Long lines, patient voters

Some wait up to five hours to cast ballots

A study in patience, soggy and stoic Lowcountry voters endured waits of up to five hours Tuesday to cast their votes in an election many considered the most important of their lifetime.

Most shrugged off the drizzle and delays, saying they were duty-bound to cast their ballots. They opened umbrellas, paged through books, made new friends. The mood remained surprisingly cheerful.

"In some countries you wait this long for toilet paper and bread," said 31-year-old Jeff Yurfest, who waited three hours at Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant.

Voters swarmed to polling places early, some showing up before the poll workers. The line snaked around the corner of Charleston's Burke High School at 5:15 a.m. and stayed steady.

"They were a formidable group, they were to be reckoned with and they didn't stop coming," Burke poll manager Barbara G. Holmes said.

While the lines of voters at Burke had slowed to a trickle by the time polls closed at 7 p.m., other sites were still under siege. At College Park Middle School in Ladson and Goose Creek High School, hundreds of people reportedly still waited to vote more than an hour after polls closed.

Throughout the day, organizational issues and other problems compounded frustrations for voters and poll workers.

More than 70 voters waited in line at West Ashley Middle School, the precinct listed on their registration cards, only to learn that they were actually supposed to vote miles away at the Jewish Community Center. Some grew angry, and police were called. Authorities arranged transportation to get the voters to the proper spot, Eugenia Felder, precinct clerk at the Jewish center said.

Reports also surfaced of College of Charleston students being turned away from some polling places when they presented their student ID cards for identification. That issue was later resolved, College of Charleston Dean of Students Jeri Cabot said.

Several precincts in Charleston County had problems with individual voting machines, including Joseph Floyd Manor in Charleston, where waits approached five hours.

"I've only seen one person drop out," said Gustavious Simmons, who waited four hours to vote.

The problems inspired grumbling, but also good will. At Goose Creek High School, people passed out crackers and water to tired voters. And at the W.L. Stephens Aquatic Center in West Ashley, those enduring a four-hour wait applauded each person who emerged from the building with an "I Voted" sticker.

In downtown Charleston, a young Canadian woman brought chocolate-chip cookies to voters stuck in a three-hour line outside the Moultrie Playground. "I can't vote, so this is how I'll do my part," said Emily Cooney, 25.

While I cannot agree with the poster above on her thoughts on Obama being a terrorist, I voted with McCain; however, I voted Ms. Ketner. I think having a mixed Congress and Executive Branch is the best way to ensure all of us are taken care of.
With McCain's history, I think he would be best - but Henry Brown has got to go. He is a do nothing spender that is dragging our state down.

The above post reflects the tripe that has been pushed this whole campaign. fear of the BLACK MAN, fear of minorities. Well, if that's the case can you imagine how blacks and other minorities must have felt after 232 yrs of elections of white folks?? If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Y'all keep harping on the same crap, for which you have no basis. Riots, communists, gays, black supremacists and abortionists, the boogie men of the 21st Century. I'm white, a Vet and a person who is proud to say he will be voting for OBAMA.

Ashley, just what did you mean by "with divine intervention, maybe we can right the ship in earlier than four years"?
This is a historic day for those of us (and by the way, I'm a white man of Jewish heritage, a veteran, a college grad, and a regular working man with a wife and two young daughters) who believe in a better tomorrow. I am happy that my older daughter understands the gravity of an Obama victory. Those who have been made uncomfortable in having to acknowledge their prejudices during this process have an opportunity to move themselves forward...

WOW. I cannot believe the fear that some people have. Obama is not going to destroy the county, support terrorism, or bring communism to the US. I find that its a lack of complete unstanding of issues and the candidate. I cannot fathom why anyone who is middle class would vote Republican. You want to talk about a party that favors the rich and big buisness. That being said, I do not vote party lines. My problem as of the last decade is that both parties seem to be getting further and further from center. Its becoming battle of the extremist. I would love to have a educated, moderate Rpublican candidate to chose. Unfortunatly the current republican choices are too far right and I am choosing Obama this tima around.

