President-elect Barack Obama, along with his wife, Michelle, and children, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, greets the crowd at his rally in Grant Park in Chicago.

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama swept to victory as the nation's first black president Tuesday night in an electoral college landslide that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.

"Change has come," he told a huge throng of jubilant supporters in Chicago.

The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his historic triumph by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain with a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states — Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Iowa and more.

On a night for Democrats to savor, they not only elected Obama the nation's 44th president but padded their majorities in the House and Senate, and come January will control the White House and Congress for the first time since 1994.

Obama's election capped a meteoric rise, from mere state senator to president-elect in four years.

In his first speech as victor, to thousands at Grant Park in his home town of Chicago, Obama catalogued the challenges ahead. "The greatest of a lifetime," he said, "two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century."

He added, "There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face."

Obama also noted that his campaign wasn't born in Washington but in everyday places across the nation.

"I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause."

McCain called his former rival to concede defeat, and the end of his own 10-year quest for the White House. "The American people have spoken, and spoken clearly," McCain told disappointed supporters in Arizona.

President Bush added his congratulations from the White House, where his tenure runs out on Jan. 20. "May God bless whoever wins tonight," he had told dinner guests earlier.

Obama, in his speech, invoked the words of Lincoln and echoed John Kennedy.

"So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder," he said.

He and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, will take their oaths of office as president and vice president on Jan. 20.

The popular vote was relatively close, 51.3 percent to 47.5 percent with 73 percent of all U.S. precincts counted, but not the count in the Electoral College, where it mattered most.

There, Obama's audacious decision to contest McCain in states that hadn't gone Democratic in years paid rich dividends.

Obama has said his first order of presidential business will be to tackle the economy. He has also pledged to withdraw most U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months.

A survey of voters leaving polling places on Tuesday showed the economy was by far the top Election Day issue. Six in 10 voters said so, and none of the other top issues — energy, Iraq, terrorism and health care — was picked by more than one in 10.

In Washington, the Democratic leaders of Congress celebrated.

"It is not a mandate for a party or ideology but a mandate for change," said Senate Majority leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Said Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California: "Tonight the American people have called for a new direction. They have called for change in America."

Shortly after midnight in the East, The Associated Press count showed Obama with 338 electoral votes, well over the 270 needed for victory.

McCain had 141 after winning states that comprised the normal Republican base.

Interviews with voters suggested that almost six in 10 women were backing Obama nationwide, while men leaned his way by a narrow margin.

Just over half of whites supported McCain, giving him a slim advantage in a group that Bush carried overwhelmingly in 2004.

Congratulations Charleston. We should all be proud that Barack Obama says his campaign "began on the front porches of Charleston". You can be proud that Charleston supported your new President despite the narrow-mindedness of the rest of the State, and a Senator (Graham) who said he will fight Obama "Tooth and Nail".

From observation, we do know Lindsey Graham is capable of carrying John McCain's suitcase around the Country, but how else can he help our State with the new Administration with that kind of announced attitude?

We shall see!

A nation of free loaders who have been looking for hand outs since 1994 are expecting a far better free ride and the nation in 4 years probably will not be America as we have known it over the last 400 years.

The limp wrist girlie men are now in charge. Hey Spanky does mean a huge increase to your welfare check? I wonder if the Middle East is celebrating this victory this morning?

Obama's administration will have to deal with Pres. Bushes many failed policies as well as the global economic crisis & above all else a very nasty suprise which Americas ( & the wests ) many enemies intend to throw his way . We already know about Irans ambition to build the bomb & destroy Israel , Al Quedas intention to continue the global terror campaign & Oil rich & re-armed Russias ambitions in eastern europe & the baltic - Obama & his team will have great difficulty dealing correctly & forceably with these major threats - but what if the threat comes from an entirely different region? I predict that Obamas weakness ( real or perceived ) will be tested right away by the usual suspects so to speak & he will fail miserably thus paving the way for an unexpected crisis , being thrown a curve ball out of left field--Peoples Republic of China , seeing the weakness , will invade & conquer Taiwain whilst a weakend & distracted America struggles with other ongoing conflicts. This is a doom & gloom scenario but one which could easily happen & will lead to a nuclear exchange.

c-taylor:

When Obama fails or send us spiraling down even farther he and his administration will simply point their fingers at the Bush administration and lay blame elsewhere.

