130 tons of food to be sold at reduced cost in S.C.
Local churches will band together Saturday to distribute more than 130 tons of food to needy families across South Carolina. The effort, coordinated by Angel Food Ministries, is in response to rapidly rising food costs.
Angle Food Ministries, based in Monroe, Ga., buys in bulk at reduced prices, then passes its savings to shoppers who can purchase inexpensive, brand-name products at local distribution hubs, typically neighborhood churches. A $30 box of food costs about $65 at the grocery store, according to the organization.
Approximately 2.5 million people benefit from the Angel Food program each month. Food stamps will be accepted.
Bags of food will be sold at two distribution sites in the Lowcountry: Hillcrest Baptist Church in North Charleston and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Summerville. Other South Carolina distribution sites include Hearts of Compassion Ministries in Myrtle Beach, Christian Life Assembly in Columbia, Springdale Baptist Church in West Columbia and Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Greenville.
Angel Food Ministries calls the food distribution effort a "hand up rather than a hand out." A portion of the proceeds is returned to each host site, and the money is used for community service and outreach.
