Rep. Norton speaks of ironic S.C. ties

D.C. politician tells NAACP banquet audience how area representative blocked D.C.'s self-government

Jena fueling new rights movement, Waters says, published 09/22/07

Though she's the third generation of her family to live in Washington, D.C., U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton feels a special connection to North Charleston.

No, she never lived there. But she has a distinct memory of a past U.S. representative, the late John McMillan, whose House district included the area. And as chair of the District of Columbia Committee, he kept her home town from getting self-government.

"John McMillan and his kind not only deprived many of you of your rights, but he reached up" through the South, Norton said during a keynote speech Friday night at the North Charleston NAACP's 24th annual Freedom Fund Banquet. "His fellow Southerners were responsible for the continued segregation of the District of Columbia."

Empowered by the 1965 Voting Rights Act, black voters in South Carolina helped deny the Democrat re-election in 1972. Soon after that, Washington, D.C., started gaining the ability to govern itself, though it still lacks congressional voting rights. Its license plates read "Taxation without Representation."

Ironically, Norton said, she now belongs to the same party whose members supressed her rights. Furthermore, South Carolina's own Jim Clyburn, the House Majority Whip, now represents the same portion of the state as McMillan did, give or take some redistricting lines.

Norton was speaking to more than 100 members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's North Charleston branch at the Sheraton Convention Center near Montague Avenue and Interstate 26.

She has represented the District of Columbia during nine terms in Congress. She is an advocate of statehood for the District. Though she is allowed to vote in committee, she cannot cast votes on the House Floor. In addition to holding elected office, she is a lawprofessor at Georgetown University who has written widely on civil rights and labor issues.

Excitement bubbled among a crowd comprised of many members mature enough to have lived through the Civil Rights movement. In days, they would see whether the United States would elect its first black president, as voters chose between Democratic U.S. Sen. Barack Obama and Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain.

"African-Americans in this room have not only lived history," she said, "you have been history."

Her House seat has given her a front-row view of the political arena. A vocal Obama supporter, Norton worried that complacency or overconfidence could cause some voters to turn away when they see long lines at the polls on Tuesday.

"The line is never too long — we've been waiting in line for 400 years," she said. "Don't talk about how our time has come, it may never come."

You are a DISGUSTING RACIST PIG to say the least. Yes Black Americans helped to make America the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave! There's nothing BRAVE about a RACIST COWARD like you! Speaking of handouts, Did it ever occur to YOU an YOUR RACIST type that you will find MORE POOR WHITE TRASH on WELFARE an receiving HAND OUTS than more Blacks or other minorities in this country? Try digesting that to start!

Like baseball it's a game of percentages and I would like to see the percentage of the black community on public assistance, government programs, fatherless families, their young men in prison, etc. reduce so you wouldn't hear the likes of Cracker. But I'm afraid the poverty pimps and socialists depends on the misery index for their power and control over the black community. With the possibility of Barack Obama becoming president I don't expect dignity to be restored in the black community in my life time.

Some people preach and swear by the "Constitution" until it does not suit them. Amazing how two faced they can be. The Constitution did not give DC the right to voting representation in Congress. DC is not a state, it is a city No, to be exact, a "district," whatever a district is! Does not matter. The Constitution gave voting rights to citizens who reside in "states." No one made any one live in DC. Move a mile or two to Maryland or Virginia and vote all you want. Give DC the right to vote, and I can see it now- Mr speaker, the entire congressional committee from Spankyville votes . . . . .

So now we have our morning Dose of obama Socialist Democrat LIES and fear mongering.

1. Any person living in any state in the USA, if they can raise support from other citizens, can run for Congress.

2. Washington, D.C. is not a State.

3. No one put a gun to anyone's head and forced them to live in Washington D.C.

4. The Socialist Liberal Democrat controlled Congress has had since 2006 to correct the problem by moving D.C. into a surrounding State. They have done nothing for the good of all Americans, as usual.

5. Obama is a "PATHOLOGICAL LIAR" and Socialist, who is unfit to run for such a high office.

Tulane75...

Your liberalism is bankrupt.

An individual is unique and like in card game each is dealt with their own set of cards. What's different about the card game analogy is that you don't have to go through life with a losing hand all the time. We deal with challenges, adversities, obstacles, etc., all the time. To succeed in life you need a plan. The individual will need to stick to that plan. Find out what it takes to succeed. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the individual so that he or she will realize their full potential. At times the individual will fall down, get disappointed, get sidetrack in life and will need support. That is why the family is so important. The church and friends are also important to the individual.

My parents were poor and I'm sure they didn't like it but they dealt with it. They live within their means. My parents didn't have any vices like drugs or alcohol. They were religious even though my father didn't go to church. There was no welfare in those days so whatever problems they had in the marriage they had to deal with them and deal with them they did. In the end it was worth it. It was a dysfunctional family at times but they were there for the support we needed and that what's important.

The government can not take the place of the family nor can you pour money into a problem to make it disappear. The community needs to strengthen the family and break this cycle of misery. The government can help by protecting the freedom and liberties of the individual but it is still up to the individual to develop his or her value that the individual will bring to the community.

Have a nice day.

Since you are stating your basis for hating Obama. Here's my basis for supporting him:

1. Intelligence (Sorely lacking the last 8 years in our present president.)

2. Calm and Rational (Isn't all over the map like his challenger, who can't even come up with a good message. The only message he has now is "Joe the UNLICENSED plubmer" who is about to laugh all the way to the bank. Good Job Joe! Only in America.

3. Supports the middle class. (And for those of you who think he is giving money to the poor, the EARNED INCOME CREDIT, that gives money to people who don't pay taxes, was started by and re-enacted by republicans.)

