rest of the right-wing, religious-freak, ignorant bunch. Engineering from MIT? Quite impressive. Unlike Jane, I don't need to know his grades to know it takes brains to graduate from that program. Based on the quality of his writing, though, I have my suspicions. Then again, enginerds are not known for their writing skills...
So while we can argue about who is more intelligent, a Harvard Law grad or an MIT Engineering grad, what is not up for debate, is that Palin is barely functional. I just read this (and please note the source):
"Fox News reports that Palin didn't know Africa was a continent and did not know the member nations of the North American Free Trade Agreement -- the United States, Mexico and Canada -- when she was picked for vice president."
Even Dan Quayle is reading that going, "REALLY?!?!" Not surprising that she is an enthusiastic creationist and "abstinence only" advocate.
It's been said before: The problem is that the dumb don't know what it means to be smart because they've never been.

I didn't know Obama and Michelle were president and first lady already.
Enthusiasm overshadows accuracy once again.
I wonder were the notion that only those with a piece of paper attesting that they completed whatever program, at whatever school, somehow had the market cornered on brain power?
With all the education that you and your physician wife have acquired, it would seem that you'd be slightly suspicious of a web site that so willingly provides information (assumed to be gospel truth)about a man's academic achievements while so much about the man is kept from the prying eyes of the public.

BulldogTLC: No doubt you could out math me!
However, I take exception to your conclusion that you are smarter than Obama because of his political philosophy and ideas. (There's a whole different discussion on the definition of "smarter" for another time.)
In the most basic sense, there are two major political philosophies in this country: 1) small government, laissez-faire capitalism (Republicans - at least what we used to be) and, 2) bigger government with intervention to support those who need help and to keep business from taking advantage of the little guy (Dems). Of course, there are variations of every kind in between.
You can believe (in italics) that one philosophy is better than the other. But the reality is that history has proven that neither side has shown itself a clear winner. If history has shown us anything, it's that both philosophies have their place under certain conditions, i.e. the Dems' way after the Great Depression, and the Repubs' way in the 50s and 80s. Both can be successful under the right conditions.
So you can say that you think Obama's plans won't work, but you can't say you know because plans like his have lead to prosperity in the past. It has nothing to do with whether Obama and his ideas are intelligent and everything to do with political economic philosophy.
In this election we, unfortunately, didn't have the choice between the two major philosophies; we had a choice between big government redistributing money into the hands of the middle class and BIGGER government reditributing the money to the wealthy. I chose the former.

I seriously doubt the government would want or have the resources to listen to any of my boring conversations or that matter listen to anyone on this forum. There are sleeper cells in this country as we all found out on 911. The government has the responsibility for the security of this country and they obligation to gather intelligence on these people. I would imagine there are American citizens that hate this country too and are acting in concert with these people. There were Nazi spies and Japanese spies in this country before WWII and during the war. Again, I haven't heard of anyone getting their civil rights violated.
I ask you, how would you gather intelligence on these people? If you have the answer then pass this on to the CIA and FBI.
What scares me more than anything else is not the government but a private citizen having access to my financial records, accounts, and investments. I can deal with the bonehead that might want to break into my house, but this identity theft or having my all my accounts on some computer chip and then one day it all disappears bothers me.

President elect Obama has a very difficult job ahead of him, and it will no doubt take longer than 4 years to clean it up. He is the new leader of the free world. We need to get over it. If it was the other way around, the Obama supporters would be told the same thing. Everything that's wrong in this world will not become right overnight. He is facing the same diffcult issues as John McCain would have had he been voted into office. The election is over. The people have spoken. He has won. He reached over racial lines and pulled people together. Now let's focus on getting this country better.

I'm thinking FOX made him darker,
Girly, it could be the light maybe the camera. But I've been three inches from the man's face, as the crowd was loud and I'll tell ya FOX had him looking coal black.
Jane, no I was just looking at random screen shots and errrrr youtube. lol

Cassique, I have read the Official Declaration of Succession many times. History is one of hobbies. You are correct, slavery is mentioned in the Declaration, however the sucession was because the states rights were being infrindged upon.
"The people of the State of South Carolina, in Convention assembled, on the 26th day of April, A.D., 1852, declared that the frequent violations of the Constitution of the United States, by the Federal Government, and its encroachments upon the reserved rights of the States, fully justified this State in then withdrawing from the Federal Union"
The federal Government was making it impossible for the state to exist as sovereign as States. This is how the United States was established - as 13 individual States. Congress was formed and certain powers were delegated to the United States by the Constitution. Amendments were added stating that any power not granted to the United States and not prohibited by it, would remain within the power of the State. The "Big Government" was taking away a power that had been constitutionally granted to the State. The power that is most often mentioned is that of slavery, but slavery was not the issue. State's power was the issue.

