Nearly 60 Lowcountry eco-friendly businesses will gather under one roof Friday and Saturday for South Carolina's first Green Living Festival.

Showcasing a variety of verde ventures, from Edge Solutions (environmental and geothermal drilling specialists) to Palmetto Mattress (green-certified mattresses, pillows, foundations and bases), the for-profit festival is designed to increase awareness and knowledge of area businesses that offer products or services that are good for you and good for the planet.

The event offers an opportunity to learn more about green living through speakers, demonstrations and vendor booths. So, bring your reusable shopping bag because you'll have the chance to shop for environmental, natural wellness and fair-trade products from exhibitors such as DwellSmart and Natural Soy Candles.

The Green Living Festival is practicing what it's preaching, taking steps to reduce its environmental impact. Carbon offsets have been purchased to compensate for the carbon emissions at the event's location, the Omar Shrine Convention Center at 176 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant, as well as for people traveling to the festival. Plus, the organic food vendor will use only biodegradable containers, and food waste will be given to a local farm for composting.

The festival, sponsored by local businesses Hemp Essentials (chemical-free skin care), Money with a Mission (socially responsible investing) and Natural Awakenings Lowcountry (a healthy living magazine), runs from noon to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $7 for a one-day pass or $10 for both days.