I am in shock that so many ignorant people voted for Obama. Let the handouts begin!!!

I work hard for my money and my husband owns his own business. I am married to "Joe the Plumber." You can bet we will be watching what happens in the coming months.

Typical NativeSon. Opening his trap before thinking about how ignorant he may sound or look. I dont know what "Native" you are claiming but here in America, we are 232 years old. That's right. Write it down. Never forget it. Americans, lets come together so we can educate, dirt bags like NativeSon on this country. "my friends", USA needed a change and we now have it. ANYTHING is better than GWB.

Go Obama!remember, this is not a Black, White, Latino whatever nationality. This election was about the American people looking for a change from the last 8 years in our beloved country. So stop judging Obama by the color of his skin and get on board. If you dont like it, HIT THE BORDER....

Peace in the middle east and I'm out!

I see the excuses are coming in for Osama’s failures already. Whom will these people blame when he fails? The white congress and senate members. This country has been a joke since they put the draft dodger in slick willy. Watch Osama appoint Hillary as a Supreme Court justice to ensure excuse makers are given immunity. Just my opinion.

Spanky you change your moniker to liberaltime!

Again, it’s always about race but not the content of his character, the issues facing this nation or his political beliefs. I don’t have any white guilt, I grew up poor and I went to school with black kids and watch some of them secede in life and some that didn’t. You assume that people on the right are racist, that’s how you keep the black community on the liberal plantation.

Since self-reliance and hard work don’t exist for people on the left it didn’t surprise me about the out come of this race. I don’t expect the Nanny state social programs paid for by the tax payers to increase the quality of life for the American people any more than the Great Society programs of LBJ. The rich and the rich liberals will move their fortunes to offshore accounts and the middle class will have the burden to pay for all these social programs.

I was never a George Bush or John McCain fan but since the alternate was always worst then it was a vote AGAINST a candidate more than FOR a candidate.

Again, it's not what they say but watch what they do.

I SHOULD PROBABLY QUIT BY JOB TODAY. I DON'T NEED IT. OBAMA WILL TAKE CARE OF ME. WE DON'T NEED BUISNESSES AND IDUSTRY, OR POWER AND ELECTRICTY. WE DON'T EVEN NEED A MILITARY ANYMORE. THE WHOLE WORLD IS EXCITED THAT OBAMA WON. KENYA HAS MADE IT A NATIONAL HOLIDAY. EVERYBODY LOVES US NOW. AND BY THE WAY, I WILL NEVER REFER HIM AS PRESIDENT. HE IS NOT MINE, AND HE NEVER WILL BE. What's with all the "America is over" stuff? How much power do you think this man has? He IS NOT super man and he cannot wave a magical wand and make America go away. Name calling is kind of juvenile as well. It's unnecessary and in stead of calling people names and throwing blame already (keep in mind the man hasn't even been sworn in), we should all move ahead to what is to come. We shouldn't be afraid to go into a new era. I was not afraid the first time Bush was elected because I believed that the American people had made the right choice (I wasn't old enough to vote in 2000. I was only 16). I will say I was frightened the 2nd time he was elected; however, I had to respect that he was elected president. Sure, we may not all agree with Obama's policies and I'm sure ALL of the promises he made during the campaign will not be up held because that's just how politicians are, but we must all respect this man because he will be our Commander-in-Chief starting January 20th. If McCain would have won last night and Obama supporters were on here being negative toward his supporters and ideas I would have said the same thing,so it has nothing to with party. I'm sure I will probably be attacked, but I had to say this.

Well it has already started. There is talk and legislation in the works for the government to take over employees 401k plans and put it into the Social Security.

“House Democrats recently invited Teresa Ghilarducci, a professor at the New School of Social Research, to testify before a subcommittee on her idea to eliminate the preferential tax treatment of the popular retirement plans. In place of 401(k) plans, she would have workers transfer their dough into government-created "guaranteed retirement accounts" for every worker. The government would deposit $600 (inflation indexed) every year into the GRAs. Each worker would also have to save 5 percent of pay into the accounts, to which the government would pay a measly 3 percent return. Rep. Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington and chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, said that since "the savings rate isn’t going up for the investment of $80 billion [in 401(k) tax breaks], we have to start to think about whether or not we want to continue to invest that $80 billion for a policy that’s not generating what we now say it should."

