Piccolo to open art exhibits around town

What would an arts festival be without art? Piccolo Spoleto isn't in any danger of finding out, as there are at least a dozen visual arts exhibitions and activities on the calendar this year, and you don't have to wait until the festival's opening day to start enjoying them.

The following exhibits open this week:

--Charleston Kids With Cameras displays work by participants in a photography mentoring program for youths in low-income families. First Federal, 34 Broad St., 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, Friday through June 13.

--Piccolo's 24th annual Juried Art Exhibition showcases works by South Carolina artists with the theme "Vanishing Landscapes." City Gallery at Waterfront Park, 34 Prioleau St., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday through June 7.

--Richard Hagerty Invitational Exhibition: Celebration features works by the surgeon and self-taught artist who created this year's poster. The Corrigan Gallery, 62 Queen St., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday through June 14, daily except Sunday. The opening reception will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

--Richard McMahan's Mini Museum includes the artist's personal museum collection of miniature reproductions of the world's greatest works of art. Addlestone Library, 205 Calhoun St., 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday through June 20. Opening reception 5-7 p.m. Friday.

--Robert Epps Invitational Exhibition features photographs capturing the juxtaposition of color and memory. New Perspectives Gallery, 180 Meeting St., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday through June 8.

--Sandy Logan Invitational Exhibition explores the complex and beautiful compositions created by the joining of different building materials. New Perspectives Gallery, 180 Meeting St., 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday through June 8.

--The Yo Art Project presents works by youngsters ages 6-15 from the Meeting Street Manor and Bayside Housing residence. Charleston County Library, 68 Calhoun St., 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Exhibit is on display Friday through June 16.

And that's just the ones opening this week!