4. Wants to end the war in Irag. (We are spending 10 billion a month when Iraq has a 70 billinon surplus. He wants to send more troops to Afghanistan where Bin Laden, remember him, is believed to be, who Bush vowed to kill, but never even talks about any more.)

5. Wants to restore America's standing in the world. (Already seems like he has that following.)

6. Is a Christian with a family. (Research McCain's family life - cheating on his wife, divorced.)

7. I agree with his views on abortion. (A woman's right to decide what's best for her. Let God be the judge.)

8. Tax cuts for the middle class. (Not more corporate welfare.)

9. Health plan is better than McCain's.

10. Energy (Wants to invest in alternatives that will ease our dependence on foreign oil that will help our national security.)

11. Investment in Early Education, more teachers + higher pay and holding educators accountable.

Enough for now.

Do you, Mr. Obama, take us all to be sheep? These people will never pay these taxes. Once in power you will keep the vast American Middle Class enslaved with ever higher taxes. You will throw a few crumbs to the poor Brothers and Sisters

While the same can be said for a lot of blacks supporting Obama. I am not one of them. So what she lives in housing projects, does that mean he doesnt love her? Hell no it doesnt. Talk about hypocrites, yall are getting ridiculious with these retarded accusations against this man. No it doesnt because it happened in the past and none of us are perfect. We all have done things we arent proud of. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

preachlove, or maybe you should change it preachhate and fear, I looked it up on the official web site for the government agency that administers it........

"The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) sometimes called the Earned Income Credit (EIC), is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families. Congress originally approved the tax credit legislation in "1975" in part to offset the "burden" of social security taxes and "to provide an incentive to work". When the EITC exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit.

To qualify, taxpayers must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, "even if they did not earn enough money" to be obligated to file a tax return.

The EITC has no effect on certain welfare benefits. In most cases, EITC payments will not be used to determine eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food stamps, low-income housing or most Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) payments."...

Now with the LIES your master, Obama the Socialist, gave you to spread and I quote your words ..."Let me reiterate and you can look it up - these crumbs were started by republicans. So YOUR tax money was taken by republicans".

You owe an apology to all normal, hard working Americans and we are willing to wait until your Hell freezes over to get it.

A by-product of the Democrat Party ban on drilling for oil, where there is oil, is to help drive the price up.

When the oil price goes up the obscene profits earned by the Socialist Democrat Leaders in Congress, heavily invested in oil, goes up.

preachlove - Look Deacon, the Republicans worked hard to create something to help the poor and needy pull themselves up, in spite of the Democrat Party trying to keep them in slavery. You and your master try to turn it into something, Black, Dirty and Sleazy...

I repeat my earlier point, you owe an apology to all normal, hard working Americans and we are willing to wait until your Hell freezes over to get it.

..NoBama-08.....Obama says "Bill of Rights, Bill of Rights, we don't need no stinking, Bill of Rights!"

The latest lead is 9pts. Some are saying Mccain is going to concede defeat tomorrow evening to save time and money.

Plus, if word gets out that Cindy is back on the pills, well let's just say Johnny's chances aren't good...

He has no control of his campaign,

other war vets don't support him,

he's lied and cheated on his wife,

he's been involved in corruption that has cost the taxpayers BILLIONS.

How you folks can support this empty suit, this liar, it beyond me.

Tell me GetSerious, did your Master Obama send you these lies to spew out or did you make them up all by yourself.

HEY RIPTARD- when you're done being a dork, do some research and you'll find that 8 of 10 of the wealthiest cities have Democratic leadership.

â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'â-'

The Democrat Leadership always get richer, crime flourishes, taxes go up to astronomical heights and the average citizen always suffers.

DC denizens ARE people "of the several states". We are not people of the Argentinian pampas, nor of the African savannahs, nor the Asian steppes, nor the European heartland. We belong to this country in the sense of being full and equal members, not in the sense of chattel property!

All of us are included in the "Posterity" of which our forefathers spoke when they pledged their Lives, their Fortunes and their Sacred Honor to secure Liberty for Themselves and their Posterity.

If our origins do not trace to Maryland, then they trace to one of the other states. True expatriates are at the least allowed to vote in the state of their last residence. The gold standard for representation in each of the United States is that each citizen may select one congressperson and two Senators to represent him or her. That is the standard which we aspire in DC as well. Equality, Nothing More. Equality, Nothing Less.

The Constitution originally counted non-whites as only three-fifths of a person...(All men are created equal?).

The Constitution originally denied non-whites the right to vote...(All men are created equal?)

The Constitution originally denied women the right to vote...(All men are created equal?)

The Constitution originally denied young adults of military draft age the right to vote...(All men are created equal?)

If the Constitution denies DC residents the right to vote, what can I say except...(All men are created equal?) it is wrong and needs to be changed!

As a DC denizen, I have to point out the following: The United States Congress is not really our Congress, since we have had neither voice nor vote in it for over 200 years; the United States Supreme Court (and other Federal courts) are not really our courts, since we have had no say in their operations, their officers, nor the laws they impose on us, for over 200 years; The United States Constitution is not really even our Constitution, since we have had no say in Amendments 12-27.

We have not left this country, we have been forced out. But it is still our country, and we demand to be allowed in! Government Without Consent as imposed on DC is illegitimate, unjust, and tyrannical.

I must also point out that it is not in the hands of DC residents to decide whether we will be allowed an equal vote. That decision is in the hands of our fellow countrymen. A decent respect to the opinions of mankind (and perhaps more importantly, to the fundamental principles on which this nation was founded) requires redress of this injustice. We continue to wait for America to fully live up to the true meaning of its Creed.
