Patrol honors Summerville state trooper
Beres wins statewide award
S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of Summerville has been named the state's 2007 Trooper of the Year.

An outstanding officer is named from each of 10 patrol troops, with one overall winner selected from among that group. The selections were announced earlier this month.
Beres, 36, has been a trooper for 13 years. He was assigned as community relations officer for Troop 6 a year ago but has been covering Troop 7 while that officer is serving in Iraq.
Troop 6 includes Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Colleton, Beaufort and Jasper counties. Troop 7 covers an area from Orangeburg to Aiken.
Beres was nominated, in part, because of his innovative approaches to educating teen drivers and others about safety issues, the patrol said. He often visits schools on his own time to eat lunch with children or read to them.
Beres has put the needs of others ahead of his own, the patrol said. He once sold his boat and donated the proceeds to a neighbor who lost everything in a house fire. He also coordinated donation efforts for the family.
Beres' early life shaped his approach to difficult situations and instilled in him a love for people, the patrol said. His parents escaped Hungary, which was overrun with poverty and hunger. Beres was born in a refugee camp in Baden, Austria. When he was 2, his family had saved enough money to immigrate to America.
Beres served in the Navy before joining the Highway Patrol.
In addition to Beres, two other local patrol employees were honored this month.
Lance Cpl. Jaime A. Cardona was selected Trooper of the Year for Troop 6 and Brittany A. Mills was selected telecommunications operator of the year from the Charleston telecommunications center.
Cardona, who is bilingual, has helped bridge communication gaps between law enforcement and the Spanish-speaking community, the patrol said. He was instrumental in solving a recent hit-and-run collision that severely injured a girl. Cardona went door-to-door in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood to speak to residents. Several tips came in the next day, resulting in the arrest of a suspect, the patrol said.
Cardona has been a trooper for five years.

What the media doesn't show as a top story on the 6 o'clock news are more stories of the heroic acts Troopers conduct on a daily basis. Troopers eat, sleep and breathe being a community servant. They do not leave their jobs at the office after signing off for the day. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, their thoughts are on community safety and protecting those who cannot protect themselves. Only select men and women can do this job. They keep drunk drivers off the road so that my child does not become a DUI victim; they keep drug dealers off the Interstates and state roads so that my child's school doesn't receive the drugs; they visit parents of children to bring them the news of a fatal accident; they present and defend cases in court rooms going up against seasoned lawyers; they see horrible accidents but still have to work:the list goes on. Yet, their pay is low but their passion is high.
Thank you Troopers for doing your thankless job; your law abiding community as a whole, supports you and appreciates you!

Keep raising the bar for your brothers, giving them a role model :) It's such a joy to read about someone who is dedicated to doing the right things such as voluntarily giving time to improve the image of their organization, particularly giving time to allow children to see the honor in your profession.
