For this edition of Preview, we ran across hip-hop personality Chief Chinchilla, aka The Onion Ring Pimp.

Based out of Jamaica, Queens, Chief holds down a day job making rainbow sprinkles for doughnuts at a manufacturing plant, but at night he spends his time treating the ladies to food from Le Chateau Blanc (aka White Castle). He's always working on his monthly hip-hop/funk podcast, "gator$-n-furs," with his partner in crime, J-Zone. For May, the "gator$-n-furs" Podcast is entitled "Hey Ladies," and showcases some of the best females in the history of hip-hop. To listen to "gator$-n-furs," visit J-Zone's MySpace page at www.myspace.com/jzoneoldmaid. For all the ladies who want to be Chief's "friend," visit his MySpace page www.myspace.com/ladieslovechiefchinchilla.

Archers Of Loaf - "Web In Front": Not familiar with this. I could see myself getting on this rock-'n'-roll stuff. I wanna get a lotta' rock girls. I'm tired of rap girls. I wanna play rock music so I could get rock girls.

Use the keywords "Web," "Archers" and "Loaf" or go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oFSvbY6Itg to hear this mid-'90s indie rock gem.

Gap Band - "Outstanding": That's the pimp stuff my uncle would listen to before going to the race tracks. Reminds me of old family barbecues. ... it's making me hungry. I think I need to start an R&B band because R&B and rock bands get better women than rap dudes any day. You make the girls scream with stuff like this, but then it's classy and mature enough for the older women. I want older women. I don't want any women under 40 because they have issues and they're demanding. You wanna get that crowd you make this kinda' music. All you ladies out there get at me on MySpace. Also, (Gap Band lead singer) Charlie Wilson needs to cut them cornrows, though. Just get a Caesar cut, Charlie.

Check out the live version of this classic at www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFBvyOck-CY or use the keywords "gap," "Outstanding" and "Fresno."

The Intruders - "Cowboys To Girls": (Producer) Alchemist killed this. ... It's funny because I love this song, but I never would've thought to (sample) this song. You're bringing out old barbecue songs, and it's got me catching flashbacks to the '80s playing this song. I'm having flashbacks of Jheri curls at the family reunions and the aunt who had Jheri curls and having to put plastic all over the sofa to protect it from all the curl juice she had in her hair. This is classic '60s music, but it's timeless. Kool & The Gang, The Intruders, The Floaters, The Gap Band, all of them are honorary chinchillas.

Watch a rare live clip of The Intruders in their heyday at www.youtube.com/watch?v=t70lBcxYzdk or use the words "Intruders," "Cowboys" and "1968" in your quest.

Main Source - "Just Hangin' Out": That's Large Professor, aka Pauly Goggles. That's my man. He lives around my way. J-Zone talked to him yesterday. I think he was trying to get some beats to him for some project Large Professor is doing. That's one of the coolest dudes in hip-hop. He's real humble. On the new mix-show we played Gwen McCrae's "90% of Me is You," the original song that Large sampled for this. He was the first producer Zone saw work. That was back when Large was working (with) Roxanne Shante. ... They were at Power Play studio. He's got a crazy knowledge of records, plus he discovered Nas. He's a Queens legend.

Visit Youtube with the keywords "Main," "Source," and "Out" or cut-n-paste www.youtube.com/watch?v=30wSbcn3Sx4 into your browser.

George Clinton - "Atomic Dog": This is that West Coast barbecue stuff. See, I want to go back to the day when every beat has "Atomic Dog" and Zapp's "More Bounce To The Ounce" in the song. It could be mindless to me, it's just gotta be funky. I love generic early '90s G-funk production and all the Dr. Dre rip-off beats. All you need to make a really entertaining funky record is one Ohio Players record, one P-Funk record and a Moog. You cannot go wrong with early '90s generic G-funk.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuyS9M8T03A will give you a taste of the funkiest of all dogs, or you could get a little help chasing the cat with the keywords "Atomic," "Clinton" and "Dog."

Devin The Dude - "What A Job": Devin? Another classic artist ... he's another guy who could do albums similar in theme and I could never get sick of it. I think it comes down to a matter of taste. I could listen to trash talk and funk all day. Devin is like Too Short, every album you know what you're gonna' get, but it's like more adventures in the life of Devin. He's another one that doesn't get enough credit. He's a great songwriter. Real talented. When he worked with Zone he was real humble, real down-to-earth.

For a peep at one of the most clever, laid-back and underrated emcees in the biz, listen to this track at www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T1jdreS6ko or use the keywords "Devin," "Dude" and "Job."

Bryce Donovan: It Beats Working...

A couple of weekends ago, my wife and I went hiking (notice I took my wife with me) (and we actually went hiking) in the mountains of North Carolina. It was during that time, surrounded by vast amounts of open space and the gentle sounds of nature, that I had a chance to reflect on some things, most notably, how much I missed cable television.