BulldogTLC;From what I remember from studying the war years ago, one of the major issues was economic.
France and England were more than willing to purchase cotton at higher prices than the mills in New England were willing to pay.
Slavery itself was doomed to extinction with the advent of mechanization but the issue of slavery made an excellent catalyst to galvanize support for the war.
Hitler used the Jews for the same purpose.

Just what we need, further consolidation of power in the big idiot Federal Government. Forget about increasing States' rights and don't get me started on the effect of DA Federal Government on individual rights. The all powerful centralized Federal Government will become even more agressive in consuming the vitality of our country. Neither the Marxist Obama or the Socialist-lite McCain would have had any effect on the thieves that now control the levers of power in this country. Welcome your new masters, same as the old ones. Bulldog,
One of the many differences we have between you and me is that I don't give a rats-butt if the government wants to tax us more. My wife and I aren't GREEDY like you and your party advocate? We make a very comfortable living, travel two or three times a year all over the country and the world with my 6 children. We are happy each and everyday because I don't let people like you to bother my way of living? We can have whatever we want, we have very little debt cause we pay our bills off every month. So if President Obama needs me to pitch in for alittle more $, so be it, I don't care!! I am going to enjoy my life and then I going to die as well as you and all the others on this site and you won't take it with you?
So if I could pass on alittle advise to you and your party members, focus and mind your own business and stop worrying about how others live, love and work in this country and you'll be alot better off, I promise you?
It's time to go home and see how my open minded, educated childrens day went and enjoy the rest of my evening with my family even more because Obama was elected President of our great country!!

The people have spoken. Period. Let's give President elect Obama the same chances to clean things up the way we did the others who came before him. They have all made promises for change. Could it possibly get any worse than it already is? Yes, it could. Does it do any good to attack the man because he lost his train of thought for a split second one night? No, it doesn't. Let him prove himself where it counts...working hard to help all of us.

What I have a problem with is giving that move to the government to distribute to those who refuse to work. You and I will continue to disagree on this subject and I promise I am not trying to change your opinion. You are entiltled to it and I am happy for you. I hope you have a good time with your family. These racists on these boards truly make me laugh with their fear and ignorant comments.
Here's the deal and here's how a lot of these racists think: Y'all hurry up and lynch that boy, so we can get some sleep for church in the morning. Hypocrites.
This state and the South, in general, will not change. These racists will have to die out. THANK GOD that most white Americans are not racists.
I am so thankful, and THANKFUL TO GOD, that a lot of younger whites are not as hateful as most of these people. So, there is hope for this state.
This is what the IGNORANT poster "cedarpost" wrote.
So guess what? Your crack heads, your unwed mothers, your welfare cheats, drug dealers, drive by shootings, even the vast number of young black men in prison .... it's all going to be taken care of, because there is a black man in charge and he's the one ya'll need to take it up with. In short ya'll can't blame Whitey anymore!"
As always blacks are the only ones on welfare and committing crimes. They are quick to overlook the fact that even Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter is not married. And of course, they are no white drug dealers.
Many minorities (BLACK, ASIAN, MEXICAN, INDIAN, LATINO, ETC.) work hard just like whites. Many work hard and earn what they get, so, they don't get, want or need handouts.
Some ignorant rants just have to responded to, but I know I cannot dispel ignorance like that. It would be a lifetime filled with futility.

Obama campaign: Unpaid wages resolved
Lines were long and tempers flared Wednesday not to vote but to get paid for canvassing for Barack Obama. Several hundred people are still waiting to get their pay for last-minute campaigning. Police were called to the Obama campaign office on North Meridian Street downtown to control the crowd.
The line was long and the crowd was angry at times.
"I want my money today! It's my money. I want it right now!" yelled one former campaign worker.

Who Am I? (This is a good one.)
I was raised in one country but my father was born in another. I was not his only child. He fathered several children with a number of women.
I became very close to my mother because my father showed little interest in me. Then my mother died at an early age from cancer. Later in life, questions arose over my real name. My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a reliable birth certificate.
I grow up practicing one faith, but converted to Christianity because this was widely accepted in my country. But I practiced non-traditional beliefs and did not follow mainstream Christianity.
I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.
I wrote a book about my struggles growin g up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.
I became active in local politics when I was in my 30s and then burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office when I was in my 40s. I had a virtually non-existent resume, very little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker who managed to draw incredibly large crowds during my public appearances.
At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy. I was critical of my country in the last war. But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I had a plan on how we could do better. I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.
Mine was a peoples campaign. I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics and was able to gain widespread popular support. I offered the people the hope that together we could change our country and the world.
I spoke on behalf of the downtrodden including persecuted minorities such as Jews, but my actual views were not widely known until after I became my nations leader. However, anyone could have easily learned what I really believed if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with. But they did not.
Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.
Who am I? Scroll down for the answer.
Adolf Hitler
