New homeless shelter proposed for North Charleston

Women and children down on their luck may one day have a new temporary home in North Charleston.

The city, along with North Charleston Housing Authority and private interests, wants to build a homeless shelter for women and children on 3.5 acres off North Rhett Avenue near the new Remount Venture defense-contracting facility.

The $3.6 million project would be comprised of three buildings: an emergency shelter, transitional housing building for stays up to six months, and a donation facility for clothes, food and furnishings, said Richard Weiser, a developer with the Weiser Companies who is helping to coordinate the project.

It is not expected to open until late 2009 or 2010.