That is one reason why there is a record turnout today! Your republicans have destroyed the democratic way of life. Get used to it!

Be careful what you wish for, very careful. Don't come running for us to fix it when it all goes to hell. The looks of the turnout would seem that free stuff is already being handed out. The mindset of many is that they will be handed everything, and contribute nothing. Most do not see the big picture, what really happens in the end. It is a slippery slope that we would head down if false hope is elected. Most people are too ignorant to do research, or study effects of certain policies. Empty phrases of "change" and "hope" are all they have to live off of. Once your expectations are not met, you will see, and you will suffer.

Ashley Cooper -

Your post is hilarious - I can't think of a better endorsement for Obama / Biden. I think about 90% of readers will read that rant and, like me, say to themselves "this is exactly why I must go vote today - so nut cases like this don't remain in control." Thank you for a great lead off.

On other note - I just voted (in just under 2hrs). For the most part, everyone remained upbeat and patient. However, there were a few individuals who became very impatient and rude with the poll workers. I hope most everyone is expecting to wait a while and remembers to be kind to those who are volunteering to make this great process go smoothly. It's a great day to be an American. Go Obama! God bless the U.S.A.!

Personally I think the comments by Ashley_Cooper are highly inflammatory and designed to influence those who may come to the paper online before going out to vote and for that reason, should be removed.

What Ashley_Cooper seems to be missing is the historic nature of this election on both sides of the isle as with the Republicans, John McCain would be the oldest president in history and Sarah Palin would be the first woman VP, and for the Democrats Obama would be the first African American President and considering the history of our country, just the fact that he is the candidate from a major party shows progress and we as Americans should be proud of that.

At 46 years old, this has been the most interesting and exciting election period of my life. I am amazed at the high level of involvement people are showing this year. People are talking, ranting, cussing, registering and, hopefully, voting.

I don't think McCain or Obama will be a very good President. I also don't think either of them would be a terrible President. Either way, we'll all survive. It can't get much worse than it is now with both the Republican and Democratic parties being ineffective, corrupt and hypocritical. None of the "other" candidates or parties has anything even worth considering.

I'll be voting for McCain after I leave work. His view points on the issues that I consider important most closely resemble my own.

Vote!!!!... or keep your mouth shut for the next 4 years!

Wow folks. Today is the day we make history. No matter who wins. It's pretty exciting and as most of you know I am voting for McCain/Palin. I however believe I have made the decision to vote for DEMOCRAT Bob Conley. I know some of you may feel dizzy or faint reading that. LOL But it just shows that I vote based on whos ideas/beliefs mostly align with mine. Thats how we should all vote. You most likely won't agree with 100% of what any candidate says. I pick the issues that matter most to me and vote accordingly.

Ashley-Cooper says "All the Republicans can hope for is that O and the Democrats, having no one but themselves to blame, screw things up so badly that a surge of conservatism will sweep them away after 4 years and the Republicans will regain control"

That says it all. You would rather have America (and Americans) suffer and be worse off than have your party be out of control. You are wishing for a "screwed up" America? Wouldn't you rather America be stronger regardless of which party gets the credit? Would you be against the U.S. regaining its status as an economic powerhouse, the Islamic extremists exterminated, and the education system tops in the world, if it happened under non-republican control?

No matter who wins, I want the US to be best.

You are not a good American.

I'll be glad when it's over. One thing that I cant stand is the wall street thing being blamed on republicans. The clinton administration put pressure on freddie mac and frannie mae to offer subprime loans as a way togive more people the gift of home ownership. Although more people could get houses and loans, this did cause housing prices to soar. As much as I appreciate that I was able to buy a house despite my shaky credit, I know I paid more, and bought a bigger house, because the interest was lower and its the monthly payment that dictated what price range Im in. I am keeping up with my mortgage, but we live check to check and had to rent it out last year for 6 months. If I loose my job due to the economy, my house may end up in foreclosure like everyone else who is enjoying houses they can barely afford. Easy credit leads to easy spending. You cant blaim that entirely on republicans.

