'Change has come,' Obama says
Democrat becomes first black to be U.S. president
Abaca Press/MCT
President-elect Barack Obama, along with his wife, Michelle, and children, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, greets the crowd at his rally in Grant Park in Chicago.
WASHINGTON — Barack Obama swept to victory as the nation's first black president Tuesday night in an electoral college landslide that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.
"Change has come," he told a huge throng of jubilant supporters in Chicago.
The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his historic triumph by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain with a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states — Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Iowa and more.
On a night for Democrats to savor, they not only elected Obama the nation's 44th president but padded their majorities in the House and Senate, and come January will control the White House and Congress for the first time since 1994.
Obama's election capped a meteoric rise, from mere state senator to president-elect in four years.
In his first speech as victor, to thousands at Grant Park in his home town of Chicago, Obama catalogued the challenges ahead. "The greatest of a lifetime," he said, "two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century."
He added, "There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face."
Obama also noted that his campaign wasn't born in Washington but in everyday places across the nation.
"I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause."
McCain called his former rival to concede defeat, and the end of his own 10-year quest for the White House. "The American people have spoken, and spoken clearly," McCain told disappointed supporters in Arizona.
President Bush added his congratulations from the White House, where his tenure runs out on Jan. 20. "May God bless whoever wins tonight," he had told dinner guests earlier.
Obama, in his speech, invoked the words of Lincoln and echoed John Kennedy.
"So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder," he said.
He and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, will take their oaths of office as president and vice president on Jan. 20.
The popular vote was relatively close, 51.3 percent to 47.5 percent with 73 percent of all U.S. precincts counted, but not the count in the Electoral College, where it mattered most.
There, Obama's audacious decision to contest McCain in states that hadn't gone Democratic in years paid rich dividends.
Obama has said his first order of presidential business will be to tackle the economy. He has also pledged to withdraw most U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months.
A survey of voters leaving polling places on Tuesday showed the economy was by far the top Election Day issue. Six in 10 voters said so, and none of the other top issues — energy, Iraq, terrorism and health care — was picked by more than one in 10.
In Washington, the Democratic leaders of Congress celebrated.
"It is not a mandate for a party or ideology but a mandate for change," said Senate Majority leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
Said Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California: "Tonight the American people have called for a new direction. They have called for change in America."
Shortly after midnight in the East, The Associated Press count showed Obama with 338 electoral votes, well over the 270 needed for victory.
McCain had 141 after winning states that comprised the normal Republican base.
Interviews with voters suggested that almost six in 10 women were backing Obama nationwide, while men leaned his way by a narrow margin.
Just over half of whites supported McCain, giving him a slim advantage in a group that Bush carried overwhelmingly in 2004.

Congratulations Charleston. We should all be proud that Barack Obama says his campaign "began on the front porches of Charleston". You can be proud that Charleston supported your new President despite the narrow-mindedness of the rest of the State, and a Senator (Graham) who said he will fight Obama "Tooth and Nail".
From observation, we do know Lindsey Graham is capable of carrying John McCain's suitcase around the Country, but how else can he help our State with the new Administration with that kind of announced attitude?

Obama's administration will have to deal with Pres. Bushes many failed policies as well as the global economic crisis & above all else a very nasty suprise which Americas ( & the wests ) many enemies intend to throw his way . We already know about Irans ambition to build the bomb & destroy Israel , Al Quedas intention to continue the global terror campaign & Oil rich & re-armed Russias ambitions in eastern europe & the baltic - Obama & his team will have great difficulty dealing correctly & forceably with these major threats - but what if the threat comes from an entirely different region? I predict that Obamas weakness ( real or perceived ) will be tested right away by the usual suspects so to speak & he will fail miserably thus paving the way for an unexpected crisis , being thrown a curve ball out of left field--Peoples Republic of China , seeing the weakness , will invade & conquer Taiwain whilst a weakend & distracted America struggles with other ongoing conflicts. This is a doom & gloom scenario but one which could easily happen & will lead to a nuclear exchange.

Spanky you change your moniker to liberaltime!
Again, it's always about race but not the content of his character, the issues facing this nation or his political beliefs. I don't have any white guilt, I grew up poor and I went to school with black kids and watch some of them secede in life and some that didn't. You assume that people on the right are racist, that's how you keep the black community on the liberal plantation.
Since self-reliance and hard work don't exist for people on the left it didn't surprise me about the out come of this race. I don't expect the Nanny state social programs paid for by the tax payers to increase the quality of life for the American people any more than the Great Society programs of LBJ. The rich and the rich liberals will move their fortunes to offshore accounts and the middle class will have the burden to pay for all these social programs.
I was never a George Bush or John McCain fan but since the alternate was always worst then it was a vote AGAINST a candidate more than FOR a candidate.
Again, it's not what they say but watch what they do.

What's with all the "America is over" stuff? How much power do you think this man has? He IS NOT super man and he cannot wave a magical wand and make America go away. Name calling is kind of juvenile as well. It's unnecessary and in stead of calling people names and throwing blame already (keep in mind the man hasn't even been sworn in), we should all move ahead to what is to come. We shouldn't be afraid to go into a new era. I was not afraid the first time Bush was elected because I believed that the American people had made the right choice (I wasn't old enough to vote in 2000. I was only 16). I will say I was frightened the 2nd time he was elected; however, I had to respect that he was elected president. Sure, we may not all agree with Obama's policies and I'm sure ALL of the promises he made during the campaign will not be up held because that's just how politicians are, but we must all respect this man because he will be our Commander-in-Chief starting January 20th. If McCain would have won last night and Obama supporters were on here being negative toward his supporters and ideas I would have said the same thing,so it has nothing to with party. I'm sure I will probably be attacked, but I had to say this.

Well it has already started. There is talk and legislation in the works for the government to take over employees 401k plans and put it into the Social Security.
"House Democrats recently invited Teresa Ghilarducci, a professor at the New School of Social Research, to testify before a subcommittee on her idea to eliminate the preferential tax treatment of the popular retirement plans. In place of 401(k) plans, she would have workers transfer their dough into government-created "guaranteed retirement accounts" for every worker. The government would deposit $600 (inflation indexed) every year into the GRAs. Each worker would also have to save 5 percent of pay into the accounts, to which the government would pay a measly 3 percent return. Rep. Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington and chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee's Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, said that since "the savings rate isn't going up for the investment of $80 billion [in 401(k) tax breaks], we have to start to think about whether or not we want to continue to invest that $80 billion for a policy that's not generating what we now say it should."
Our freedom to manage our money is now going to be taken away from us!

