Clyburn cruises to win
House Majority Whip returning to Congress
COLUMBIA — Sixth District U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn will return to Congress for a ninth term Tuesday after defeating GOP challenger Nancy Harrelson.
Clyburn, a Democrat and House Majority Whip, took 68 percent of the vote to Harrelson's 32 percent, according to early and unofficial results.
The results are based on 181 of 449 precincts reporting.
"My job is going to be to try to work hard to maintain cohesiveness in this caucus," Clyburn said.
His responsibility as House Majority Whip is to see where Democrats stand on issues before votes are taken on the floor.
He noted that Democrats picked up a number of seats Tuesday night in the U.S. House, sealing an even higher majority bloc.
Clyburn, 68, said he intends to serve out his term, in the case that Sen. Barack Obama wins the White House.
"I have absolutely no interest at all in being in this administration," Clyburn said.
The 6th Congressional District is made up of 15 counties, including several around the Interstate 95 corridor and parts of Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester.
Harrelson, 54, a political newcomer from Marion, faced a steep uphill challenge with little name recognition and virtually no campaign money.
