Tornado strikes Lowcountry

An apparent tornado touched down on Wadmalaw Island early this evening as thunderstorms raked the Lowcountry for the second time today. A few homes were damaged but no injuries had been reported as of 8:30 p.m.

The thunderstorm cells followed a morning storm that spawned tornado warnings south and west of the Charleston area and dropped an inch to nearly four inches of rain locally. Those storms lost some strength as they neared the coast. The afternoon was different.

β€œA front sweeping through and a sea breeze interacted with each other,” said meteorologist Douglas Berry with the National Weather Service, Charleston. The weather service office will inspect damage today to determine in if was a tornado or straight winds.

But β€œit had a strong signature on radar to indicate it was a tornado,” Berry said.

Monday will be totally different, Berry said, sunny and a bit cooler. But winds will be strong.