Its a big world out there and the diversity of the people is what makes America great - diversity of color, ethnicity, religion, language, customs, and political point of view. Unfortunately there are too many people here who can't see pass the Charleston County line, too many people who can't get past their bigotry, too many people who are living in the past.

I was really hoping that the Obama haters would drop all of the lies at this point. Honestly, it's very easy to see through all of the lies about socialism, birth certificates and whatnot. Wanting to repeal the tax breaks given to the richest individuals and the biggest businesses isn't socialist. Wanting to ensure that every American can afford health insurance isn't socialist. Wanting every American to perform civic, community or military service to be given financial aid for higher education isn't socialist. If you think Obama or the Democratic party want socialism then you probably don't really understand what socialism is.
The birth certificate issue has already been put to rest by many groups and individuals who are not crazy, crackpot lawyers known for taking frivolous lawsuits.
Everyone should have voted on the actual economic and political issues, not on lies, smears and allegations. It's bad enough that political messages have been turned into massive negative ad campaigns, but what's really horrifying is how easily and mindlessly people will buy into the lies without thinking or researching for themselves.

I am white- but this morning all I could think about was all the blacks treated like garbage before the Civil Rights Movement, who had to watch their Civil Rights leader die in vain for the cause- could stand back and watch this monumental moment that seemed impossible so long ago....BLACK, WHITE, ORANGE or PURPLE, it doesn't matter- I am proud to have a smart, inspirational man as my leader. If MLK's dream has been realized and we have elected a man based on the content of his character and not on the color of his skin then the United States of America is clearly no longer a Christian Nation. When baby killing, homosexual life style promoting, anti-American God haters can win elected office in this country it is because the light of Christianity has dimmed to the point of darkness. The difference between Christians and non-Christians should be as easy to see as a candle lit in a dark house but that is no longer the case.
The Christians have no one but themselves to blame and when judgement begins at the house of God we will hopefully respond with repentance and with boldness to once again preach Christ crucified and not a watered down gospel of easy living and getting along. True Christians do not conform to the world but transform the world by the building of the Kingdom of God.

Congratulations to President Obama... but now the real work begins. He has a lot to prove and the whole world is watching.
The one thing he has achieved already is regaining the respect of the rest of the world for the U.S. The international intelligentsia is hailing Obama's victory as a return of reason to the United States.
bkeelin says, "it is because the light of Christianity has dimmed to the point of darkness." Let's hope so. While the educated and intelligent have progressed past the crutch of organized religion to make decisions in lieu of reason, it is clear that some still rely on ancient works of fiction to tell them how to behave. Thankfully, they are a dying breed.
While there is no doubt that the irrational crackpots hoping for a socialist state/Soviet Union/Muslim nation with free-wheeling abortions and kids learning to be gay will be proven to be just that - irrational crackpots - I also am not ready to say Obama will definitely be a successful president. It's a damn hard job.
All I can say is that I think he was the better candidate and I think he will improve the current state of the Union. Far be it from me, though, to think that I can predict the future and guarantee that America will be a better place overall over the next four years.
All I can do is support my President, support the United States, and hope that America becomes stronger.

By January 2, 2011, America will have experienced the most massive tax increase in its history. Be careful what you pray for, it might just come true........
On January 1, 2011, the Standard Deduction for Joint Filers will shrink from 200 to 167 percent of the standard deduction for single filers, creating a marriage penalty.
Dividend rates paid on insurance policies and any other sources of dividends will rise to match standard income tax rates on January 1, 2009.
The Child credit will shrink from $1,000 to $500 per child on January 1, 2011.
Low-income taxpayers will see the 10-percent tax bracket disappear, and they will have to pay taxes at the 15-percent rate starting Jan 1, 2011.
These are "TAX REDUCTIONS" enacted under President George Bush by the "EVIL" Christian Republicans and set by the Socialist Democrats to completely expire by Jan 1, 2011.

Exorcist, taxes for individuals, families and small business netting less than a quarter of a million dollars a year will be decreased. Tax credits for those same individuals, families and small business to be applied to health care, educate and other major expenses will be increased.
When Bush used Republican majority control of congress to enact tax cuts early in his presidency those tax cuts gave the wealthiest in the nation and the largest corporations who were sending work overseas tax breaks. What's amazing is that conservatives weren't crying foul when Republicans had majority in Congress and had the Presidency early in Bush's service. I guess it's only a problem when majority control goes the other way and threatens to undo all of the work raping Americans' civil liberties, tearing up the Bill of Rights, giving more money to the already rich and encouraging big businesses to go overseas.
Yird, Marx realize that religion was a powerful force for brainwashing. I'm sure someone will respond ann call me ignorant or say something nasty but i need to speak out about my feelings at least once... here goes,
i am a christian, i am a mother, i am a tax payer.
i have never considered myself a democrat or a republican.
i voted for who i thought was the best man.
in this case i voted for what i considered the lesser of two evils.
i read everything i could find on all the candidates.
i watched debates for both sides while they were choosing their nominee.
i researched every accusation as it came up..
when i was driving home from the fair last night(saw phil vassar!) i received a text saying Obama won.
my heart became heavy, and tears free flowed down my face.
For me personally this is an event of biblical
proportion(sp?)
the first time i saw obama over a year ago i had a thought...
"My goodness, he is so articulate, and he is promising to have all the answers and to change the world. Oh no, it's time. If he gets elected he is the antichrist"
i have prayed and talked to many who think he will be assasinated.
i do not agree with that. He will fulfill prophecy. Our lives will forever be changed.
CHANGE is not necessarily good... it is just different.
I am sorry if this is rambling to most of you, but for now, i still have freedom to speak my mind.
I pray i am wrong.
In closing,
PLEASE, it we are going to discuss our different opinions and beliefs, let's do it without insulting one another.
your support of your candidate makes it look like an unintelligent person voted when you come on here and call people retards & say na na boo boo??!!!

yird illustrates the age-old problem: stupid people have no idea what it's like to be smart because they've never been; smart people have no idea what it's like to be a genius because they've never been. The smart and the genius know what it's like to be stupid because they have to live with them everyday.
A gentle pat on the head and a "that's nice, dear," is usually enough to get the stupid to go off and grumble in the corner.
yird, here's what my higher education did for me: it taught me about economics and the history of economic philosophy, which served me very well in this election. It has taught me that politicians are, first and foremost, re-election seekers and will do whatever it takes to stay in office. It taught me to gather and integrate knowledge in a rational way, and to then form my own opinions and express them in an intelligent way so that anyone (even the stupid) can undertand.
What higher education doesn't teach is a good work ethic, honesty, integrity, and motivation. That comes from my genes and my mama and daddy's teachings, not to mention a few positive role-models along the way.
yird, you're clearly not smart enough to understand that higher learning means being exposed to attempts at socialist brain washing, right-wing brain washing, everything in between and, in the end, results in the ability to walk out from that dust cloud with a clear, flexible mind and firm opinions.
Now maybe you have an idea of what it's like to be intelligent and educated. Wave at it, say hello from afar, and go grumble in the corner.

