McCain outraises Obama in S.C.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain has bested Democratic rival Barack Obama by a 3-2 ratio as far as raising money in South Carolina, but Obama has raised slightly more in the Charleston area.
McCain has netted almost $2.3 million in the Palmetto State, while Obama has raised $1.4 million, according to the Web site OpenSecrets.org.
Both sums represent a tiny fraction of their overall fundraising, where Obama has a commanding lead, $639 million to $360 million.
McCain outraised Obama by about a 2-1 ratio in several South Carolina metro areas, including Greenville-Spartanburg, Florence, Myrtle Beach, Sumter and Columbia.
Obama raised $546,949 in the Charleston area, slightly more than the $524,320 raised by McCain.
Obama also bested McCain in the Charlotte metro area, which includes part of South Carolina.
Obama netted $1.17 million there, compared with $650,891 for McCain. Polls show Obama has a much better shot at winning North Carolina Tuesday than winning in South Carolina.
While most experts may think that peninsular Charleston south of Calhoun Street is solidly GOP turf, Obama actually out-raised McCain in the 29401 ZIP code $137,305 to $89,960.
Obama also edged out McCain by $9,233 in the 29464 ZIP code, which includes Mount Pleasant's oldest neighborhoods.
More money was donated to presidential candidates from those two ZIP codes than any others in the state. The third and fourth most generous ZIP codes were in the Columbia area, while the fifth most is 29455, which includes Johns, Kiawah and Seabrook islands.
McCain raised $104,656 from that ZIP code, compared to $47,462 for Obama.
