Sanford asks Bush to help protect reefs

COLUMBIA — Gov. Mark Sanford is asking President Bush to declare deep sea coral reefs off the Southeast coast a marine national monument.

Supporters say the designation would protect the reefs, which stretch from Florida to North Carolina and are about 100 miles off the coast.

In a letter sent to Bush on Wednesday, Sanford says the reefs are a national treasure on par with Yosemite Valley.

Scientists say many of the reefs are thousands of years old and create a unique ecosystem.

The Environmental Defense Fund called Sanford's support of the monument visionary.

White House spokeswoman Kristen Hellmer says she doesn't know if the president's experts have reviewed the letter but says Bush is committed to ocean conservation.

Some drilling is long overdue. Look at the large undersea oil field in the gulf off the West coast of Florida. The powers that be are currently preventing us from extracting that oil. At the the same time, Cuba is selling drilling rights to the same pocket of oil just South of where our rigs would be located. Now we will have substandard rigs off our coast extracting that oil which we will likely be buying from whatever country instead of recovering it ourselves on a much safer platform, and, at a much lower cost (both in dollars and to the local sea life.

Sometimes I think liberals won't be happy until this country falls, just so they can say "See? I told you this would happen!"