He is also over 35 and has been a US citizen living within the US for the past 14 years. In every way imaginable, Barack Obama qualifies as a citizen of the United States of America. To say that he isn't is to embrace lies and flights of fancy in a last-ditch, obviously desperate bid to invalidate his candidacy.
He was born a citizen, and while Indonesia may not have recognized him as a dual-citizen during his brief tenure there, the US never failed to recognize his citizenship within this nation. There is no record of him becoming a US citizen again because according to all applicable US records, he never stopped being a citizen.

This is to everyone who has posted a comment about the landslide victory last night and it's impact on this nation: It's time to put all the hatred and bigotry aside. Show some respect. Respect has been shown to every other President of the United States, so why stop now?
Like it or not, we have a new President-elect. It's time to support him. Together we stand, divided we fall. This is our country, the land of the FREE, the home of the BRAVE. The free and the brave have spoken. To the naysayers, if you don't like being free and brave, you can relocate to another country. But if you're thinking about migrating to Canada, can you pass the test? Do they even want you? Do you qualify? https://www.canadavisa.com/assess/can...
Lots of folks showed their true colors during the last year and a half. And they are still showing them. But the majority has spoken. This victory is the epitome of what a true democracy is. This country can now gain back its domestic and international respect and show the world how true democracy works. We can finally lead by example. Come on, people, open your eyes! Look at the big picture and not the small world you see with blinders on. We are now truly the embodiment of the Pledge of Allegiance: "One Nation, under God, with liberty and justice for ALL." If you don't believe these words, then you are not a true American and you don't have a clue. Do you need help packing? I'm available as soon as I finish assisting President Bush.

I have lived in many beautiful places in our great nation, and Charleston is no exception. However, I have never experienced as much racism, and ignorance, as I have from SOME of the people living here. Barack Obama is a great example of 'The American Dream', and he has the intelligence, and the determination to bring our nation together, and dig us out of the hole that we are in. He has a black father, and a white mother, and he is a symbol of the greatness that can be created when we look beyond color, and love one another for who we are inside. Our nation will never move forward if we continue to criticize each other, for our differences (race, political beliefs, middle names, etc.). Let's evolve people, and whether we are a Democrat or Republican, any color of the rainbow, gay or straight, we are in this together, for better or worse. The fact that we love our country is something we all have in common, so let's prove it, and embrace our new leader. Let's help him repair the wounds created by poor choices, and find out what WE can do for our country.......not what our country can do for US.

For your information: Barack Obama is not for gay marriage- his religion does not condone the marriage between two men or two women-however; he believes that we should not deny them constitutional rights because they choose their lifestyle- he also stated that he does not believe abortion is okay- but again it is a woman's body and he does not feel he has the right to tell her what to do with it.....so get your information right- watch the debate in which he discussed the issues- I think many of you hate the fact that a black man is your commander in chief- because if he was white, you wouldn't be so harsh....get over it-- and quit bringing up all this religious crap about propecy's and the antichrist- I hate to break it to you- but Christianity is not the only religion in the world and everyone does not believe what you do- that's what is great about this country- I belive in God, but I am happy to live in a country where my neighbor doesn't HAVE to...it's the right to choose your own path that makes this country so great- and all the close-minded people are shivering at the though of change and diversity..well it's coming one way or another so get ready

Why are people acting like the country is going to fall into a steep hole now that Barack is president?
Well, I guess I felt the same way during the 2000 and 2004 elections but nothing of the sort ever....hmmm.
Anyways, at this late date I can't believe we still have crazy people believing he is still not a citizen. I said it over and over but I will say it again. If you didn't vote for him b/c you hate his healthcare plan , his plan to help the economy, tax cuts etc then that is absolutely fine and we can argue it intelligently until the cows come home BUT if you didn't vote for him for stupid reasons like "he's a muslim" (WTF?), "he's not a citizen" (stupid) or any other inane reason that is NOT true or just utter ridiculous, you deserve my ridicule and scorn.
Also, someone mentioned it already BUT black people make up 12% of the population. If every black person voted and no one else supported him it wouldn't have made a difference at all.
PS - Yes voting for someone just b/c they're black is stupid BUT so is NOT voting for someone b/c they're black. You can better believe there were those on both sides of that equation. So when you make statements about black people voting for him kindly remember that there are people who did not vote for him for that same reason.

Jane, don't just mindlessly believe the lies. Do the research for yourself, and work with reputable sources and websites.
Example: http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck...
Phil Berg is well known as a crackpot who files frivolous lawsuits for the sake of frivolous lawsuits and getting his fifteen minutes of fame. Nothing that he presents can be verified because it isn't true, just like the made-up story about Obama's Kenyan grandmother allegedly witnessing his birth.
Think about it logically and objectively; in order for all of this tinfoil hat conspiracy hogwash to be true, there would have to have been a conspiracy in place before Obama was even born just on the off chance that someday he might want to run for President of the United States. All things being equal, it's infinitely more likely and more believable that Obama really is a natural-born citizen of the US, given the proof to support that claim versus the unproven lies and allegations to the contrary.

Now that Barack Obama is the new "great black hope", let us all please remember that his mother is white...not just a little white, the direct descendant of slave owners (do the required reading), and NOW that the "new left" has gotten what they so badly wanted, quit calling him black! He's only black in certain states because of a "percentage rule"...his mother is/was white, regardless of father, being mulatto'd because of his father doesn't make him black. Not so many years ago, he wouldn't have been welcome in the traditional black household, either. I got such a laugh out of the Black Panthers at the polling precincts yesterday saying that they were "tired of white supremacy, whites killing our babies" (what???), and they simply have NO idea who they're voting for, only that he's got a polygamist father from Africa. Ann Dunham, thank you for being Obama's Mama...for being the descendant of George Washington Overall, who owned two slaves in Nelson County, Kentucky. NOW WE CAN ALL QUIT HEARING ALL THE DEMANDS FOR RACIAL EQUALITY, FOR "REPARATIONS" FOR WHAT HAD BEEN DONE TO BLACKS SO MANY YEARS AGO, AS YOU ALL HAVE APPARENTLY FORGIVEN THE MISDEEDS OF OUR FORE-FATHERS!!! So yes, mulattoes, quadroons etc were ALL considered black and were in black households back in the day.
I guess your posts are just like your namesake huh?
Also, um calls for racial equality will not stop just because he is in the white house. That has to be the most idiotic comment of the night. You think b/c he's in the white house all racial issues will magically go away? What exactly are you smoking?