Our freedom to manage our money is now going to be taken away from us!

WRONG! If you look at the demographic that voted for Obama, it was the most educated (Doctorate and Master degrees)and also some of the least.

Also if you look at the education levels of the red states compared to the blue states, the blue states blows the red states out of the water most of the time.

Many of the posts here prove why my beloved SC is considered a "safe" red state. While living away from Charleston for almost 40 years I was fortunate to see most of America and live in 7 different states and visit all but a few.

Its a big world out there and the diversity of the people is what makes America great - diversity of color, ethnicity, religion, language, customs, and political point of view. Unfortunately there are too many people here who can't see pass the Charleston County line, too many people who can't get past their bigotry, too many people who are living in the past.

I was really hoping that the Obama haters would drop all of the lies at this point. Honestly, it's very easy to see through all of the lies about socialism, birth certificates and whatnot. Wanting to repeal the tax breaks given to the richest individuals and the biggest businesses isn't socialist. Wanting to ensure that every American can afford health insurance isn't socialist. Wanting every American to perform civic, community or military service to be given financial aid for higher education isn't socialist. If you think Obama or the Democratic party want socialism then you probably don't really understand what socialism is.

The birth certificate issue has already been put to rest by many groups and individuals who are not crazy, crackpot lawyers known for taking frivolous lawsuits.

Everyone should have voted on the actual economic and political issues, not on lies, smears and allegations. It's bad enough that political messages have been turned into massive negative ad campaigns, but what's really horrifying is how easily and mindlessly people will buy into the lies without thinking or researching for themselves.

I voted for Obama yesterday. I was on the fence- but I couldn't give John McCain my vote because of his knit-wit sidekick. I wasn't sure how I would feel if he won...but today feels great! I feel like we really will see change in America..... I am white- but this morning all I could think about was all the blacks treated like garbage before the Civil Rights Movement, who had to watch their Civil Rights leader die in vain for the cause- could stand back and watch this monumental moment that seemed impossible so long ago....BLACK, WHITE, ORANGE or PURPLE, it doesn't matter- I am proud to have a smart, inspirational man as my leader. At least maybe now we can get along with some of the world..

If MLK's dream has been realized and we have elected a man based on the content of his character and not on the color of his skin then the United States of America is clearly no longer a Christian Nation. When baby killing, homosexual life style promoting, anti-American God haters can win elected office in this country it is because the light of Christianity has dimmed to the point of darkness. The difference between Christians and non-Christians should be as easy to see as a candle lit in a dark house but that is no longer the case.

The Christians have no one but themselves to blame and when judgement begins at the house of God we will hopefully respond with repentance and with boldness to once again preach Christ crucified and not a watered down gospel of easy living and getting along. True Christians do not conform to the world but transform the world by the building of the Kingdom of God.

Congratulations to President Obama... but now the real work begins. He has a lot to prove and the whole world is watching.

The one thing he has achieved already is regaining the respect of the rest of the world for the U.S. The international intelligentsia is hailing Obama's victory as a return of reason to the United States.

bkeelin says, "it is because the light of Christianity has dimmed to the point of darkness." Let's hope so. While the educated and intelligent have progressed past the crutch of organized religion to make decisions in lieu of reason, it is clear that some still rely on ancient works of fiction to tell them how to behave. Thankfully, they are a dying breed.

While there is no doubt that the irrational crackpots hoping for a socialist state/Soviet Union/Muslim nation with free-wheeling abortions and kids learning to be gay will be proven to be just that - irrational crackpots - I also am not ready to say Obama will definitely be a successful president. It's a damn hard job.

All I can say is that I think he was the better candidate and I think he will improve the current state of the Union. Far be it from me, though, to think that I can predict the future and guarantee that America will be a better place overall over the next four years.

All I can do is support my President, support the United States, and hope that America becomes stronger.

You are sitting out there salavating for the bigger welfare check you just know is comming your way and you won't have to work for it..........

By January 2, 2011, America will have experienced the most massive tax increase in its history. Be careful what you pray for, it might just come true........