The Republican Party had everything going for them after the 2000 election. They had Congress, the White House, and soon, the Supreme Court. Anything that they wanted to accomplish was relatively easy for them at that point and look at where we are.

Did they secure the borders? No. Instead we have millions of people coming into the country illegally.

Were (are) they serious about winning the war in Iraq? I don't think they even take it seriously considering they cut taxes in a time of war. In the Second World War goods were rationed. Trucks came through neighborhoods to collect scrap metal and raw materials people had lying around. The income taxes were sent sky high to finance the war. The enemy we face today is every bit as dangerous and just as determined and yet most people don't go any further than slapping a sticker on the back of their vehicles.

We're over $10 trillion in debt now. We're running a trade imbalance that's approaching $1 trillion and budget deficits of nearly $400 billion. Things may not improve under Obama, but can you blame people for voting for him?

Today I'm just thankful that we have the freedom to speak openly about our opinions. I am thankful that so many people care so much that they are willing to wait in line to cast their ballot. I am proud to be an American.

Tomorrow, I'll start worrying again about our future...

Exorcist, which grandiose idea would you be referring to? I hope that he will actually be able to do something about education...because as you know, South Carolina is right aruond 49th in the nation. It sure would be nice for our kids to be able to read and write when they graduate. I don't know about you...but, for that grandiose idea, I would be willing to shell out some of my own money.

Actually Mom, I was referring to "all" his plans.

I wouldn't worry to much about being willing to shell out some of your own money.

I would be more worried about how much they allow you to keep.

Agree with Jane. Obama has certainly aligned himself with some really far left radicals. If a conservative candidate had those types of far right connections the left wing news media sometimes known as cbs nbc cnn abc msnbc and others would run hours of stories lies, innuendos and any other trash they could dig up. Its too bad they totally ignored Obama's connections to these radicals and other (Kenya) terrorist regimes. Hugo Chavez says he would like to start talks with the Black man if he is elected. Dont respond by telling me that is what we should do ie talk to the very people who would blow us into the atmosphere if they could come up with a way to pull it off.

Is this a joke? These comments aren't meant to be taken seriously, are they? Listen people... We are all Americans! Having the right to take part in today's election proves that. I am teaching my children not to label themselves as white or black, but Christian! I thank God for this day, I thank God that I live in this country, and I will pray for whom ever wins. That's all we can do! Let our voices be heard by voting, but still stand together united as a country! No matter the outcome! The name calling, and bashing others for the choices they make is not Christian or American! Republican or Dem... This country and the next president will need our prayers and support! We have to join together as Americans for our KIDS sakes!

Not Ayers. I'll say it again, using small words so you'll understand: Ayers, while a dirt bag and a terrorist (a big word, but I know you know that one) was never convicted of a felony.

You, Jane. It's like reading words typed out by a retarded orangutan. Sorry... that was a big word. I'll use "monkey."

You really think Obama isn't a citizen born in the U.S? You think he pals around with Odinga and is politically aligned with him?

(Speaking of Odinga - he claims that he and Obama are distant cousins. While that has not shown to be true, it is true that Obama and Cheney are distant cousins. Hopefully, the Cheney gene and the Odinga gene anhiliated each other.)

So here'e the big question: months and years from now, when the U.S. has NOT been overrun by wild black Muslim Kenyans performing abortions and stealing our guns, will Jane admit she was wrong? My bet is that, like a retarded orangutan, she will have forgotten all about the previous day and will be slinging her own feces in another direction.

Jane, If what you are saying is found to be true... I have faith in God and this country that corrective steps will be taken. It is times like these that will serve as a test of our faith in Him. This is our country's voting process. Many do not agree, but I would much rather have my say than to be told who my president is and having to deal with it. I have two teens that are both divided on who they feel should be president. I allowed them to debate (without name calling or bashing) because it is what America is about. I did not tell them who I voted for until today, because I did not want to influence. Like it or not, people, this is our process! I've gotta tell ya, it's a lot better than others. I have been an active voter for as long as I could vote... Some have gone my way, and others have not! Through it all, I've prayed it out. Don't allow your fears to overcome your faith!