First, no comment on the spelling and grammar. Secondly, this is the very problem with our country today...don't care about the constitution, health care should be given...Like my momma used to say, 'money doesn't grow on trees.' And neither does health care. We currently have the best health care system in the world. Don't believe me, here is an example: In England, if a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, he must wait 2 years before he is even a candidate for surgery. Oh, FYI, the average life expentancy of a man with advanced, untreated prostate cancer....2 years. Be careful what you wish for.

Obama's plan does not call for higher taxes on anyone who isn't independently wealthy. Unless you're making more than a quarter of a million dollars per year your taxes will be going down. For the past eight years the only taxes that Conservatives have been fighting to lower have been taxes for the rich and for big business, which doesn't really do anyone any good.
Nothing that either candidate said about their health plans suggests longer wait times. In fact, both candidates have argued that their plans for making health care more efficient will make it cost less and work more quickly.

If he isn't a soldier, please tell us what he does that he would lose his job when the soldiers are pulled out of Iraq? If he is doing something that he can only do during war time, then his mistake was thinking that the war would last forever. He never thought about the fact that the war may end someday? Like I guessed yird, right from the conservative playbook.
Well I do not have much time for debate (busy working from having half the day off yesterday), yet anyone with a postgraduate education can attest, graduate schools usually give various view points (something talk shows do not do), not just one particular ideology, theory or what ever you have it. Most of these ideas are reasoned based or scientific and are tested through scientific methods or empirical evidence. Another thing higher education does is teach you critical thinking skills and through this the ability to think for yourself. From your comment that came from the right winged playbook (obliviously from talk radio) shows that critical thinking is a skill that apparently you lack. Because of these critical thinking skills, an educated person is not as easily duped by the propaganda that much of the right winged media spews and the knee jerking reactionary buzz words they use such as unpatriotic, un-American or what ever else they use.

This lightweight doesnt believe in killing the bad guys, the libs just want to give them some psychotherapy and turn them loose. Remember...we cant even pour water down the mouth of the little cutthroats (er...little darlings). That causes them to be uncomfortable (another similarity between the libs and the terrorists, take your pick as to which one I meant).
We just need to live with the fact that the liberal pantywaists will now have control of the sword. When the next attack comes (and it will come now that we have a pantywaist dem in the Commander in Chiefs seat) they will wring their hands and lob a few Tomahawk missiles into some tent and kill a few camels (Bill Clintons M.O.)

America, what a great experiment. The democratic process has worked yet again. Was a registered Republican for 20 years and voted as such. This time around I voted my conscience. Now I'm a registered American and will leave it at that. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, powerful stuff here in my country-here in our country. A positive attitude is the starting point for all accomplishments, both personal and professional.

I predict a 6-12 month honeymoon period in office before everyone realizes that he is simply another politician. Obama will be judged and evaluated rather harshly, because people want results within a reasonable time and they probably will not get what they want as quickly as they want it.I am very happy to have a new face representing our country. While I don't really agree with his policies and ideas, having a younger black man as the figurehead of our country for the first time in history is great. I am also proud to have a good orator in office after the rambling and sometimes idiotic Bush. I am satisfied that the 60 majority in the Senate was not reached now they have to work together.

Again, it's always about race but not the content of his character, the issues facing this nation or his political beliefs. I don't have any white guilt, I grew up poor and I went to school with black kids and watch some of them secede in life and some that didn't. yird - smart move turning down "several opportunities to attend college." You dodged that bullet! Who knows, you might have been able to manage an intelligent thought if you'd gotten that education!
While I do have educational debt, I pay 1.5x my monthly payment, while affording a reasonable mortgage, living within my means, and putting away a modest amount for retirement. My educational loans (while it would be great if I didn't have the debt) afforded me the freedom to choose a career that I enjoy going to everyday. You can't put a price tag on that. While I live this happy, fulfilling life, my net worth steadily grows. That, by the way, is finance, not economics. If you'd like further explanation of the difference, I'd be happy to oblige. I hope to someday be in the tax bracket that will allow me to pay higher taxes under Obama's plan. If I achieve that, I will gratefully assist in paying down George W's deficit to help this country. See how smart I am?
For those who continue to rant against the intellectual elite, do you really want yird or Jane or Riptide leading anything? You want (and need) the intellectual elite leading this country, performing your surgery, and engineering your car. Denying it just makes me want to humble you. And it's not hard.

----NO, his FATHER was not in the picture. His mother raised him for a period of time BEFORE he went to stay with his grandparents and returned to Hawaii to live for a while during his middle school years I believe. So he was raised by his mother AND his grandparents. He only saw his father a couple of times. Do you even understand how most black families live? You seem to be such an expert on the subject. I am black and I wouldn't even go out on a limb to say how most black families live. That is because I don't know every black family.
I have a problem with people thinking he's one of them, when he's not.
----You make absolutely no sense at all. What do you mean "one of them"? Are people not supposed to find something in common with him? He was raised by a single mom and grandparents, a lot of people I know were raised by one or the other or both. Thankfully I wasn't, but it is not all that uncommon.
His color means nothing to me - I would have no problem voting for a black man or woman. I just don't want to live under socialism.
----So do you even know what socialism is or means? That word is thrown around a lot these days. You do realize that some people think we already live that way and have been for the past 8 years. Ok, so you believe socialism is evil. Hypothetically speaking, how would socialism affect your life? Details.

You are sitting out there salavating for the bigger welfare check you just know is comming your way and you won't have to work for it..........
--------------------------------------------
By January 2, 2011, America will have experienced the most massive tax increase in its history.
--------------------------------------------
These are "TAX REDUCTIONS" enacted under President George Bush by the "EVIL" Christian Republicans and set by the Socialist Democrats to completely expire by Jan 1, 2011.
Don't blame me I voted for the old guy and "THE HOT CHICK"!