On January 1, 2011, the Standard Deduction for Joint Filers will shrink from 200 to 167 percent of the standard deduction for single filers, creating a marriage penalty.

Dividend rates paid on insurance policies and any other sources of dividends will rise to match standard income tax rates on January 1, 2009.

The Child credit will shrink from $1,000 to $500 per child on January 1, 2011.

Low-income taxpayers will see the 10-percent tax bracket disappear, and they will have to pay taxes at the 15-percent rate starting Jan 1, 2011.

These are “TAX REDUCTIONS” enacted under President George Bush by the “EVIL” Christian Republicans and set by the Socialist Democrats to completely expire by Jan 1, 2011.

Don’t blame me I voted for the old guy and “THE HOT CHICK”!

Exorcist, taxes for individuals, families and small business netting less than a quarter of a million dollars a year will be decreased. Tax credits for those same individuals, families and small business to be applied to health care, educate and other major expenses will be increased.

When Bush used Republican majority control of congress to enact tax cuts early in his presidency those tax cuts gave the wealthiest in the nation and the largest corporations who were sending work overseas tax breaks. What's amazing is that conservatives weren't crying foul when Republicans had majority in Congress and had the Presidency early in Bush's service. I guess it's only a problem when majority control goes the other way and threatens to undo all of the work raping Americans' civil liberties, tearing up the Bill of Rights, giving more money to the already rich and encouraging big businesses to go overseas.

Yird, Marx realize that religion was a powerful force for brainwashing. What does that tell you about all the people who voted against Obama because their religious beliefs or a religious leader told them so? Religion tells you to follow dictates from individuals who tell you that supernatural forces make them and their position right. Education teaches you to think for yourself, do research and make informed decisions.

He demonstrated he is a good guy, but the Busch-legacy called for a radical change. I have been taught graceousness and respect in Charleston, but I do not see it on this board. Must be a lot of Joe 6-packs out there and a lot of Poly-Annas.

And to exorcist and like-minded posters:
It is inevidable to increase taxes and it would not have mattered, if McCain would have won. Who do you think will pay the trillions and trillions in debt and deficit spending of party guy and cheerleader Busch?! Or do you all think you can go on and spend forever what you don't have? I'm sure someone will respond ann call me ignorant or say something nasty but i need to speak out about my feelings at least once... here goes,

i am a christian, i am a mother, i am a tax payer.
i have never considered myself a democrat or a republican.
i voted for who i thought was the best man.

in this case i voted for what i considered the lesser of two evils.

i read everything i could find on all the candidates.
i watched debates for both sides while they were choosing their nominee.
i researched every accusation as it came up..

when i was driving home from the fair last night(saw phil vassar!) i received a text saying Obama won.

my heart became heavy, and tears free flowed down my face.

For me personally this is an event of biblical
proportion(sp?)

the first time i saw obama over a year ago i had a thought...
"My goodness, he is so articulate, and he is promising to have all the answers and to change the world. Oh no, it's time. If he gets elected he is the antichrist"

i have prayed and talked to many who think he will be assasinated.

i do not agree with that. He will fulfill prophecy. Our lives will forever be changed.

CHANGE is not necessarily good... it is just different.

I am sorry if this is rambling to most of you, but for now, i still have freedom to speak my mind.

I pray i am wrong.

In closing,
PLEASE, it we are going to discuss our different opinions and beliefs, let's do it without insulting one another.

your support of your candidate makes it look like an unintelligent person voted when you come on here and call people retards & say na na boo boo??!!!

LETS AGREE TO DISAGREE

GOD BLESS YOU ALL & GOD BLESS AMERICA

yird illustrates the age-old problem: stupid people have no idea what it's like to be smart because they've never been; smart people have no idea what it's like to be a genius because they've never been. The smart and the genius know what it's like to be stupid because they have to live with them everyday.

A gentle pat on the head and a "that's nice, dear," is usually enough to get the stupid to go off and grumble in the corner.

yird, here's what my higher education did for me: it taught me about economics and the history of economic philosophy, which served me very well in this election. It has taught me that politicians are, first and foremost, re-election seekers and will do whatever it takes to stay in office. It taught me to gather and integrate knowledge in a rational way, and to then form my own opinions and express them in an intelligent way so that anyone (even the stupid) can undertand.

