State House hopeful wins union support

State House District 111 hopeful Clay Middleton won the backing from several labor unions Wednesday.

Ken Riley, President of ILA Local 1422, Erin McKee of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the executive committee of the AFL-CIO announced they backed Middleton, an Iraq war veteran who now works for U.S. Majority Whip James Clyburn's Lowcountry office.

Middleton said he is trying to reach all District 111 voters, "and working families are a major part of the team we are building."

He faces a June 10 Democratic primary battle against Charleston City Councilman Wendell Gilliard and S.C. State University Board of Trustees chairman Maurice Washington.

Voters will decide who will fill the seat being vacated by Rep. Floyd Breeland's retirement.