Southerngent, I live every day of my life without MTV. I neither watch nor care for that television station, nor does it influence my daily life or my actions in any way whatsoever. Whether it predates my existence or the other way around makes no difference. You seem to be in a frenzy to lay the blame for some of this nation's woes on a scapegoat like MTV instead of taking up your own share of the collective blame.
Again I will point out to you that even though the US was dealing with terrorism before 9/11, the attacks on that day and the significant change in our response to them have made what we call the War on Terror a different animal altogether from our previous attempts to respond to international and domestic terrorism. The raping of the Bill of Rights and the violations of American citizens' civil liberties alone in this new War on Terror are astounding. For a war all about freedom, it's appalling how much less free we are as citizens in our own country.
You're deceiving yourself if you really believe that the US approach to terrorism didn't go through a monumental change after 9/11. Attacking other nations with the scapegoat of terrorism is a new tactic that came about under the Bush regime. Previous presidents employed more precise and effective methods of attacking specific terrorist groups and camps and targeting those involved in specific incidents.
I haven't said anything insulting to Americans, I've only offered criticism of lies and slander, and I pointed out the fact that Bush's War on Terror hasn't been as successful as some would be led to believe. What is more insulting is your insinuation about "real" Americans. We're all Americans, and that makes us all "real" Americans. You aren't any more American than I am just because you have different political views. And just because I don't serve in the military doesn't mean that I'm not fighting for our collective rights and freedoms as American citizens. Take your nouveau-McCarthyism and stow it.

yird - Taking on some educational debt might have served you well as it is required in institutions of higher learning to read books and, thus, hone reading comprehension skills.
yird says, "1) you cannot establish financial security on borrowed funds." Wrong. The key to financial stability is diversification, living within your means, and growing your net wealth. Carrying a credit card balance (which I don't) creates financial insecurity, while buying a house (again - within your means) is a strong move toward financial stability.
Are you saying that anyone who owns a house who didn't pay cash for it is financially insecure? Yes, that's what you are saying and that is, yet again, uninformed.
"2) You cannot borrow your way out of debt." On the whole I agree with the sentiment of your statement that it is probably not a good idea, but the statement is actually false. If you borrow money with an interest rate lower than the rate of gain you get from your investment from that loan, you can, indeed, borrow your way out of debt. But you'd better be sure about your investment or be able to sustain the potential loss.
The information you provide is "priceless" because it is worthless. You are exposing your primitive ideas about money and politics. Take this and realize how little you know. Use that healthy portfolio of yours and buy some books, a few college classes, or someone to do your posting for you.
So that's your finance lesson for the day. If you want to enter the remarkably more complex world of economics, I'd be happy to release to you the 0.1% of my brain required to expand yours by 300%.

We voted for him because GWB had 8 years and we are tired of that broken path. We voted for him because of his stance of the various political issues facing our country.
You say God bleess our USA, but you are not blessing it at all with your false thoughts and venimous words. If you want God to bless our country, you would not be so divisive.

JUDGES 4:verse:6 speaks of Barack a man chosen to lead a nation if you dont believe me go read it. This world is not run by black or white this is the world of the lord and always have and always will be so for the people who have negative things to say about our new president go to GOD in prayer because it is Barack's time and you cant take it away im sure you dont like it but this will go down in history books for your children, grandchildren and great grand children to know that a EDUCATED BEAUTIFUL AFRICAN AMERICAN PROUD BLACK MAN was and forever will be the 44th President of the UNITED States OF AMERICA. I never believed it could happen but now i know the beatings our ancestors endured the pain, Martin Luther KIng Jr's walk Rosa Parks just wanting to sit down was never in vain and I thank GOD for everything that happened then because yesterday would have never happened without that pain. We are all created equal so i know negative remarks are not in regards to how much Barack may know but in regards to him being black but think about it to those of you who dont like the fact that he is black remember he is also white. Maybe it was your ancestor that took our ancestors as a slave and abused her body to make us a mixed race eveything happens for a reason and im proud to say that i am an American CONGRATS Barack CONGRATS no one can take 11/04/08 from you!!!!

Mosinfan, it's ironic that you would mention people not knowing about the Constitution of the United States of America after you were just advocating torture in a previous post. If you yourself knew anything about the Constitution or the Bill of Rights which was amended to the Constitution in order for it to be ratified you would know that fair trial and protection from cruel and unusual punishment are forbidden by that document.
After the many crimes against our civil liberties and violations of the Bill of Rights during Bush's administration it's a wonder anyone remembers the Constitution or the Bill of Rights at all.
Obama's supporters aren't mindless drones and they aren't looking for a nanny state or a savior. What they are looking for - and rightfully so - is a government that isn't giving handouts and discounts to the rich and big business and which won't trample all over our individual rights and freedoms. What they are looking for is a government in which they will be able to actively participate, which will be accountable to the people and which will reward hard work and ingenuity from those who aren't already independently wealthy.

You take what you hear on MTV, Oprah or any other liberal media source of your choice and regurgitate it to the very people who've kept your immature behinds free and safe.
This war did not start on 911 (please Google "terrorists attacks while Clinton was in office") and you will be much more educated.
Your original comments that I posted on are insulting to real Americans:Americans who actually fight (or have fought) for freedom. Therefore, I stick to my original statement; please move to another country. I'm thinking you'll fit right in over in France. Au revoir!

Is that what everyone wanted? Are those the new "White House Cheerleaders"? I was appalled, as I hope Obama was. I hope that he sends a letter to the Black Panther headquarters to let them know that they do NOT represent him in any way. It was despicable, and quite frankly, I wish had been taken out in a drive-by. I don't think Obama wants to be represented by thugs. So much has already been made about Obama "not being black enough", "not talking black enough", so I don't think that's quite the representation that he wanted.

If you voted for Obama in South Carolina, your vote meant absolutely NOTHING. You should have saved your time, because your Obama vote was in no way, shape, or form reflected in the Electoral College. So how does that feel, liberals?

It feels like Obama got a handful more votes than people were expecting in this state, Summerville_guy; it feels like in SC it was a tighter race than people were willing to believe. At a difference of less than 200,000 votes, it's clear that those who voted for McCain in South Carolina don't speak for everyone. Keep that in mind next time you want to gloat.
Votes for Obama in South Carolina weren't for naught. It showed that there is a significant portion of the population even in this state that wants a change in the way this country has been run.

ltgrunt thanks for taking the challenge...been looking for a drone to give me some liberal tripe on their view of the Constitution.
For starters lets begin with the issue of Cruel and Unusual Punishment. For one to understand the intent of the written Constitution, one must research Original Intent. This is done by looking at what the very writers were diong at the time and what they were saying in that era about that particular subject. Heavy stuff for a drone but stick with me here. The very founders who wrote the 8th Amendment were not averse to using different tactics (short of injury) to get much needed information from captured enemy. Waterboarding does not inflict any injury at all. Its all psychological. Again, pantywaist liberals cant handle this.
Next lets go to the issue of what you call "After the many crimes against our civil liberties and violations of the Bill of Rights during Bush's administration it's a wonder anyone remembers the Constitution or the Bill of Rights at all."
I curiously noted that you did not list not one single example of these "violations". Typical liberal tactic, make an outrageous statement that the rest of the drones can latch onto.
Lets have some of those violations here for the rest of us to see. And please when you list what you have...please cite the Article, Section, and Clause of the violation in the United States Constitution. That should not be too much to ask of a liberal genius.
Lets give it a break there for you to catch up...
and again, specifics please...not liberal rants and accusations. I know the drones go for that but thinking folks dont buy it.