What higher education doesn't teach is a good work ethic, honesty, integrity, and motivation. That comes from my genes and my mama and daddy's teachings, not to mention a few positive role-models along the way.

yird, you're clearly not smart enough to understand that higher learning means being exposed to attempts at socialist brain washing, right-wing brain washing, everything in between and, in the end, results in the ability to walk out from that dust cloud with a clear, flexible mind and firm opinions.

Now maybe you have an idea of what it's like to be intelligent and educated. Wave at it, say hello from afar, and go grumble in the corner.

Jane, Obama's citizenship has already been well proven. He was born in the United States to a parent who was already a citizen of the United States. He is also over 35 and has been a US citizen living within the US for the past 14 years. In every way imaginable, Barack Obama qualifies as a citizen of the United States of America. To say that he isn't is to embrace lies and flights of fancy in a last-ditch, obviously desperate bid to invalidate his candidacy.

He was born a citizen, and while Indonesia may not have recognized him as a dual-citizen during his brief tenure there, the US never failed to recognize his citizenship within this nation. There is no record of him becoming a US citizen again because according to all applicable US records, he never stopped being a citizen.

This is to everyone who has posted a comment about the landslide victory last night and it's impact on this nation: It's time to put all the hatred and bigotry aside. Show some respect. Respect has been shown to every other President of the United States, so why stop now?

Like it or not, we have a new President-elect. It's time to support him. Together we stand, divided we fall. This is our country, the land of the FREE, the home of the BRAVE. The free and the brave have spoken. To the naysayers, if you don't like being free and brave, you can relocate to another country. But if you're thinking about migrating to Canada, can you pass the test? Do they even want you? Do you qualify? https://www.canadavisa.com/assess/canada...

Lots of folks showed their true colors during the last year and a half. And they are still showing them. But the majority has spoken. This victory is the epitome of what a true democracy is. This country can now gain back its domestic and international respect and show the world how true democracy works. We can finally lead by example. Come on, people, open your eyes! Look at the big picture and not the small world you see with blinders on. We are now truly the embodiment of the Pledge of Allegiance: "One Nation, under God, with liberty and justice for ALL." If you don't believe these words, then you are not a true American and you don't have a clue. Do you need help packing? I'm available as soon as I finish assisting President Bush.

YES WE CAN AND YES WE DID!

I have lived in many beautiful places in our great nation, and Charleston is no exception. However, I have never experienced as much racism, and ignorance, as I have from SOME of the people living here. Barack Obama is a great example of 'The American Dream', and he has the intelligence, and the determination to bring our nation together, and dig us out of the hole that we are in. He has a black father, and a white mother, and he is a symbol of the greatness that can be created when we look beyond color, and love one another for who we are inside. Our nation will never move forward if we continue to criticize each other, for our differences (race, political beliefs, middle names, etc.). Let's evolve people, and whether we are a Democrat or Republican, any color of the rainbow, gay or straight, we are in this together, for better or worse. The fact that we love our country is something we all have in common, so let's prove it, and embrace our new leader. Let's help him repair the wounds created by poor choices, and find out what WE can do for our country.......not what our country can do for US.

For your information: Barack Obama is not for gay marriage- his religion does not condone the marriage between two men or two women-however; he believes that we should not deny them constitutional rights because they choose their lifestyle- he also stated that he does not believe abortion is okay- but again it is a woman's body and he does not feel he has the right to tell her what to do with it.....so get your information right- watch the debate in which he discussed the issues- I think many of you hate the fact that a black man is your commander in chief- because if he was white, you wouldn't be so harsh....get over it-- and quit bringing up all this religious crap about propecy's and the antichrist- I hate to break it to you- but Christianity is not the only religion in the world and everyone does not believe what you do- that's what is great about this country- I belive in God, but I am happy to live in a country where my neighbor doesn't HAVE to...it's the right to choose your own path that makes this country so great- and all the close-minded people are shivering at the though of change and diversity..well it's coming one way or another so get ready

Why are people acting like the country is going to fall into a steep hole now that Barack is president?

Well, I guess I felt the same way during the 2000 and 2004 elections but nothing of the sort ever....hmmm.

