Summerville-area House seat pits Horne against Hutson

The GOP primary for Dorchester's House District 94 pits familiar political opponents Jenny Horne and Rep. Heyward Hutson against one another for a rematch.

Hutson won the Summerville-area seat by a less than 300-vote margin in October in a special election, and the two competitors will square off again on June 10.

"My philosophy is, South Carolina can be the first in education, the first in per capita income," said Horne, a 35-year-old lawyer. "We can be the first in job creation and job growth, we just have to work together to do it."

Hutson, 72, retired Army officer, said he is the right choice.

"I invite everyone to look at my record and they will see that I have done everything possible to accomplish what I have set out to do," he said.

Horne has raised $25,846.92 for the election, according to quarterly records. Hutson raised $2,501.93. He noted that he does not employ campaign consultants, on which Horne has spent at least $8,000.

Horne said improving the way public education is delivered is a priority. She wants education to be more relevant for students in a global economy. One way to do that is make education more technology-driven and offer more vocational opportunities, which also would help the drop-out rate, she said.

A stronger education system will achieve the goal of a thriving state economy, Horne said. She also said she also would like the Legislature to create incentives for regional planning efforts.

Hutson wants to focus attention on commuting, including a pilot program for a Park & Ride for Dorchester commuters and working on safety conditions with car-pooling lanes and a rail system to take container trucks off busy Charleston-area roads to a centralized terminal.

He wants impact fees to alleviate school construction costs and reduce state income taxes with flat-tax proposals.

A third area of attention is on energy-saving measures such as tax incentives and grants for industries, he said.

No Democrats filed for the seat.

Why are you running for office?: I think South Carolinians are tired of politics as usual. We need new leaders with fresh ideas to lead the state through the problems we currently face.

Previous elected office: State House 1993-1996; Dorchester County Council, 1988-1992.

Why are you running for office?: People have told me that they thought I was the right person for the job and I am committed to doing good things for the people of South Carolina.

What's the toughest issue facing the district and state?: At the moment, the growth issue is locally the most challenging issue. For the state, and the country, I think, it's the economy and the dependence on foreign oil; thus, I think we have to develop energy-saving measures and become more conservation-minded.

Nothing against her but we don't need anymore realestate people serving there own interest in Dorchester county. Growth is out of control. You can look at the money spent and see who is really into the race for the people and who is in it for themselves.

I do not know about Horne, but Hutson is for sure a good old boy. That translates into more of the same to me. Also, around there, (and I do not know about Hutson) most of the good old boys were once democrats and only changed in the 70's. That translates to opportunism to me. You can see for yourself what has happened to Summerville since the 70's.

JohnS - the fact that her husband is a realtor and she does closings for him does not mean that she (or all realtors for that matter) have any control over developments and growth. If anything, I would think the opposite right now. Hang, any realtor is having a hard time to sell any house. So, therefore, I think your line of thinking needs to exempt the realestate agencies. That comment is more appropriate for contractors. And, let's face it, every politician is in it a little for themselves. But, that doesn't mean they still don't want what they feel is the best for their community. They still have to live there, too.

She is a real estate attorney tied to LC Knight, Lafond, Randy, I only had two glasses of wine, Scott, and all the other good ole boys in the county. Younger person same old politics as usual. Why are all of her signs right next too Knight's and Scott's? If this is wrong, why do they hold fundraisers together.

A fresh face, new leader, same old good ole boy politics.

This is the same group that wants a real estate agent to be the county auditor. Sounds like a conflict of interst to me.

Christian Exodus hopes to throw off what it considers unconstitutional burdens imposed by the federal government. Examples, Burnell said, are federal spending on public education and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the use of the courts "to teach that Heather has two mommies.''

"We (want to) force Washington, D.C., to reform itself by not going along with it,'' he said.

The organization's Web site says if it does not meet its goal of change, it will work to secede from the United States.

South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union in 1860, and the first shots of the U.S. Civil War were fired from Charleston's Battery onto Fort Sumter.

The group's reception in South Carolina has been mixed.

Arthur Bryngelson, chairman of the Dorchester County Republican Party, spoke at a Christian Exodus' conference and said he would encourage Christian Exodus members to become Republicans.

"I consider myself to be a fundamental Christian,'' he said. ''I'm with (Christian Exodus) all the way up to secession. ... I'm not in favor of going down to the Battery and firing on Fort Sumter again.''

State Sen. Mike Fair, a Republican who described himself as ''a narrow-minded, right-wing, fundamentalist fanatic,'' said he was suspicious of Christian Exodus.

"I had huge credibility problems with them,'' he said. ''Their plank for this perceived buckle of the Bible Belt, they're so far off the mark. I don't think they're going to get much traction

I've been meaning to alert y'all about Sheriff Nash's re-election campaign. He's embattled in a primary fight in Dorchester County. He is quite frankly the BEST friend of the US and South Carolina constitutions of all the sheriffs in the state - he's likely the best sheriff in the nation in this regard.

