School board chair: Language 'sets us back'
Charleston County School Board Chairman Hillery Douglas condemned on Tuesday night the profane comments made by board member Arthur Ravenel Jr. supposedly in reference to Superintendent Nancy McGinley.

Five board members confirmed last week that McGinley described recently a situation in which Ravenel told an employee that he had gotten rid of one "bitch" and would get rid of another, referring to former Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson and McGinley.
"We absolutely reject this kind of threatening and discriminatory language," Douglas said while reading a prepared statement at the board meeting. "It sets us back, not forward, and sends the wrong message, especially to women, about the importance of treating everyone with respect."
Ravenel initially denied but later admitted to using the word "bitch," although he said he does not remember the context in which he used the word. He also maintains that he did not threaten McGinley's job.
Douglas said on Tuesday that there is no debate about what happened.
"The facts are well established and documented," he said. "We know that a board member, in speaking openly to staff at district headquarters, used a demeaning and discriminatory term to describe the superintendent. He did this not once, but twice. And he threatened the superintendent's job, saying she'd be history if she didn't put something on the agenda."

After Douglas read the statement, no board member said anything and the meeting continued with its scheduled agenda. Board members said Ravenel was not feeling well and he was not at the meeting on Tuesday. He could not be reached for comment afterward.
McGinley confirmed on Tuesday that she told the board about the incident and said she thought the board took it seriously and appreciated members' support. She would not say what she thought of Ravenel's comments, other than they "speak for themselves."
She didn't think there was any value in continuing to go back and forth about the details of what happened and said she wanted to put the focus where it should be — education.
"It's unfortunate this had to occur," she said, referring to what Ravenel said and that it became public.
Ray Toler was one of the board members who was with Ravenel when he went to the district office to see whether the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science was on the board's agenda. Ravenel said he got frustrated when the issue wasn't on the agenda.
Toler didn't say anything after Douglas read the statement and said after the meeting that he didn't know Douglas was going to talk about the incident.
"I didn't feel a need to (say anything)," he said. "I think the sooner it goes to bed, the better it will be."
Toler said again on Tuesday that he did not hear Ravenel use the word "bitch" and that this story has been created in an effort to discredit Ravenel. He said board members who weren't at the district office with Ravenel were wrong.
Board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook, who also was with Ravenel and Toler at the time of the remarks, was not at the board meeting. Like Toler, Cook said again on Tuesday that she never heard Ravenel use the word "bitch." She said she didn't want to talk about what was said at the board meeting because she wasn't there.

-- The Charleston County School Board agreed 5-2 on Tuesday night to begin the process to revoke the charter for Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter School, a new charter school for at-risk students.
Charter school officials have two weeks to request an appeal hearing. If the school does not make the request, it could be shut down. Board members Brian Moody and Ray Toler were the dissenting votes.
-- The board also hired interim principal Adrian Busch as principal of St. John's High School, and St. Andrews School of Math and Science's Kevin Conklin to be the new principal of Belle Hall Elementary in Mount Pleasant.
-- The school board agreed to hire new district staff attorney John Emerson and pay him $145,000 annually.

Clearly Cousin Arthur's comments were a result of poor judgement and I'm sure he regrets that the truth came out.
My question is whether or not his poor judgement was because he was in a drug induced state? Has he been partying with Thomas before he goes to the house?

Wow can you imagine the words that flew when he heard the state was investigating his coke sniffing son? Bet it sounded just like a Randy Scott phone call from jail. Something like, "I'll have your job", "do you know who I am"...etc. Our politiicans are for themselves. "you be for me and I'll be for you" was a scam.

Maybe it took Ravenel's little hissy to:
1. draw in some media attention since some do like to get this type of behavior out there
2. get the CCSD board back on track and focused on what they should be doing and worrying about in the first place!!
3. rally parents/public support for the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science that was not on the agenda
4. prove a point to other members who would not agree
5. who knows anymore~ but IMO, the CCSD board members sure do love drama when it comes to the he said/she said~ he did/she did!!!!

He should have that position on the school board. Our state needs to join the world, we are not thecenter of the universe. I do not blame the politicians,

Do other county, city, and state-employed attorneys get paid $145,000 each year? Or is CCSD shelling out more money than necessary for this guy?
I get that he's a higly educated lawyer, but the whole point of government work is to do the same work for for more frustration and beauracracy and less pay, right? At least that is what the rest of us do!!!

While I do not condone Mr. Ravenel's actions, in fairness to him, this Louisiana Style of running things is sort of old news on the CCSD Board. See http://couriercritic.blogspot.com/200... and http://couriercritic.blogspot.com/200... for example. Read the comments to these articles also.
Apparently, Mr. Douglas can also get a little testy when things do not go his way.
I am told that this sort of thing also goes on in Dorchester County where citizens are shouted down at public meetings told to sit down and shut up by school board members, cursed at by school board members, and even banned from meetings. But, I have no first hand knowledge of whether this is all true.

Goodloe left because of the pay, she and McGinnley are of the new breed of Adminstrators that are more than willing to cut and run if the price is right, her move was in no way linked to a a desire to work in a a place "where she could do her job". She wasnt content on being a school superintendent she was into empire building and Im sure her stay in Seattle will be short lived once they start to see she is just a flim flam artist..

This issue is over and done with, why dredge it up again, unless Hillary needed a little attention himself. He was not there and should not make any kind of statement about what did or did not happen.
I have met Mr. Ravenel on several occasions and while I find him to be an honest, down to earth and geniune person, I do not find the language acceptable yet I can understand his anger over something that was supposed to be on the agenda 2 or 3 meetings ago and was still left off. Don't forget, these people are elected to look out for the interest of our children and it seems that he was/is the only one willing to stand up and say something when it is not right.