Anyways, at this late date I can't believe we still have crazy people believing he is still not a citizen. I said it over and over but I will say it again. If you didn't vote for him b/c you hate his healthcare plan , his plan to help the economy, tax cuts etc then that is absolutely fine and we can argue it intelligently until the cows come home BUT if you didn't vote for him for stupid reasons like "he's a muslim" (WTF?), "he's not a citizen" (stupid) or any other inane reason that is NOT true or just utter ridiculous, you deserve my ridicule and scorn.

Also, someone mentioned it already BUT black people make up 12% of the population. If every black person voted and no one else supported him it wouldn't have made a difference at all.

PS - Yes voting for someone just b/c they're black is stupid BUT so is NOT voting for someone b/c they're black. You can better believe there were those on both sides of that equation. So when you make statements about black people voting for him kindly remember that there are people who did not vote for him for that same reason.

Once again the left provides evidence of the inadequacy of our educational system.

Deserve? Read the constitution and learn what you "deserve".

Not a job, home, health insurance, or anything else other than the freedom to acquire these thing on your own.

Such gross ignorance is mind boggling!

Jane, don't just mindlessly believe the lies. Do the research for yourself, and work with reputable sources and websites.

Example: http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/ha...

Phil Berg is well known as a crackpot who files frivolous lawsuits for the sake of frivolous lawsuits and getting his fifteen minutes of fame. Nothing that he presents can be verified because it isn't true, just like the made-up story about Obama's Kenyan grandmother allegedly witnessing his birth.

Think about it logically and objectively; in order for all of this tinfoil hat conspiracy hogwash to be true, there would have to have been a conspiracy in place before Obama was even born just on the off chance that someday he might want to run for President of the United States. All things being equal, it's infinitely more likely and more believable that Obama really is a natural-born citizen of the US, given the proof to support that claim versus the unproven lies and allegations to the contrary.

Let me ask you this. What was GWBs approval rating right after the terrorists attacked on 9-11?

Posted by blah_blah_blah on November 5, 2008 at 10:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

southern gent, of course you are a real American, as well as me.

George Bush had a high approval rating, including myself. It is the way that he has handled the war. I mean, bin Laden is still hiding in a cave, and we haven't killed him, yet?
You have to see that the war in Iraq was mishandled and that it has taken the focus off bin Laden.

Congrats President Obama! This was truly a good race.
My friends, lets put aside our differences and come together to help make this country better. If you don't want to do it for yourselves, let try to at least think about our kids and grandkids and great-grands that will have to live in this world.

God Bless!

Exactly...one of the highest EVER in presidential history. So at that point, just about everyone in America thought he was the best person to have in office and were looking at him to protect them. That's what he did. He sent our troops to protect us. As far as I'm concerned, he's still protecting us and doing a better job then Clinton did...can you agree with that?

I made that statement because people like you forget about that day and how well President Bush did when we counted on him the most.

Now that Barack Obama is the new "great black hope", let us all please remember that his mother is white...not just a little white, the direct descendant of slave owners (do the required reading), and NOW that the "new left" has gotten what they so badly wanted, quit calling him black! He's only black in certain states because of a "percentage rule"...his mother is/was white, regardless of father, being mulatto'd because of his father doesn't make him black. Not so many years ago, he wouldn't have been welcome in the traditional black household, either. I got such a laugh out of the Black Panthers at the polling precincts yesterday saying that they were "tired of white supremacy, whites killing our babies" (what???), and they simply have NO idea who they're voting for, only that he's got a polygamist father from Africa. Ann Dunham, thank you for being Obama's Mama...for being the descendant of George Washington Overall, who owned two slaves in Nelson County, Kentucky. NOW WE CAN ALL QUIT HEARING ALL THE DEMANDS FOR RACIAL EQUALITY, FOR "REPARATIONS" FOR WHAT HAD BEEN DONE TO BLACKS SO MANY YEARS AGO, AS YOU ALL HAVE APPARENTLY FORGIVEN THE MISDEEDS OF OUR FORE-FATHERS!!! WE NEVER HAVE TO HEAR IT AGAIN! I, MYSELF, COULD NOT BE MORE THRILLED.

I was waiting to hear of one lovely lady laboring in line to vote. LOL One of my pet peeves (on both sides) is when people refer to McCain, Bush or O'Bama as stupid. They post how they "ranked" in college or their grades. Half of these azzes posting that crap couldnt get into Harvard with a crow bar and a flashlight at 3:00 a.m. I don't like O'Bama one single bit. But he is not dumb as far as book smarts. Nor is McCain or Bush.