His friendship with CE over the past couple years makes it hard for us to publicly promote him because the media will be quick to write controversial nonsense should any connection with CE be thought to exist. So I'm asking you to do whatever you can in a personal capacity to help his campaign. Please spread the word about his campaign far and wide. Another thought is to give to his campaign financially if you're too far from Dorchester County to volunteer. Keep in mind that the media will likely latch onto out of state contributions in a negative way. To avoid this possibility, keep your total contribution to LESS than $100 per person and it will not have to be reported. For those of you in South Carolina, there is no such concern of course. Should you be out of state and desire to give more, consider having friends or family members write a check to the Nash campaign.

Checks can be made to Nash for Sheriff and mailed to PO Box 52384, Summerville, SC 29485.

Lastly, the email below is his campaign newsletter. You can sign up to receive it and stay abreast of the campaign at his campaign website: http://www.nashforsheriff.com/.

Yours in the Cause,
Cory

Boatwright was host at Folly Beach City Hall to a group of Romanian police chiefs Nash invited to Charleston in November for activities that included a Police Dynamics seminar. Boatwright said he sat through one of the seminars about 10 years ago. Other than that, he said he's not all that familiar with Nash's classes and has no plans to continue them if elected.

"I'm a strong proponent of good character," Boatwright said. "I certainly believe in integrity, but I don't know that I'll (promote it in that format)."

Knight didn't return a phone call Wednesday but said Tuesday he considers himself just as ethical as his opponent.

Boatwright is a member of Cathedral of Praise, an interdenominational church where Nash's chief of staff, John Barnes, also is a member. Knight is a member of Knightsville United Methodist Church.

The religious affiliation could matter to some voters in Dorchester County, county Republican Party Chairman Arthur Bryngelson said.

"Certainly, L.C. (Knight) is a man of integrity, too," Bryngelson said. "But he might not be as much of a Bible thumper as Nash and Boatwright."

Bryngelson, a conservative evangelical himself, said he won't endorse a candidate until filing closes at the end of March but hopes the election centers around law-enforcement issues.

Boatwright agreed.

"I'm not running the campaign so much as a Christian," Boatwright said. "I'm running the campaign because I think I'm the best professional choice for the office of sheriff."

Boatwright, who lives in St. George, was a North Charleston police patrol supervisor, Air Force Special Investigations officer and Charleston County sheriff's operations major before going to Folly Beach last year.

Knight boasts 29 years of SLED experience, including several years as a supervisor.

ChrisPia - You said, "Notafan....So tell us What your opinion is of the other person running for County Auditor.I really have to hear this one.She did 12 years of audits on Ray Nash and The DCSO?"

The auditor's office doesn't do audits on any departments of the county, their responsibility is to help the county council set an appropriate millage rate on the property tax bills in order to meet budget requirements and they are also responsible for calculating and creating the tax bills for all of the property tax bills that the county issues.

The county council retains the services of an outside auccounting firm to do a financial audit each year. How far they dig into each department depends on the scope of the audit determined by the county. Many counties also have an internal audit dept., but I'm not sure if Dorchester does (which is different from the Auditor's office...an internal audit dept. would look at each department to determine if they are doing things right).

I believe the other person running for auditor was suspended for giving discounts to friends so obviously I don't think she is a good candidate but can't the people of Dorchester County find someone more qualified. I far as I can tell JJ Messervey's only accomplishments is having the last Messervey. Someone please enlighten me if I am wrong.

Nice to see Chris Pia is still on his witchhunt. For all who have seen his mindless ramblings please note that this man has a personal agenda agains Nash and anyone who is associated with him. And why? Because while Chris Pia was employed at the jail he withheld some information concerning some inmates so he was fired. Now since he has no job and nothing better to do he has taken it upon himself to bash Nash and any other person remotely associated with him. Talk about a grudge. He is under the false impression that if his boy LC Knight is elected Sheriff he will somehow get his job back. LC Knight has no option but to get elected so he can pay off all these favors. AHHH the good ole boy system alive and well.

notafan (anonymous) says...

Chris Pia you may not have heard but Nash is not running for reelection. You don't like Boatwright because he knows Nash and they may run in similar circles but does that mean Nash and Boatwright are one in the same??

Why don't you post items that compare Boatwright and Knight and not all this Nash bashing. The man is going to be gone at the end of the year. Do you think your mindless posts about his religion are going to sway voters to Knight? And what are LC's qualifications for Sheriff other than being promoted on the efforts of his father? Matter of fact what has LC been doing for the past three years? Has he been in law enforcement or just retired? Also, why has he not addressed Scott's comments about "we won't have this going on when LC is elected". Now I am a simple person but does that comment mean no more DUI's in Dorchester County or just no DUI's for politicians? Funny if this situation was reversed Chris Pia would be on this site wanting Nash to address Scott's comments. Oh I forgot we are talking about Knight so the rules don't apply.

Chris Pia one question are you okay with a good ol boy political system whereby ones accomplishments are not based on their merits but rather on who you or more importantly who your daddy knows. Please try to answer this one. I know it may be hard for you.