This is not about being thin or thick skinned. This isn't about "colorful language".
This is about having respect for yourself and your constituents. When those in management/authority behave poorly in front of lower echelon, it sets a bad precedent.
Mr. Ravenel embarrassed himself, the school board and those who elected him to that position.
I have no problem with him disagreeing with Dr. McGinley. In fact, that is the board's purpose to oversee and guide the School District administration.
However justified was his frustration, he did not have the right to make a mockery of his position by acting out the way he did. He only reinforced the "Bumbling Southern Hick" stereotype.

Dr. McGinley appears to be committed to staying in Charleston and making this thing work, Ravenel threatened her job (using the bitch word really doesn't matter to me) plain and simple. Do we really want to go through yet another superintendent change? I guess if it's ok for our schools to have their principals changed 5 times in 3 years then he figures it's ok for the superintendent's position to be revolving too. It takes time for change to prove successful, don't push her out so soon! I disagree with co-workers periodically, but I don't threaten their jobs. Grow up cuz!

Charleston or Seattle? Tough choice. NOTTTTTT!! She's getting paid MORE and I can't say I've done the research but I'll go out on a limb and say it is a BETTER school district. I get to go out on that limb because I grew up with the bickering and soap opera drama that follows CCSD. I never knew what purpose Arthur served in being on the board anyway.

There's always been drama with that school board and the superintendent as long as I remember...the school board and the constituents are NEVER happy. I would hardly classify those in the superintendent position as "political operators", they are almost always former educators, sometimes beginning as teachers and at best they are brave souls to take on the monumental task of dealing with the continual bickering of the Charleston County School District powers that be.

When will the voters of Charleston County wake up and realize the School Board is a representation of the voters commitment to public education. Hadenough, I would say your comment was more "offensive" than "ignorant" but let's just say it was both. Comparing a person's posts on here to a mentally challenged character/actor off a TV show is both offensive (to the person as well as mentally challenged persons) and ignorant(because well, who would make such a comparison and then inquire as to why it was offensive in the first place).
Now, if you need any more explanation as to why that comment was both offensive and ignorant, that's more than I can deal with at this time, since it has more to do with the sort of person you are.

People, People, People, now you have your bridge and the hard work is done, you want his name to disappear? You know that is an old record. He and Julia worked for years to get a Republican Party (2 party system) working and guest who came in when success was there and took over, The Good Old Boys From the Dixicrat party. He has served the County & State and now he is an old man. Be gone? He did a favor for me when he was in Washington that no one else could and it saved my messed up life. He can get upset when things don't get done right, but when the chips are down, he is there...I do believe he called me a bitch once, but maybe I was. If he had recommended this lady for the job, he expects excellence and obviously she did not produce. I notice no one mentioned Thomas's mother or the rest of his family in all of his problems, she was there, the grandparent were there, brothers and sisters were there and Arthur was away doing your business most of Thomas's life. Thomas made a mistake as do most young people today. He and his father have faced it, so get on with it. They are both productive people and god knows the world needs them. Be glad you do not have my County Council or School Board, everyone resigns or are fired at least every month in televised screaming fits.

But I have to point out a few things: 1) Thomas Ravenel is NOT a young man he is 45 years old. 2) He didn't make a mistake, he broke the law many times over and needs to suffer the consequencs like most people his age and younger are forced to do, he wasn't just using drugs he was doing much more 3) I will never "get on with it" about the stupid decisions that our elected officials make and finally Arthur Ravenel is never excused for calling someone a "bitch". That is unacceptable. And so is your rant making excuses for this family.

It's ashamed the profanity was used; Ravenel should not have done that. At the same time I think his frustration over an item that needed to be on the meeting agenda not being there (more than once) is understandable. Ravenel was being stonewalled on an important issue, and I commend him for insisting that it be should be included and looking out for this constituent's interests. Many have lost sight of that part of this story.
We seem to have become a society completely unwilling to forgive human transgressions. This, coupled with the differing accounts of what actually occured, make me question Hillery's motives in resurrecting this story.

No I am not a man of God. I am however a woman of God (like all women are), from South Carolina...born and raised...who lives in NYC. (Deac=Demon Deacons, the mascot of my alma mater).
1)Being young may be relative to you, but it isn't to me...he's practically a middle-aged man who should know better. People on this board are more than willing to condemn people more less than half his age for less. People should be held accountable, especially 45 year old elected officials. Just because you have sons who are older makes no difference.
2) I didnt say anything about the bridge, though I agree its weird to name anything after someone when they are still living and Under NO circumstance should he be calling a woman that word.

I work in Dorchester District 2 and things are handled very professionally. I am pulling my kids out of Charleston county and taking them to DD2 where they spend more time and effort on the students and less on the CRAP!! CCSD needs to get a clue. The students should come first and in CCSD they seem too interested in all the BS and not the students. I am appalled at how CCSD has become a circus!! Shame on you CCSD.

All Bill Gates's talks about lately is that he is having to bring in Engineers from other countries to do his work. Is that what you all want? Big paying jobs going to foreigners. If I were Ravenel, I would throw my arms in the air and say do it yourselves. He does not need the power, the money or the headache...certainly not all this blather...

While not the norm, I have a friend who want from St.Andrews High school in '84 to MIT and graduated with honors with a degree in electrical engineering. One of my classmates went from St. A in 81 to Harvard and finished with honors.