How many terrorist attacks have there been on American soil since 9/11..........I guess what GW did worked, huh?

Anyway, I voted for McCain, but now that the election is over we need to pull together or nothing will work. (Hence the phrase 'United we stand, divided we fall.') We must support our president regardless of our differences. He at least deserves a chance.

Plus we have a child on the way and I work two jobs and go to school and have a baby on the way. Another thing is Bush has been able to keep war off of our homeland is obama going to make sure that it doesn't come over here. There are so many worries that I now have. How will we put food on our table and keep our family above water? I really think America has mad a huge mistake!!!

a terrorist attack on an American ally, is an attack on America. Spain, England, American Embassy's in Africa have all experienced terrorist attacks over the past 8 years. so, no, GWB hasn't done his job.

southern gent, i haven't forgot 9/11 nor the mastermind behind it, which is why I voted for the guy who would go kill him. GWB had 8 years, and couldn't do the job.

Meges, Bush hasn't been able to keep this war off of our homeland. In fact, this war started on our homeland on Bush's watch. All Bush has managed to do is get us involved in another, completely unrelated conflict in Iraq while we were in the middle of dealing with the war on terrorism in Afghanistan.

Obama, Biden, Pelosi and Reid have ALL of the power now. Conservatives will not have the votes to fight

socialism,
higher taxes,
falling property values,
an elderly parent unable to get a necessary medical procedure because there's a 13 month wait,
amnesty for illegals . . . .

Time for SC to secede? Maybe. It may be the only way to keep what we've worked so hard to accumulate.....at least those of us who WORK legally

Failed Test2007, a course in reading comprehension might help you.

Below is what I actually wrote.

Deserve?
Read the constitution and learn what you "deserve".

Not a job, home, health insurance, or anything else other than the freedom to acquire these thing on your own.

By the way Americans is usually spelled with a capitol A but in your case the oversight is understandable.

SomeTruth - funny how no one minded him being called black or african-american before now. Don't know what you're talking about but years ago the one-drop rule was in full effect so even if your great-great-great grandmother was black, you were still considered black. So yes, mulattoes, quadroons etc were ALL considered black and were in black households back in the day.

I guess your posts are just like your namesake huh?

Also, um calls for racial equality will not stop just because he is in the white house. That has to be the most idiotic comment of the night. You think b/c he's in the white house all racial issues will magically go away? What exactly are you smoking?

Jane - if you think the American people and our gov't are stupid enough to let a man run and win who is NOT a citizen then you are a fruitcake w/nuts. Your post highlights another issue near and dear to my heart. The state of mental health in this country. People like you should not be roaming around all willy nilly. This is what mental health has come to in our country. Crazies all over, even on P&C boards.

First, no comment on the spelling and grammar. Secondly, this is the very problem with our country today...don't care about the constitution, health care should be given...Like my momma used to say, 'money doesn't grow on trees.' And neither does health care. We currently have the best health care system in the world. Don't believe me, here is an example: In England, if a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, he must wait 2 years before he is even a candidate for surgery. Oh, FYI, the average life expentancy of a man with advanced, untreated prostate cancer....2 years. Be careful what you wish for.

Ever the skeptic, I hope that this new President proves to be an adept one. I am glad to see a change -- Republicans have held the White House for 20 of the last 28 years. I'm not sure why they did not actually accomplish any good, or how our current econimic crisis can be blamed elsewhere.

Except maybe for Congress. It kills me that despite the complaints and the current state of the country people RE-ELECT all of those fools in Washington (and in Columbia for that matter)! It is crazy to thnk that the SAME PEOPLE will change anything. Why should they? They get re-elected for doing harm.

GreenvilleGirl, no one in the Democratic party wants socialism. No one who is throwing around the socialism accusations really understands what that system is or how it really works.

Obama's plan does not call for higher taxes on anyone who isn't independently wealthy. Unless you're making more than a quarter of a million dollars per year your taxes will be going down. For the past eight years the only taxes that Conservatives have been fighting to lower have been taxes for the rich and for big business, which doesn't really do anyone any good.

Nothing that either candid
