Pearson leading in Dorchester treasurer's race
In the race for Dorchester County treasurer, incumbent Republican Mary Pearson was leading Democrat Beverly Waggoner Lucas. With 41 of 49 precincts reporting, Pearson received 60 percent of the vote to 40 percent for Lucas, according to unofficial results.
"I think the people saw that I was there doing the job and they placed their confidence in me again," Pearson said.
Gov. Mark Sanford appointed Pearson in 2006 to fill the unexpired term of former Treasurer Patsy Knight when she was elected to the state House of Representatives.
In her campaign, Pearson cited a number of accomplishments during her two years as treasurer. She said she improved service, cut costs and lobbied the Legislature to update state e-commerce laws to allow more tax paying options. Her goals include further property tax relief for seniors and retired military veterans; more online and e-payment options for paying taxes; and encouraging council to consider letting residents pay property taxes in installments.
Lucas has been with the treasurer's office for seven years. She is a deputy courier. Her father is longtime Dorchester County Councilman Kenny Waggoner, for whom the county services building is named. The campaign reportedly caused some tension in the treasurer's office. Pearson transferred Lucas to the supervision of County Administrator Jason Ward until after the election.
