The Green Heron
Some travel far-flung distances, lured by the temptations at Sullivan's Island: Sweet potato fries and fish tacos from Off the Hook; the Tell-Tale Heart burger, a molten mix of fried egg, bacon and cheddar from Poe's Tavern; Guinness draught from Dunleavy's Pub.
Torrid vixens, yes.
But if one can escape their call, then one might venture farther down the beach to find The Green Heron Grocery, a proper seaside market.
This is an all-in-one beach shop, folks. They've got it all.
Groceries? Of course. Advil? Check. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups? Uh-huh. Smirnoff Ice? Yep. One of those monogrammed caps to remember your trip (Hint: the "SI" ain't for Smirnoff Ice)? Si, senor.
They've also got a dandy, little lunch counter, serving eats appropriate for beach-combing or unwinding at one of the Green Heron's two outdoor tables.
Most of the sandwiches cost $6-$7, including chicken salad, tuna salad and a sufficient turkey reuben. A traditional Italian costs $6.35 for a 6-inch, $9.95 for a 12-inch.
We sampled a turkey sub with Swiss, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, salt and peppers, impressed by an impossibly soft roll.
Hot dogs are available plain ($2.50), with kraut ($2.85) and chili ($3), as well as pizza baguettes on toasted, crunchy flatbread. They come in three options, cheese, pepperoni and the works with onions, banana peppers, jalapenos and melted mozzarella.
The Green Heron also makes house salads, Greek salads and root beer floats, and serves bagels, croissants, muffins, hot tea and coffee for breakfast.
Shaved ice makes the perfect beach-side accompaniment. Choose from several flavors. We love the classics, so cherry, please.
