A man walked into a bank here, poured an unknown flammable liquid onto a desk and handed a teller a note in an apparent robbery this morning, Charleston police said.
The man walked into the South Carolina Federal Credit Union at 1317 Folly Road with a bottle and emptied out the contents around 9:30 a.m., Capt. Gary Tillman said.
The man demanded money and said he would burn down the bank if he didn't get the money.
Authorities did not immediately identify the liquid and declined to discuss the specifics of the note.
The man left with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.
Three fire vehicles and about 10 police vehicles responded to the business near Fort Johnson Road. Employees were leaving through a rear entrance as fire crews used a large fan to vent the building.
Police reported arresting a suspect this morning and expected to release more information later in the day.

This guy certainly has a unique style. However, there are some really stupid "unknown factors" in this case:
Banks keep up with every single penny. How could they not know how much money was taken?
Does the bank not have windows? I mean, really - how could nobody have seen if the man left on foot or in a vehicle?
And "an unknown flammable liquid?"
Sounds like the cops are really holding out on informtation on this one.

summerville_guy:
Tellers just hand over the money they don't count how much they hand over . And there is not an automatic counter that calculates how much money has been taken out of the drawer. The tellers have to key in how many bills of each denomination they receive or hand out. I am sure the teller wasn't keying in that she handed out 300 $20 bills during the robbery.
Now once everything dies down and they are able to balance that teller's cash for that period they will be able to determine how much money this "fire" robber was given.

Also, if a place is robbed, they are not supposed to reveal the amount taken. Standard procedure. It doesn't say an unknown amount, just undisclosed.

Bank Robbed With Gasoline
Tracey Amick, Live 5 News
Minutes after the South Carolina Federal Credit Union on Folly Road opened for business on Thursday, police say 41 year old Carl Lee Mikell entered the lobby to make an illegal withdrawal.
Chief Operating Officer Troy Hall rushed to the James Island branch when he heard the news.
"The guy when he first came in announced he wanted cash and he had a flammable liquid with him he was right there by the greeting station when he made that announcement", Hall said.
Making his threat even stronger the suspect poured gasoline on the carpet and chairs and other items that were removed and put outside- and fans were placed inside the credit union to clean the air.
The suspect took off with some cash, and employees were shaken up, but no one was hurt.
But police say before Mikell left he made one huge mistake.
The note demanding cash...was written on the back of a cell phone bill...belonging to him...and police arrested Mikell less than 2 hours later.