You have to wonder why most real, reputable news agencies would decline to carry most of the stories that people circulate as negative points about Obama. Sure, it's easy enough to write them off as signs of the liberal media, and it's easy enough to sling accusations left and right about the media being in Obama's pocket. Then again, there's always the very real and logically sound possibility that most of these rumors and allegations are either completely untrue or wholly insignificant.

Sure, Obama worked with Ayers about a decade ago... on a school reform board. Significant? No. And most of the other suggested ties between the two men are either made up nonsense or are blown severely out of proportion. Sure, Obama knows a scholar and expert on the Middle East who may have been critical of Israel, but any alleged association other than the fact that their kids know each other and they went to the same party is hardly important. Obama has also associated with many, many politicians who are well-liked, but no one talks about those associations because they don't sound scary and mysterious when referred to in vague, hushed tones.

Concerning the citizenship issue, I highly doubt that there was a vast conspiracy put into effect almost immediately after Obama's birth on the off chance that he might someday get into politics and then might somehow run for President. I also highly doubt that anyone in the US Government just forgot to think about any citizenship doubts about Obama until the few weeks before the election. The citizenship issues that are being raised are just last-minute, last-ditch attempts at smearing a candidate, plain and simple. The lawyer working the case is well known as a nutjob who brings up frivolous cases.

Really, if you can't trust one news outlet then you can't trust any. Any accusation you lob against one outlet for being pro-Obama while you hold up your favorite outlet that reports negative things about Obama can just as quickly be turned around to suggest that your favorite news outlet is pro-McCain.

The best advice is to get your news from a variety of sources, educate yourself and look into all of the wild, spurious claims that each campaign makes. Use uninvolved, third-party resources like Snopes.com and Factcheck.org to get to the truth of the matters. Don't just blindly follow what your favorite news source, political party, church, school, family or any other group tells you to do or think.

It is easy to discern that most those posting here are baby boomers.

Few if any remember blackouts, shortages, rationing, and air raid drills, that were routine and although those in actual war zones really suffered, it did not make the discomfort at home any more tolerable.

The post war boom created an attitude of complacency and a new set of priorities encouraged in great part by forward thinking enemies of this country.

The left, capitalizing on the injustices visited upon colored people in the past, promoted feelings of white guilt.
This created an owe me attitude in many colored people and an equal amount of resentment in white people who felt like they had no part in what happened in the past.

The end result is division and a myopic outlook when it comes to politics which will be the major reason why so many will vote for Obama.

Most blacks and a lot of whites are voting for Obama because of his skin color, many others will vote against him for the same reason.
Both groups are equally irresponsible.

This man is dangerous. He is a long time devotee of Marxist socialism and those who make light of it do so out of ignorance or to try and discredit their detractors.

When asked by a journalist in Florida if the old Marx tenet of "from those according to their ability ,to those according to their need", was not the same as Obama's spreading the wealth around idea, Joe Biden grinned and asked the journalist if she were serious.

She was, and the Obama campaign ordered a cessation of interviews with that station.

Those working toward this end have worked long and hard to get to this point and they are not going to let a little thing like truth get in the way.

If Obama gets elected it will be because very few of us have taken the time to study the events that have put him in the forefront as a political heavyweight.

Hopefully I'll be proven wrong about my concerns of Obama ascending to the presidency.

thisguy wants reasons to vote for Obama in his 3:57 PM post:

1. Economy - neither candidate is fiscally conservative, so I vote for the guy who, for my tax bracket, will cost me less.

2. Iraq - Knows we need to get out and refocus on Afganistan; it's the major drain on our economy and the reason for our budget deficit.

3. Standing in the world - Our reputation in the world is soiled because of Bush/Cheney. We need an eloquent, charismatic, intelligent leader to repair our international reputation.