With that being said the life you had growing up was probably far easier than the one many people are growing up in today. As I put myself thru college, work a full-time job for a lawyer, raise my daughter, pay my rent, supply food for my home, gas for my car, car insurance (it's required) and daycare (I am sure I could list many more expenses) I am left with very little. One day I will be able to afford my own health insurance (hence the reason I am going thru college, half way to getting a BS in Accounting) but, until that day shouldn't I be able to lead a healthy life? If I was on welfare with 5 kids and foodstamps they would have given me health insurance for free... Wait I have an idea let me drop everything I am doing and be nothing for the rest of my life just so that I can have health insurance.

GreenvilleGirl, no one in the Democratic party wants socialism. No one who is throwing around the socialism accusations really understands what that system is or how it really works.
ltgrunt some of us, who I fear are older and wiser than you, do know what socialism means, and in case you are not aware, let me define it for you here and now and possible bring some much needed reality to your generation.
Socialism -economic and social system under which essential industries and social services are publicly and cooperatively owned and democratically controlled with a view to equal opportunity and equal benefit for all. The term socialism also refers to the doctrine behind this system and the political movement inspired by it.
Socialism was originally based in the working class and has generally been opposed to capitalism, which is based on private ownership and a free-market economy. Socialists have advocated nationalization (GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP and CONTROL) of natural resources, basic industries, banking and credit institutions, and public utilities.
If that doesn't scare you now, it will as you get older, married, have a family, and own a home, possibly open a business of your own.

When you are old if you are not conservative you have no brain."

For those of you who have no clue about an individual's racial identity, here's something you should know: the individual who has identified Barack Obama as "black" is Barack Obama. Everyone has the right to identify themselves in any way they please, be it "black," "Asian-American," "African-American" "White," "Caublinasian" etc. We may not and do not have to agree with it, but it's THEIR preference. No one person speaks for an entire race with regard to identity/labels and no race speaks for an individual.
"Mixed" is not a race, national origin, or color. Here's something a little closer to home for you: Strom Thurmond's "half black" [adult] child has always been identified as "black":especially in SC: no one has ever expressed offense because she was identified as "black".
Essie and Barack are no different. Like all "mixed" people, both individuals have a command on who they are and how they choose to be identified.
There are too many important issues on which to focus in the days ahead.

Mosinfan, there are examples of United States citizens who have been taken into custody for indeterminate periods of time under no charges and with no trial. This is in direct violation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Torture is torture, whether it is physical or psychological. Waterboarding is torture, even if it does not do any physical harm. Additionally, there is the fact that it is clearly cruel, as the psychological damage it inflicts will attest, and it is highly unusual compared to the concepts of rehabilitation that our penal system is based on.
The Constitution is a living document - it does not exist within a vacuum, applicable only to the time and place of its writing. With what we now understand about the damaging effects that psychological torture has even when the body remains unharmed, it is our moral obligation to assign psychological torture to the same category as any form of physical torture, which clearly fits with the category of cruel and unusual punishment.
I'm not going to catalog the entire list of offenses against our civil rights that the Bush administration has committed, especially since you seem all too eager to be the apologist, or even worse to defend those actions. Essentially, it doesn't matter what examples I provide, because you are either going to categorically deny their occurrence, their meaning, or what should even be considered a civil rights violation simply to vindicate your own views. It is sufficient to say that when a teenage girl gets yanked out of her high school classroom to be interrogated by the Secret Service over a comment on her MySpace page, all of our civil rights are under attack.

Just as I thought, not one single solitary example of a violation and specific citation in the United States Constitution. Typical drone response. Hurl accusation after accusation without any basis except what you have heard form the likes of Keith Olberman or some other liberal media drone.
As for the Constitution being a living document. That is the Liberal position. Unfortunately it doesnt square with logic, historical precedent or fact. The framers intended the Constitution to be interpreted the way it was written. that is why they gave us an amendment process (see Article 5). If they just expected us to interpret according to our everyday whim they would not have given us the process to change it.
The problem with you libs is that you would rather have your activist judges legislate new meaning from the bench at every turn. If you think the document is outdated, take your case before the people and amend it. Dont like that idea too much do you...
Enough, I can tell your not thinking on your own here...come back when you can disconnect from the mother ship.

But when it all boils down to it, nobody in any red states had anything to do with Obama getting elected. Or, for that matter, with McCain losing. If you are an Obama supporter in South Carolina, thank the blue states for putting him in office.
And Tammie, you're right. McCain will obviously never be president. I just hope that Obama will do a good job and keep his campaign promises. It will be interesting to see. I know everyone is excited that we have our first "black" president but am I wrong or isn't he "Bi racial"? doesn't that make him half black and half white? Why does he only relate to his blackness? Just kind of makes whites feel disowned by this president. It seems if someone really wanted to be a healer to the racial problems in America that he would use his biracial status to that advantage.

halfsheli, again...no specific citation of the Constitution violation. A vague mention of the 4th Amendment does not qualify.
As for the Patriot Act, let me give you a news flash...A Democrat controlled congress (both houses) voted on and passed this Act not once but twice. Numerous terrorists acts have been directly identified and stopped because of this. You dont really think that we have not suffered an attack in 8 years because the terrorist scumbags have not tried do you? Say what you want about President Bush but the fact remains we have not been successfully attacked by terrorist scum in 8 years.
Oncy our newly elected messiah takes over and unravels all of the safegaurds put in place....God help us. We will be back to the patsy role that Clinton left us in for 9/11.

