Mount Pleasant targets junked boats

The Post and Courier
Sunday, November 2, 2008

— On Friday, Hobcaw Creek was littered with abandoned sailboats and a sunken cabin cruiser. But that wasn't the worst of it. The shallows near Crab Bank, a protected bird rookery in Charleston Harbor, looked like a recreational vessel junkyard.

"Being born and raised around here, it just breaks my heart to see this happening," said Town Councilman Gary Santos. "It's a shame."

Santos said he thinks hard times are a factor. "They just can't afford them (boats) any more so they take them out here. With the economy the way it is, more and more people are looking to do this sort of thing," he said.

A proposed town ordinance makes abandoning a vessel an offense that can result in a fine of up to $1,000 and 30 days in jail. Monday, the Police, Judical and Legal Committee will consider adopting an abandoned boat law.
