Authorities make ID, arrest in woman’s slaying; announcements later today

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, May 21, 2008

— Berkeley County officials plan to announce today the name of a woman found slain near U.S. Highway 17A as well as the name of a man being charged with killing her.

A bicyclist who found the remains in some woods between Cypress Gardens and Oakley roads on Monday morning has been arrested in the case, said Dan Moon, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office public information officer. The man’s name and the charges against him are expected to be revealed at a 4 p.m. press conference. Deputies were questioning him earlier this week.

The Coroner’s Office also expected to release the slain woman’s identity, Moon said. An autopsy on Tuesday showed that the woman had been killed, but officials would not say how they think it happened, citing their continuing investigation.

Earlier, coroner’s officials said they would need to submit DNA tests to confirm the woman's identity. They expected those results to take anywhere from a few days to a month.

Officials from the Coroner’s Office estimated the body had been in the area at least 10 days, possibly two weeks.

A 45-year-old woman who lives near the spot where the body was found has been missing since May 6. Teresa Jo Moore, also known as Terry Moore, had last been seen on U.S. 17A walking toward Moncks Corner accompanied by a man on a bicycle.