Hightide, your comments all well taken by me, and I understand your position. The only thing I'm trying to say here is that people need to understand that they are in charge of their own destinies and they shouldn't rely and depend on any politician, congressman, senator, or any other elected official to rescue them from their present circumstances (i.e. financial burdens). I was raised in the "old school" that taught you work hard, pay your debts (that is the debts that you truly can afford to have in the first place), try to save some along the way, and have faith in God that he will sustain you. Maybe that's a little too simple minded for most people, but I never have a problem in keeping this as my motto. If you've ever heard of Dave Ramsey (he's on the Fox Business network every night at 8:00), this is what he tries to drill in every viewer's head. No charge cards and self-discipline. There are a lot of people in this country that need to learn that valuable lesson. If they did, they wouldn't find themselves "in the hole" all the time.

Let me jump and the race train for a moment. When filling out a birth certificate for a baby you can only be one race. The rule of thumb as I know it is what ever race your father is, is the race you are. My daughter is biracial, I am white and her father is black. According to the government she can't be both so I had to choose and I choose black. Such a beautiful color. I felt like my daughter would be accepted into a black community (because of her darker skin color) before she would be classified as white. So to everyone questioning why we keep referring to him as "black" and not "black and white" it's because the government said so. I VOTED OBAMA 08!!!!!

Mochas- you need to look that up. I'm sure there is a website or some type of national report that can direct you to your answer...it can break it down for you to view however you like. I did not check the voter registration for neither the democrats or the republicans as far as who registered for the first time, I did not check to see who changed their party ties and went to whatever side. I did not check to see what our first time voters thought about what candidate. I did not look at stats for white, black, or other.
That's something you really need to research for yourself, you are not going to find the answer you want, or don't want here.

I hope all Obama supporters, who are telling those who supported another (& that is not necessarily McCain) to be "good Americans" & support our new President, have practiced, over the last 8 years, what they are now preaching. If not, sit down & shut up. The last thing a new President needs is a bunch of hypocrites as supporters. Look how far that got the last President.
(BTW, I agree that we Americans need to support our President & keep criticisms as constructive as possible...)
As important as the potential impact of who we elect to run this country is, it is NOT the most important thing in the world. The sun still came up. We have our families & friends, & for many of us, our faith.
At the end of last wk, a heart breaking, gut wrenching tragedy of unimaginable magnitude happened to a family that my family, as well as a host of others, loves very much. Events of that magnitude have a way of putting many of the less important events of life into perspective. I'm not saying the election was not important. But let us not misplace it in the scheme of life.
As I was standing in line to vote, a woman told me she & her brother got into a fight over this election that is so huge they are not speaking to each other. Life is too fragile & unpredictable to waste time being estranged from loved ones over the politics of an election.
PS to Lovely
Prayers & good thoughts to you & your family as you anticipate the arrival of your newest lovely one & our new fellow American!

President Obama. That sounds so good to me
President Obama. Leader of the land of the free
With Timberlands on, you'd think I was six feet five
But today I've never felt taller in any day I've been alive
Joy exudes from my body. There's an excitement I can't hide
It's so hard to explain, it's a different type of pride
Yes we can! Yes we will! And yes we did
But this is only the latest stop in our journey to rid
To rid America of it's injustice and inequality
And I thank you President Obama with great sincerity
For the dreams of all our ancestors you decided to tote
From M.L.K. to Harriet Tubman to the slaves brought over on a boat
Slaves cast away in chains: beaten with whips
Mothers who had their children torn away from their hips
Our people were sold on auction like a piece of equipment
That alone is worth a thousand years of resentment
Our women were raped freely. We were forced in the fields to pick cotton
The struggles of our people shall never be forgotten
We were sprayed with fire hoses: beaten and thrown in jail
Being black in America was the closest thing to hell
Hung from trees and set on fire from the kkk
And through it all we overcame. Look at us today
When I was fifteen years old, a white man called me a dumb n****r
Because I said, "One day our president would be black." How about that: go figure
He said, "Before a black man is president, it'll be a cold day in hell!"
I hope satan and his demons have bundled up well
I take time to reflect on all of the drama
We went from yes sir massa' to yes Sir, President Obama
You took Mr. King's dream and you ran through the door
President Obama: number forty-four
Like Mike and Lebron, I wanted to wear twenty-three
But now you'll see a sticker of forty-four on any jersey on me
Just like this poem, that'll be a tribute to you
For all you have done and all you will do
I told myself when you won, I would act a straight fool
Til you stepped on that stage and redefined cool
In order to honor you, I can't act an ass
Because President Obama, you're the epitome of class
And we thank you so much, for taking a chance
For so many people, you are a true deliverance
With the economy down and everyone wanting to mope
You made us believe. We thank you for hope
And we know the struggles not over. No this is only the beginning
But with this new found hope, we can again see the ending
Just like the Reverends Martin, Jessie, and Al saw the end of segregation
We can see the end of the struggle, under your delegation
So in what will now go down as the greatest demonstration
Of hope and change in the history of our nation
President Obama: we thank you
First Lady Obama: we thank you
People today if you're riding in anything from a hoopty to a Range
Honk your horn five times as you say, "It's Time For A Change!"

Were it but so simple, Geekguy, were it but so simple. There are still far too many people who hold onto racial prejudices and hatreds. Too many people who I've talked to think that the country will be going to Hell just because we'll soon have a black president. Too many of those same people refuse to shop at certain stores, eat at certain restaurants or go near certain neighborhoods because those places are (and thank God these are not my words) "too dark."
This is a big step for America, and we should all feel proud. But keep in mind that we're not done walking; we've still got quite a ways to go until we can really bury the whole racism issue. Still, I have to say that progress sure feels rather nice.

EvilGenius, the way you and others throw around the term Socialism you're clearly demonstrating that you have no idea what Socialism really is.
The terrorists aren't going to win and the country isn't going to become Socialist just because Democrats won the presidency and a majority in Congress. After all, the US didn't become a magical Capitolist fairytale wonderland and terrorism wasn't eradicated when Republicans had the presidency and a majority in Congress in Bush's first term.
Overall the media averages out to be objective; use enough sources and you can piece together a realistic picture. There are media groups like Fox which obviously slant toward being Conservative, but I guess it's better to ignore that if you're trying to make a claim about unfair advantage. I have to wonder what you mean about the parasites of society, though, because that sounds like an accurate descriptor of the fatcat businessmen and wealthiest 5% of the country who have been given all the tax breaks over the past several years but who haven't put much of anything back into this great nation.
And of course it's always interesting to see the hatred for the "intellectual elite" in the people of this state. The term "intellectual elite" is a sham, by the way. It isn't as if people are born into intellectual prowess; anyone can become intellectual if they want to, it's just a matter of effort. Becoming an "intellectual elite" isn't even as hard as getting rich, you just go to a good school and you learn. There's just this odd, seething hatred from the people who don't make that effort against the people who do. It's curious, but it's also extremely disappointing the way people here are almost bred to hate intellectuals and higher education.
I'm not sure where you picked up the "evil America crap" in anything that I was saying, though. I'll be the first to step up and defend America even though I disagree with what's been done to us by our leaders in the past eight years.
It's foolish to pretend that racism against the various immigrant groups that have and continue to come into this country has vanished. The Irish immigrants have poured their collective souls into the betterment of this country. Still, on a holiday which should celebrate their culture and traditions, St. Patrick's Day, Americans spend the day drinking and telling bawdy, insulting jokes about the Irish, reducing their culture and achievements to shamrocks and green beer. Knowing that my ancestors saw the signs that read "No Irish need apply" and knowing as I grew up seeing my heritage distilled to drunken debauchery and a breakfast cereal mascot has instilled in me the belief that the fight is far from over for all of us. No sir, I say to you that while you may not see it, acknowledge it or realize it, racism is still a problem in this country. That being said, we are making progress, and that is something to be proud of.