4. Palin - not bright enough to run my household, nevermind my government. Believes in creationism and abstinence only.

5. Stresses the importance of education and the sciences.

6. Social - a break from the religious right. Pro-choice, Pro-gay rights, pro-science.

7. More likely to promote alternative energy development.

McCain could have had my vote if not for Palin. Think he would have been a big step up from Bush. But in the end, for the reasons I've listed, I think Obama will be better for America.

I voted for McCain because I beleive that Obama has big ideas but no way of approaching them. Candy is easy to sell to children, so him saying what sounds good is what sways people the easiest.

His health care reform is ridiculous! Im in the medical field and any of his ideas to "take the responsibility from the insurance companies" is utterly stupid! If only it was that easy, it would be nice.

Abortion ~ Im completely against abortion! Why? Many women use it as birth control and it seems as though our race is being treated like dogs and cats. So what if it has a beating heart, if we dont want it, kill it, right? WRONG! I know that there are situations to where it may be warranted, but there are not enough regulations for abortion to keep just anyone from having one FOR BIRTH CONTROL REASONS.

Obama doesn't have enough experience, bottom line. I am not crazy about either candidate, but for my beliefs, McCain comes closer than Obama.

I gave Obama a chance and I was going to vote on him, but he seemed to change his mind often and didn't seem to come up with answers quickly or at all.

No matter who wins, I really do hope that they can turn this economy around. That is what matters to me most.

Unlike many of the posters on this board, I wish the next President success. Also, my candidate, if he should win, does not get a "pass" from me on the issues, just because I voted for him.

ForPnC's Christmas morning analogy is both funny and on the mark!

GetSerious, such elitist pomposity from one so base.
I am far from angry. In fact I enjoy the hell out annoying clowns like you. Son? If your old enough to call me son you are one very old sucker, or your like one of my close friends who is six years my junior and calls me son on occasion when his brain is in idle mode.

Let me fill you in on something else.

Were it not for my my children, grand children, and great grand children, I would probably not be so "vocal" in my opposition to the coronation of Obama.
Neither his confiscatory tax or gun grabbing policies will affect me, since I many years ago prepared for just such idiocy that is taking our country by storm.

You no doubt will suffer as a result of your blind devotion to ignorance. Get serious, grow up!

I am noticing a strong correlation between states ranked near the bottom in education and those going for McCain. This same correlation also exists for more religious states and lower education (SC and Mississippi are two of the most religious states in the union).

Nothing wrong with McCain, by the way, or Obama. I just wonder how many preachers convinced their flocks that Obama was the antichrist.

At any rate, based on comments above, the fear messages about communism, antichrist, Muslim terrorists, etc. played quite well in our little state.

------------------------------------------------------------

Is this perhaps the last trickling of the us vs them, divisive, exclusionist, racist rantings of this campaign? Here we have the suggestion that the vast majority of American voters HATE America.

So what if Obama tried a drug - I'm sure that everyone has at least tried something in their lifetime that was not good. Point is that if you didn't get ADDICTED to it and turned from it, then you are fine. Just b/c I smoked marjunia and drank during my college days doesn't mean that I'm not qualified to get a good job - making the supervisor rank at a young age.

Your problem with strange and deviant sexual fantasy's rearing its ugly head again. You will fit right into the world created by the Socialists running Congress.

Do you think you will qualify for some of their trickle down welfare?

GetSerious; Now that it appears that Obama will be our next president I can cease and desist with this little game.
Like it or not he is our president and it is incumbent on all Americans to recognize that fact and make the best of it.

The news that Graham, Brown, and Clyburn have been re-elected and not held accountable for their votes, stances and bills is sad in that it shows that we really don't want change here in South Carolina. We could have lead the country and directed Congress to follow a path of true conservatism and austerity but South Carolina has caved in and collapsed like a wet, soapy rag. We rage that we need to throw the bums out and it is no wonder our country and Congress are in such a dark mess when it never happens. When amnesty and bailouts and liberal polices proliferate our future I will not have been tainted by voting for Graham or Brown.