EvilGenius, stocks have been jumping up and down erratically for the past month. A sudden rise or fall immediately after the election doesn't prove anything, and only suggest that we're in an economic crisis, which really shouldn't be news to anyone.
You'll have to provide sources for your figures for them to be at all meaningful. I could just as easily make up figures saying that the poorest 1% pay 100% of income taxes, which wouldn't really help anyone in any way. Claims without proof are fairly pointless. Additionally, as Aaron Levenstein once said, "Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital."
Going by that definition of Socialism that you just looked up, Evil, you should have by now realized that the US has already dabbled in the Socialist pond. *Gasp!* We were aleady well on our way to adopting Socialist approaches to certain industries long before Obama was elected. The funny thing is that people are calling his tax and health care ideas Socialist when his plans for those issues are less Socialist than many programs we already have.

The very opinion article you're quoting points out several ways in which the statistics can paint an inaccurate picture. Those statistics also happen to be from 2005, which which gives us three years for those figures to have changed. The miniature timeline also makes it easy to associate the increase in taxes paid with an increase in income earned.
Of course, I could also take a play out of the far-right playbook and claim that the article comes from an obviously biased media outlet, or go even further and say that the statistics released by the Treasury only say what those evil conservative Republicans want us to believe.
The only honest and truthful thing to say, though, is that those statistics only reveal data on one year and don't reveal all of the data available for that year. As ever, statistics are interesting but they are never satisfying.

EvilGenius like I said get over it,if you feel like you could have done a better job why didn't you run for President? I don't depend on the Government to take care of me. I love my job because I worked hard to get where I am and to accomplish everything that I have done. Nothing was given to me, not even this government cheese and milk you speak so fondly of. Oh before I go to bed so I can get up and go to the job that I depend on to take care of me and my son,let me say this....A Change Has Come.....lmao

I took my daughter with me to vote yesterday. She's 5. We talked about civic responsibility and democracy. Never in our conversation did I bring up race. As we watched television in the early evening I realized that to HER, my beautiful hope for the future, there were just 2 men who wanted to be President of the United States. I know that one day I'm going to have to address the issue of race and injustice, bigotry and hate. For now I am perfectly content knowing that even sitting here in my ruby red county in a ruby red state- yesterday I was part of something bigger and better than 1 single person can be. It fills me with hope.

Evil Genius and his ilk have redefined Marxism from what it used to mean to now, where it simply means that you disagree with her or you voted for one for whom Evil Genius disapproves.

Why do we have to be a country with so much hatred? Many of you call yourselves Christians and you say you like blacks. Now you have been tested. If I were to die today or tomorrow I do not want to go to hell for hating someone because the color of their skin. Would we all feel better if we peeled back Obama skin and replace it with white skin? If that is the case then you better be prepared to face God on judgment day. We were all created in our own special way, God does not make mistakes. However, I have read many immature comments on the page from Professors, doctors, clergies, lawyers, teachers, nurses, and every walk of religions. You all should be role models not bigots.

Plain and simple: If you didn't vote for President-Elect Obama because of his race, then you are racist. If you didn't vote for him (honestly) because of his policies, kudos to you. No, he is not the messiah. We have never thought of him as a messiah because we are smarter than to believe that. Nor is he the antichrist as some people have "subtly" suggested. He has gotten so much attention because this is unprecedented and people are happy to see that the U.S. has come this far. Don't let racism takes us back. No one has to leave the country. Just accept it as we have been doing with other Presidents that were not well liked!!!!!!

After reading some of the worst comments ever written on this site, it's soooooo easy to see why so many folks look at South Carolina as one of the most backwards azz states!
It's so difficult to defend the state in which I live, simply because some folks are still living in the stone age where they honestly believe that one race is some what better than the other, simply because of their skin color!
Come on folks, it's 2008, not 1908! They don't see us as black folks, white folks, or asian folks for that matter, they see us as a STATE, AND NOT ONE TO BE PROUD OF AT TIMES, IF I MUST SAY SO MYSELF!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but we DO not have to act like third graders, with the constant name-calling and bickering simply because someone disagree with the next person beliefs.
Last I checked, EVERYONE,not blacks or white, but EVERYONE
bleeds the same color RED.
As we all know, in every election there's a winner and a loser, the majority voted in favor of President Barack Obama, and if nothing else, we all should respect that!

First time stocks drop - largest post election day drop on record. And to think Obama has been touted a savior for the economy yet the people of the market have shown fear. Could it be that he only won because of the masses of people waiting for their opportunity to get free money off the backs of the working people?
THe country will soon be starting the 3rd year of Democratic control of congress. The last 2 years have shown the idiots to be the worst congress in history. However, there is room for CHANGE as their approval was only 18%. That leaves 18% more to go.
Failure = Don't blame me I voted for McCain!

Hightide, you have left a smile on my face. P.S. I'm a woman (I'll go so far as to say a very attractive woman, or so I have been told). Man, I sure hope you're a good-looking man. You sound like my type, and we worked out our "perceived" differences very well, I might add. When's the next tide change?

ONAWHIM,
I must ask you this. Would Barack approve of your comment? If we want to be the change that our President-elect envisions, must we not ask ourselves 'What would Barack do?' every time we are faced with fearful, prejudiced, confused, skeptical or misinformed people? Does your comment not reflect the self-same thought patterns that have contributed to our current problems? Have you already forgotten Barack's speech? 'And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too.'
ONAWHIM---If this chance for change is going to succeed, we must try to remember to ask ourselves WWBD (WHAT WOULD BARACK DO?) before we act or speak.
We must remember Mahatma Gandhi's words: We must become the change we want to see.
